How to support Philippines disaster relief

Hilton HHonors has teamed up with Global Giving to offer 10 Hilton HHonors points for every US$1 donated to aiding the recovery efforts from Super Typhoon Haiyan.  If you were considering donating to this appeal, you may be interested in this – see here.

Note, though, that as a non-EU charity you cannot claim Gift Aid tax relief on your donation if you give via this route.

Hyatt is allowing Gold Passport members to donate miles to support the relief effort, with 5,000 points generating a $25 donation.  You can only donate points by telephone via a Hyatt service centre, though, and the donation rate is not exceptionally generous in my view.

United Airlines is also offering miles to those who donate to the American Red Cross, although only a modest number.

Frankly, because of the absence of tax relief, I would suggest that readers who want to contribute give directly to the Disasters Emergency Committee appeal here.  Gift Aid will add 20% to the value of your donation, with additional relief for higher rate taxpayers.
