Is Tesco withdrawing 3V cards?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

I have written a few posts recently about how to earn free Avios (360 per £50 purchase) by buying 3V Virtual Visa cards at Tesco (see here and here for example).  This has, unfortunately, led to a nationwide shortage of them.

It now seems that Tesco may be withdrawing the cards when current stocks run down.  Reader Steve made a formal enquiry to Tesco and got this back in reply:

Dear Mr XXXXXX

Thank you for your email.  My name is XXXXXX and I am a Customer Service Manager who is responsible for resolving your email.

I’m sorry to learn the details of your concerns since trying to purchase 3V Visa Prepaid cards from your local Tesco stores.  I appreciate you contacting me, as these have not been found during your recent visits.

Please be assured that it is never our intention to frustrate or disappoint any customer at any time.

To investigate, I have this afternoon spoken with my colleague XXXXXX, from our Business Support Team.  I have been informed that we no longer sell the V3 version of these cards, but we still sell the standard Visa Giftcard, which can be bought in either a  £25.00 or £50.00 value.  These will be available in most major stores which sell giftcards.

Finally, I’d like to thank you for your time and I do hope you are able to purchase these on your next usual visit.  If there is anything else I can do to help, please do contact this office again.

I am actually quite impressed that Tesco is responding to enquiries in such a detailed manner.

And yesterday, just as I preparing this post, reader Mark posted this in the Comments section of Head for Points:

GAME OVER!  Just had a call from Tesco after I sent an email asking when my local store would stock 3V cards. They inform me stocks won’t be replenished anywhere as their agreement with 3V, which was for limited stocks, is now at an end. It seems to me the bonus clubcard points attracted the wrong type of customer for 3V.

Nothing in either of these messages surprises me.  After all, Tesco is making a big splash of the Visa gift cards which carry a £3.95 fee.  It is just plain weird to cannibalise sales of these by selling the 3V cards alongside them, which carry no fee.

There are certainly thousands of 3V cards still in the system, since your reports show that stores which carry them are still being restocked.  I wouldn’t count on this as a long-term way of generating free Avios points, though.

I did wonder how long it was going to be before this ended one way or another. Glad I made hay!!

  • squillion says:

All good things come to an end 😉

Been out at Squill Towers the last week or so but when I get back just got the small matter of the TV licence to pre-pay and another G on the council tax (which they already told me can be credited to my current a/c later) and I think that’s over & out from me.

  • Phillip says:

It makes sense – for a long time these cards were not included in the 150 bonus points promotion, and suddenly they were added. I would say this was Tesco’s way of getting rid of stocks and it has worked a treat for them. Frustrating as it might be that the deal is in some ways coming to an end, I think most of us can admit, it has been a win-win situation. Just a shame it cannot continue!

    • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

They were always in the 150 promotion! It just wasn’t as well known.

  • James Ward says:

I can confirm that stores are still being replenished – for now. My local Tesco Extra had none for at least two weeks after I cleared the rack. However, when I called in yesterday I found 20, which seems to be their full stock. Needless to say, I snapped them up! Will miss them when they’re gone. I love the fact that each 20 card haul = 4,600 Avios (when you add in the 2xMR points) = one BA flight.

  • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

I posted a while back that this sort of attention would wreck the product’s economics. Fun while it lasted though.

  • Rocky says:

Just need to make the most of what is left in stores. My area always seems to have them.

  • Mitpat474 says:

You can still buy them from other stores? Ok the bonus of 150 cc points is gone, but if you need to meet spends on CC cards this is still very much alive……..

    • Rob says:

Agreed. If I see some in passing in another store I will get them to settle my tax bill, although I won’t go out of my way to find them.

  • Manuel Gonzalez says:

    Hello,

What is the difference between this 3V and the 50£ Visa giftcard?

    • Manuel Gonzalez says:

As the other ones are in stores.

    • Brendan says:

Is there still 150 CC bonus with the £50 + 3.95 cards? I have weekly £7 of £70 shop coupons to use so that would more or less cancel out the fee

      • Alan says:

Yep, you still get the bonus CC points and if you have a conditional spend voucher then you can use that too (eg £5 off for £50 spend wipes our the fee – although it’s even nicer with 3V cards where it means £50 only costs £45 :D)

      • Rob says:

Yes. I have bought them using similar vouchers.

However, throw in at least 1 other item. I had a fight yesterday trying to buy gift cards with a coupon and no other purchase (first time I tried with no other items) and the cashier point blank refused the coupon even though it scanned OK (she deleted it) due to the rules on the back.
