Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The ‘secret’ avios.com sale is launched – up to 37% off redemptions

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Avios (ie avios.com, not British Airways Executive Club) has launched a private sale on various route, with up to 37% off redemptions.  A small number of members have been emailed about it so far.

This website explains it all.

In summary:

Valid ONLY on Economy redemptions

Full taxes and surcharges still payable

Must book by 28th June

Must fly by 18th December

Must book by phone on 0844 49 333 99

Implication that availability is more limited than standard award availability

The following routes are discounted by 37.5%, from 40,000 to 25,000 Avios return:

Abu Dhabi, Accra, Almaty, Amritsar, Bahrain, Baltimore, Bermuda, Boston, Chicago, Doha, Dubai, Freetown, Lagos, Monrovia, Montreal, Muscat, New York, Philadelphia, Riyadh, Toronto, Washington DC

The following routes are discounted by 20%, from 50,000 to 40,000 Avios return:

Antigua, Atlanta, Bangalore, Beijing, Bridgetown, Calgary, Cancun, Cape Town, Colombo, Dallas, Denver, Entebbe, Grand Cayman, Grenada, Houston, Hyderabad, Johannesburg, Kingston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Luanda, Male, Mexico City, Miami, Mumbai, Nairobi, Nassau, New Delhi, Phoenix, Port of Spain, Providenciales, Punta Cana, San Diego, San Francisco, San Juan, Seattle, St Kitts, St Lucia, Tampa, Tobago, Vancouver

Now, this is the key bit.

The Avios call centre says that ALL avios.com members are included in this sale.  However, to avoid a meltdown on the telephones, they are staggering the release of the emails over a number of weeks.

Whether or not you have received the email, you should be able to book by calling the number above.

Now, of course, these are only Economy redemptions.  And it is highly possible that, even at the discounted rate, they do not always represent great value for money compared to the cost of a cash ticket

Do your research before booking.  However, if you were looking to book something for the rest of 2013 then this may be your chance.

  • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

JNB could be the sweet spot here – economy tickets are often around the £800 mark with BA. That said, you can pay closer to £500 with EK if you don’t mind a layover, so depends how much you value the nonstop.

  • Robert Walkden says:

    Hi,

I have a voucher but my brother doesn’t. You have to have the voucher registered to your account otherwise you can’t have the discount.
    Tried it yesterday.

  • sarah says:

Having literally just booked a flight to Cancun for 50k miles ebfore seeing the post I was rather distressed. However, I noticed that these flights cannot be upgraded after using Avios points (which is what I’m hoping to do) so a little watch out for others

    • John says:

I might be missing something, but since when can you upgrade a flight paid with avios with more avios?

      • Rob says:

You can’t, you need to cancel and rebook in the higher class

  • Boon Koh says:

Hmm, I don’t have enough miles in my Avios.com account. Could I transfer from my BA account to Avios.com?

And are these special prices valid for one way?

    • Alan says:

Yes there’s no issue at all moving Avios between BAEC and Avios.com – just use the combine function under account management on either website to do so 🙂

    • Rob says:

Yes, easy, use Combine My Avios on ba.com (log-in, under Manage My Account)

  • Nav Atwal says:

Can you use this offer with a Lloyds TSB 2-4-1 Voucher?

  • Alan says:

Hmm well the Avios.com website has been down for me since yesterday so perhaps their concerns re. overloading their website were well-founded! Hopefully someone has popped out to buy some more hamsters to power the cogs of the machine…

  • Daniel says:

Its not fair! I called them and they said I need a voucher, how do I get hold of a voucher or voucher code?
