Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Get 1,200 Avios or 1,250 Flying Club miles for £5 at Tesco when you pre-order ‘Skylanders’

Here we go again!  Some elements of this post may feel familiar.

On Tesco Direct, there is an offer for 500 bonus Clubcard points when you pre-order the video game ‘Skylanders Swap Force’ for £55-£60 on Xbox 360, Wii, Wii U, 3DS or PS3.

Back in your local Tesco store, however, the game is also available to pre-order for £5.

Tesco is currently offering 500 bonus Tesco Clubcard points when you pre-order ‘Skylanders Swap Force’ for £5! This is 1,200 Avios points or 1,250 Flying Club miles for just a fiver.

(This offer is clearly only half as good as the ‘Call of Duty: Ghosts’ offer recently.  However, you need to look at it in context – it is still a very cheap way to pick up some miles.)

How it is meant to work is that you get a display box scanned at the check-out, pay £5, and receive a special receipt. Visit the store on the day the game is released (18th October) and you are guaranteed to get a copy and a free poster and you will get your £5 back as a discount. The 500 bonus Clubcard points are credited with the pre-order payment.

As usual, there is no obligation to ever buy the game when it is eventually released. This means that you can treat this as a chance to buy some Avios points for 0.4p each.

You need to be very careful not to overdo this promotion. Tesco has removed bonus points in the past.  Someone also posted on Head for Points yesterday about having ‘Call of Duty’ points removed.

Do not buy more than one copy of each format per Clubcard account if you want to be 100% certain of not having your points taken away.  There are five different versions of the game, so that is still 2,500 Clubcard points to aim for.

The boxes tend to be on a separate stand to the usual video games. You take an empty box to the checkout, it is scanned, but you do not keep the box – it goes back on the shelf. You will only tend to find these in larger Tesco stores.

There are reports of two different closing dates, with 28th August (tomorrow!) and 8th September both being spotted on in-store shelf labels.  Let’s see.  I would be surprised if it was closed tomorrow after just a couple of days.

  • Marc says:

Such a frustrating site far to obviously posted… Keep the deals a little less blatant

    • Rob says:

Sorry Marc, I’m confused. This deal is available in unlimited quantities, so stock won’t be running out. It is not a ‘glitch’ or mistake, it is a public offer. (‘Call of Duty’ last week had TV AND NEWSPAPER ADVERTISING for the 1,000 points offer!). As a ‘safe sex’ site, Head for Points comes with numerous health warnings to ensure that your account is not closed and that people are encouraged not go over the top. And even on a good day, literally just 0.005% of the UK population read a post on here or receive our emails!

    • Michael Christie says:

Are you mental !!! No one else finds it frustrating bar you…….if it wasnt posted here how would you know !!!!!!!!

    • Nick says:

It’s not a problem unless you go crazy and order loads. I am certain that Tescos are aware that people are doing this just for the clubcard points, but on the other hand I imagine they make a profit on selling 1,200 Avios for a fiver.

      • Rob says:

Doubt it. They certainly don’t make a profit if you use your £5 voucher instore for £10 of stuff under the ‘double up’ deal.

  • Kevincm @ GhettoIFE says:

Tried my local Tesco (Superstore) last night.

No offer on display other than the poster, but a scan of the box at checkout have 500 clubs card points (PS3 Version).

Will have another go with another version tommorow

  • JimmyG says:

    Good Morning All,

Does anyone know if this is still working today?

    Cheers

    Jimmy

  • Lucas says:

Does anybody know whether I can purchase the game at ANY Tesco Metro? I saw few comments re successful orders at Metro, but went yesterday to the Metro store close to my place and the staff had no clue what I am talking about. Should I walk into the store and “force” them to enter the bar codes? Or at some Metros I simply cannot order the game…? Thanks!

    • Rob says:

Put the bar code numbers into a self service till (click ‘Item won’t scan’). Supervisor will need to approve due to 7 years age restriction. You will need to put your wallet or something in the bagging area to create weight.

      • Lucas says:

        Thanks

        • Singing Dwarf says:

Or use an online EAN13 barcode generator to create the applicable barcodes and scan – easier than keying in all three barcode numbers and it works.

NB whichever method you use, the till shows the operator the name of the items requiring approval as SKYLANDERSSWAP. The operator authorizing my purchase rummaged through my bag to see what it was and I had to explain it was a game and why it wasn’t in the bag!

  • Georgie says:

@ Singing Dwarf, I think it is more likely that £200 of 3V’s flagged your account than buying 2 CoDs. Two CoDs on different formats is normal shopping behaviour. I know many buy loads more 3V than this but it is still a form of extreme shopping behaviour and unfortunately the odd time it gets noticed.

  • Neil says:

Bought a copy this morning and can confirm that it’s still working. I’m yet to see any 3DS versions of the game though. I uses the barcode above for the Wii version and it worked- does anyone know if that is for the regular Wii or the Wii U?

  • Adam W says:

Why have you again stated that “you are guaranteed to get a copy”??? Please show me where Tesco state that is the case?

All the customer is doing is purchasing the right to a £5 discount if the product is in stock!

    • Rob says:

True, apologies. I over-simplified the process. However, it doesn’t make any difference for our purposes since I doubt anyone will be going back to collect!

      • Adam W says:

and even if they do, it is admittedly unlikely that they would be out of stock. However when pre-ordering COD’s previously, even the check-out ladies have complained to me that they have been caught out by expecting the pre-order to guarantee them a copy on release day. They went to collect and the end of their shift and found out that their store had sold out.

Personally, I think it’s naughty of Tesco to even call these sales pre-orders! It’s a pre-paid discount! Nothing more!

  • Ian says:

If you use a Double Points coupon from the clubcard statement does it double the 500 points?
