Amex Platinum cardholders – are you getting mysterious double and triple points?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

When three people email me about something, then something is definitely ‘up’!  For the last few weeks, some American Express Platinum card holders have been mysteriously receiving bonus Membership Rewards points on transactions.

Travel (of any sort) is going through at 2 points per £1

Bars and dining is going through at 3 points per £1

Annoying, I haven’t used my Platinum card for a while so I haven’t seen this in action myself.  However, it wouldn’t be the first time that Amex has given bonus points for ‘secret’ promotions!

Has anyone had an Amex Plat email announcing any promotion on travel or dining?!

If not, is it possible that Amex is actually changing the earning rules on the Platinum card?  It would make sense, since at the moment the Gold card gives 2x points on travel, supermarkets, petrol and foreign spend, whilst Platinum only gives the usual 1 point.  (See here for full details of the card.)

Giving 2 points per £1 on travel would also help placate Platinum card holders – many are annoyed about having to pay for airlines and hotels with an Amex card in order to qualify for the full Platinum travel insurance package.

Or, of course, is it all a big mistake by Amex?

If you’ve got any experience of these new bonuses, or you’ve spotted any other categories of transaction which are giving bonus points, please post below.

The poor plat earning rate is why I only use the card when I absolutely have to, it makes nor sense that the gold card is a better MR earning card. Even if they increased it to 1.5 MR per £1 I’d switch a large chunk of my spend from the BAPP.

    • Alan says:

Agreed – I still find it bonkers that the earning rate on the cheaper card is higher than on the premium one! They really need to sort this out.

  • Mike says:

I also noticed some oddness on my Gold card this month:

    Spend: £1,636
    Base points: 2,759
    Outbound spend bonus: 103
    Travel Bonus: 2,038
    First year welcome bonus: 312
    American Express Travel Bonus: 1,928
    Amex Travel 2500 bonus: 2,500
    Total: 9,640

Approaching 6 pts per £ spent, pretty damn good (£900 of that was through Amex travel).

  • Susan says:

No unexpected bonus points for me but the BMI AMEX is getting most of my spend these days unless I need to use Plat for the insurance.

  • CT says:

Prompted by this thread I went and checked and I can see lots of double or triple points especially on fuel . This one stood out at 4x
    Base Bonus Total
    16/07/2013 LIVERMEAD CLIFF HOTEL TORQUAY £112.50 224 224 448

  • WB says:

I just checked my statements and I haven’t gotten any bonus points at all !

I did however email Amex feedback earlier asking why the Gold card gets 2 points per pound whereas the platinum only gets 1.

The whole idea of the Platinum card is you get all of the benefits of the Green/Gold and more on top!!

  • What's the Point says:

Just checked my last hotel stay on my Gold Card (Marriott in UK) which was £136. Total points posted 606. There was a “travel bonus” of 272 and a “Marriott Membership Rewards” bonus of 62; which must be linked to the mailshot I received a few weeks back from AMEX telling me about triple points if I use my Gold Card at any Marriott hotel over the coming months.
    So its a x 4 multplier + the “Marriott bonus” of 62
Are AMEX missing massive trick here by not telling its card holders what the promotion actual is?

  • Luke says:

Been getting triple points on restaurants on Plat.

  • Jonny says:

Points for my Gold card are all over the place, ranging from 1x to 4x

Most amusingly (and annoyingly!) on my Oyster auto top-up, i get triple points when its on the tube but only single pts on a bus…
