Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Happy birthday to us – Head for Points is 1 today

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

It was exactly a year ago that I launched Head for Points.   I had actually started writing it at the end of May, but no-one actually knew it existed at that point!  I wanted to run it for a few weeks in private to be sure that I could actually find enough to write about and enough time to write it.

It was July 2nd last year that I put a post on FlyerTalk announcing that it had launched.  Ironically, because there was five weeks of content for people to read on the first day, I got a huge number of page views on Day 1 – it then took me six months before I hit that level again!

HFP

The original version of the site looked like this, for readers who have joined since our relaunch in February 2013 and who never saw the old ‘yellow and black’ ad-free version.

There are probably about 50 people who are responsible for how Head for Points looks today.  You may even be one of them, without knowing it.

One person recommended the designer for the logo, another the hosting company.  Someone else pointed me towards the layout, someone else helped me tweak the coding.  Someone else helped with a key HTML problem, someone else helped me with a bit of Photoshop work.  Numerous people helped me find suitable affiliate partners, someone helped me find an iPad photo-editing app etc etc.  I am extremely grateful to everyone who has helped with advice and ideas over the last 12 months, especially as my IT skills are very minimal indeed!

A lot of the most interesting posts were also triggered by reader emails, which I always enjoy receiving.  It was a reader email that persuaded me to look into the 3V cards seriously, for example.  If you have an idea for a future article, or if you receive news of an interesting promotion by email which you think is worth sharing, please do forward it on to rob at headforpoints.com.  This is genuinely a collaborative venture, since with the best will in the world I can’t keep up with every loyalty scheme.

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading the site and will continue to do so.  Thank you for your support so far.

Happy first birthday! .Like others HFP is the first thing I read every morning(while still in bed!).
Next on the list this morning is looking for avios reward flights to Zurich .

    Yes indeed, thanks Raffles.

Since starting to read blog back in January I have used the advice to get one upgrade on Emirates (SPG bonus points conversion), free room upgrade whilst on holiday (through a link that gave free Accor Platinum status), had the use of 2 free lounge passes (Amex Gold), recovered my old BMI points and converted to Avios and then used for a free hotel stay (perhaps not the best use, but I now know) and collected MR points and a ridiculous amount of tesco clubcard points. Forecasting ahead I think I am now in a situation where I will be able to use my points to upgrade an annual emirates trip and have enough avios collected (by various means) to book BA First to the US or CW to Asia (if availability) and use a free companion ticket. All against the backdrop of work colleagues thinking ‘what a waste of time’!

Happy Birthday Raffles and Well Done on a SUPERB blog.

It’s the first site I read every morning! It all started when you directed me to watch the 20 min Frequent Flyer video. Every few months I watch it to remind myself why I do this 🙂 🙂

In one year I’ve managed the following and it’s all down your blog (especially the 7-8 Avios University posts)

    Numerous Reward Flight Saver redemptions
Dublin to Boston Loophole with Aer Lingus (50K + £70 return biz class)
Upcoming trip to Abu Dhabi with BA CE to Berlin and Biz Class Berlin to Abu Dhabi on Air Berlin
£2k spend off my first 2-4-1 (3v has a lot to do with this :))

……..I can see a HFP dooooooooo coming soon!

Your great work is very much appreciated!

what amazes me my dear Raffles, is not that you have enough to write about, but that you have both the time and passion, and a genuine selflessness to want to share your knowledge with others.
      Respectfully yours
      MR BRIDGE

  • A grateful reader says:

    Happy Birthday.

    I echo the other comments.

Yours is the only blog I read every day without fail and I thank you for spending your time to educate others.

I hope Mrs Raffles expresses her gratitude for the upgrades and free flights by providing you with the requisite bithday cake and champagne 🙂
