Is Tesco withdrawing 3V cards?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

I have written a few posts recently about how to earn free Avios (360 per £50 purchase) by buying 3V Virtual Visa cards at Tesco (see here and here for example).  This has, unfortunately, led to a nationwide shortage of them.

It now seems that Tesco may be withdrawing the cards when current stocks run down.  Reader Steve made a formal enquiry to Tesco and got this back in reply:

Dear Mr XXXXXX

Thank you for your email.  My name is XXXXXX and I am a Customer Service Manager who is responsible for resolving your email.

I’m sorry to learn the details of your concerns since trying to purchase 3V Visa Prepaid cards from your local Tesco stores.  I appreciate you contacting me, as these have not been found during your recent visits.

Please be assured that it is never our intention to frustrate or disappoint any customer at any time.

To investigate, I have this afternoon spoken with my colleague XXXXXX, from our Business Support Team.  I have been informed that we no longer sell the V3 version of these cards, but we still sell the standard Visa Giftcard, which can be bought in either a  £25.00 or £50.00 value.  These will be available in most major stores which sell giftcards.

Finally, I’d like to thank you for your time and I do hope you are able to purchase these on your next usual visit.  If there is anything else I can do to help, please do contact this office again.

I am actually quite impressed that Tesco is responding to enquiries in such a detailed manner.

And yesterday, just as I preparing this post, reader Mark posted this in the Comments section of Head for Points:

GAME OVER!  Just had a call from Tesco after I sent an email asking when my local store would stock 3V cards. They inform me stocks won’t be replenished anywhere as their agreement with 3V, which was for limited stocks, is now at an end. It seems to me the bonus clubcard points attracted the wrong type of customer for 3V.

Nothing in either of these messages surprises me.  After all, Tesco is making a big splash of the Visa gift cards which carry a £3.95 fee.  It is just plain weird to cannibalise sales of these by selling the 3V cards alongside them, which carry no fee.

There are certainly thousands of 3V cards still in the system, since your reports show that stores which carry them are still being restocked.  I wouldn’t count on this as a long-term way of generating free Avios points, though.

As others have said – what a great example this thread is of (1) people being sensible and not pushing things too far, (2) being fair to others. Great work.

In a way I think its a ‘good thing’ if people abuse offers like these because its a self correcting mechanism. Taking our points tarting out of the equation (a selfish endevour regardless of how extreme people want to go with it) you are left with a situation where Tesco are selling a card which when used ‘fee free’ cannot make anyone any money (so its a stupid idea from a business sense) and when used with the fee is probably targeting people with poor credit and applying punitive fees for allowing them to use the card in any sort of sensible way. I dislike products like this intensely.

I also really dislike the offer culture that big brands use in the UK, for example – ‘buy this and get free points’ is really intended to get you to establish a trend in your buying habbits so that the offer can be withdrawn and you will carry on shopping at a certain retailer even though its not the best offer any longer. As always buyer beware but its really a mass waste of time to need to keep comparing prices and offers which are not like for like. It is a way of influenceing crowd behaviour though your powerful position in the marketplace and I’m not 100% comfortable with that. The more these offers get exploited by people like us then hopefully the fewer poor products and offers will emerge!

Cambridge fulborne had at least 20 3v vouchers today at 11am. Yesterday tesco bar hill had lots as well . Hope this helps someone.

Would have liked to have taken advantage of this offer, but I can’t find any of these in the Hants/Surrey/Berks borders, in any type of Tesco. Rather a waste of time even looking 🙁

  • JimmyG says:

I thought stores like Argos, Boots and WHSmiths sold the 3V cards, so could possibly buy Argos cards from Tesco’s and then buy 3V cards from the above.

    • dan says:

Please let this not be the case… I need a reason to stop, having put circa £8k thro these in the last 2-3 weeks! Please let this not be a further loophole..it will force me to go rubbing off those bloody silver validation codes and keep going… nooooooooooooo!

      • James Ward says:

Ha ha! Know what you mean. My heart did sink and leap simultaneously when I found my local Tesco restocked last week!
