Is Tesco withdrawing 3V cards?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

I have written a few posts recently about how to earn free Avios (360 per £50 purchase) by buying 3V Virtual Visa cards at Tesco (see here and here for example).  This has, unfortunately, led to a nationwide shortage of them.

It now seems that Tesco may be withdrawing the cards when current stocks run down.  Reader Steve made a formal enquiry to Tesco and got this back in reply:

Dear Mr XXXXXX

Thank you for your email.  My name is XXXXXX and I am a Customer Service Manager who is responsible for resolving your email.

I’m sorry to learn the details of your concerns since trying to purchase 3V Visa Prepaid cards from your local Tesco stores.  I appreciate you contacting me, as these have not been found during your recent visits.

Please be assured that it is never our intention to frustrate or disappoint any customer at any time.

To investigate, I have this afternoon spoken with my colleague XXXXXX, from our Business Support Team.  I have been informed that we no longer sell the V3 version of these cards, but we still sell the standard Visa Giftcard, which can be bought in either a  £25.00 or £50.00 value.  These will be available in most major stores which sell giftcards.

Finally, I’d like to thank you for your time and I do hope you are able to purchase these on your next usual visit.  If there is anything else I can do to help, please do contact this office again.

I am actually quite impressed that Tesco is responding to enquiries in such a detailed manner.

And yesterday, just as I preparing this post, reader Mark posted this in the Comments section of Head for Points:

GAME OVER!  Just had a call from Tesco after I sent an email asking when my local store would stock 3V cards. They inform me stocks won’t be replenished anywhere as their agreement with 3V, which was for limited stocks, is now at an end. It seems to me the bonus clubcard points attracted the wrong type of customer for 3V.

Nothing in either of these messages surprises me.  After all, Tesco is making a big splash of the Visa gift cards which carry a £3.95 fee.  It is just plain weird to cannibalise sales of these by selling the 3V cards alongside them, which carry no fee.

There are certainly thousands of 3V cards still in the system, since your reports show that stores which carry them are still being restocked.  I wouldn’t count on this as a long-term way of generating free Avios points, though.

I think the dream is definitely over. My local Tesco had a full supply on Monday night. When I checked tonight, the rack from which they’d previously hung was empty. Although it’s possible there’s another HfP reader who went mad for the 3V cards in Bethnal Green, I am assuming the store has removed them from sale.

    • What's the Point says:

I bought 10 today at the Doncaster Extra store. I reckon there were about 5 left on the hook.
I won’t be going back, so good luck to anyone that can be bothered to go!

    • louie-m says:

I’d be very surprised if they removed them from sale. I reckon someone else got there first. However…. I made hubby stop off at the Lakeside Tesco yesterday lunchtime as he was passing and there were none, despite the lady apparently having filled up the racks that morning. So it looks as they were not restocked despite there being none on the shelves before restocking, which suggests to me that they are simply not putting any more on sale.

  • Mr Bridge says:

any one thought that maybe tesco reads HFP, and puts up post to create ‘excietment’

    • Fidelityutensils says:

I do no think for a minute that massive companies like BA an Tescos don’t have a very close eye on the blogosphere (particularly high profile elements of it like HFP) And following on from this surely would look to use it to their advantage! How naive are we to think otherwise!?

  • RB says:

Did anyone else have a chuckle after hearing the news from Visa that spending was “1.3% higher in May than in the same month in 2012…its fastest rate since September 2012”!!

    • Ed E says:

I was gutted that all of us HFPers and the like were unable to halt the 1% drop in like for like sales at Tesco that was announced yesterday. If there had been more cards on shelves there would have been well up on sales!!

      • What's the Point says:

I am just about to activate my last £25 card, I feel like a drug addict that has sold his last possession and knows there is no more candy forthcoming!

        • Ed E says:

14 cards from Tesco in Swansea on Saturday morning! Visiting my Uncle and Aunt on Gower has never been so rewarding!

          • Ed E says:

Put them through in 4 batches (there was a bit of a queue so didn’t want to pi$$ off the whole of Swansea) and have now also got 4 x £5 off £40 spend vouchers to use today on the £50 normal visa ones. This is such fun!

  • takke says:

Just thought I’d report on my experience at Tesco Hall Green…

I saw 18 3V cards on the shelf – in itself surprising – and thought that I would buy 14.
I went to a till, and the person serving asked the server at the next till ‘Is there an age restriction on these, as they’re Visa cards?’ (I’ve never had this before, even on the physical Visa which I can understand a little more given that it’s processed as a credit card, which could be used as an age verification for example for mobile phone providers maybe?)
His server did not know, so he called over his supervisor, who said ‘no, there’s no age restriction, but you can’t buy that many in one transaction.’ I asked ‘How many can you buy?’ and she said ‘About 5, but I’ll need to go and check.’
Meanwhile my server asked me why I was buying them, and I explained the points promotion, and he said ‘I think I’ll buy a couple myself!’ The till supervisor shortly returned with someone who appeared to be a store manager. He asked me what I wanted the cards for, and I said for shopping online, as it says on the front of the cards. He said ‘I’m sorry, I can’t let you do that.’ I also explained the points promotion, to which he said ‘That promotion can only be used once per customer.’ I asked how many I could buy, and he said ‘you can buy one.’ I said no thank you, thanked the server for his time, and left.

So it seems now they are placing restrictions on existing stock as well – or maybe this was simply a one off.

    • James Ward says:

You should ask him to call head office. I got a similar response from Leeds store and when pressed the duty manager called up and was told that there’s no restriction.

    • Rich says:

That’s obviously them making up a number- I would have asked why they have a promotion that requires you to spend £50 on giftcards if they only let you buy £25 in one transaction.

I am still finding them out and about- been on holiday so have stopped at any Tescos I have passed whilst driving across Hampshire and found 10 remaining in Winchester which I bought (in one transaction) and also a further 3 in Andover.

I genuinely don’t think the store staff know much about these based on some of the conversations I have had, and the only reason the management are wary about large volumes is because of credit card fraud- a pal of mine is a manager in a Tesco and I spoke to him about this to see if he could order in £5k for me- he spoke to his store manager and said that even though they know me there is too much nervousness about it for them to risk it.

  • Danksy says:

I haven’t done this yet, but my local tesco extra had 20x£25 gift cards when I checked last night…going to head back with my advantage card as this will count towards my spend to get 35k a aadvantage points yay!!

  • Manufactured Spend UK - Page 13 - FlyerTalk Forums says:

    […] Seems that way – https://headforpoints.com/2013/05…wing-3v-cards/ […]

  • steve says:

I’ve managed to always buy at least 6 in one go, At one point I managed to get 16.
The only question I get asked is if I want them all.

  • Mr Bridge says:

3v restocked at mt tesco, and yes i hid them again>>>phl;pps: to those who disagree, but look behind the other cards, there is a bonus for hfp readers, jsut reggular tesco shoppers wont find them……….bye the way bought £22 shopping, £50 in 3v used a £7 off £70 spend coupon plus £5 of £40 in same trani.

    love you all
