Starwood is offering a 15%-25% discount when you purchase SPG Starpoints before 13th December. The link to buy is here.

At the top end, 20,000 points will cost you $525. These can be converted in 25,000 airline miles in the majority of programmes. The price per mile works out at 1.3p, which is certainly not a bargain but less than a lot of airlines charge for buying their miles directly.

SPG Starwood 350

There is, by the way, no discount at all on buying up to 4,500 points. This is a practice which I don’t like – I don’t see why someone who only needs a small number of points to top off their account should not receive some sort of discount, even if it was just 10%.

The rules are straightforward – points post within 24 hours, maximum purchase of 20,000 points per year, your SPG account must be 14 days old to participate.

The ‘sweet spot’ with Starwood was historically their ‘cash and points awards’ for mid-tier properties. As I wrote back in April, Starwood ‘cash and points’ deals have been ‘enhanced’ and offer poorer value than they did, albeit that they are now available at a wider range of properties.

It can still make sense to buy ALL the points you need for a room, though. The Sheraton at Frankfurt Airport, for example, costs a crazy €386 on 20th November. Alternatively, you could buy 10,000 SPG points for just $280 / €208. The reward night would also be cancellable, whilst the €386 room I quoted is not.

  • Ben says:

Does anyone know whether buying these points would count towards the spending target for the Amex cards?

    • Jermyn says:

In my experience with points purchases:

They will count towards the spending target but will not give you the 2x bonus for travel/entertainment as the transaction will be processed by points.com, rather than the underlying company.

This has been the case with US Airways, VS and AA points. Maybe somebody who has bought SPG points can confirm.

      —————-

I’m seriously considering this as a way of getting the remaining AA miles for a pair of EY F tickets. Certainly above a 1.3ppm value in that.

    • Rob says:

Yes, they count as a ‘purchase’

  • James67 says:

I am considering buying too to round up AA miles, and topping up with MR tranfer to do a redemption on the Westin Osaka which is £300+ per night. Does anybody know ifamex ever does a conversion bonus to SPG? Alterbatively any good ways to get IHG points spart from earning, purchsse or cc?

    • Rob says:

No, never been an Amex to SPG bonus. It is pointless for them, since most SPG members convert onwards to airline miles and SPG would end up losing money!

IHG – 40,000 points for £99 if you get the Black Visa credit card. You can also get 30,000 points on a new account from scratch with one stay (could be as low as £29 for a weekend HIX if you live in the regions) if you register for every single code in my promo codes thread AND the Flyertalk codes thread AND The Big Win promo. I registered a mate last week and he got 35,000 from a $900 stay.

      • James67 says:

Thx Rob, I will not delay on the spg purchase and MR transfer then as it works for me in Japan. I already had black visa so probably eill net get the points so I am not sure it’s worth risking £99. My first stay of year at IHG coming up and I have all codes stacked so hopefully get 15-20k points. Feeling a bit sore about itvthough as it should have been £60 but a hidden second person charge resulted in my paying £100. I caught between a rock and a hard place, want to complain but dont want them messing with my account and end up missing sny of the promo points as they are again potrntially worth more to me in Japan than I feel I lost on this upcoming stay.

  • Idrive says:

Hello, when buying SPG starpoints…is points.com debiting $$$ on the account, therefore that would trigger “abroad spending x2” bonus on Gold Preferred Amex?

  • Idrive says:

    Thanks Raffles
