Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Open forum …. got any suggestions for tweaking the site?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

It is now nine months since Head for Points got its fresh new look, and – for want of a better word – started looking ‘professional’.   I have continued to change elements here and there – some big changes, such as adding the ‘Hotel Offers’ page, and many small changes which on their own don’t really get noticed.

However, I am fully aware that there is an element of ‘snow blindness’ in what I do.  After all, I look at the site every day for a considerable period of time, and I can only second-guess how you, the readers, respond to the different elements.

As we start a new year, I’d like to open up the floor to any suggestions you have about the layout of the siteRemember that I need to cater for two audiences at the same time – the regular readers and the hundreds of people who come here via Google each day and who I want to convert into regular readers.

Is it clear to a newcomer what the site is about and why they should keep on reading it?

Are there too many menus at the top of the page?  Too few?

Are there too many ads?  (Probably not, most sites would run ads inside posts as well, which I don’t)

Are the sidebars too confusing?  Should I push the social media links more?

Should there be more ‘sticky’ information for newcomers?

Does the current format of running a fixed number of stories at fixed times every day –  with a ‘lead’ story and two less important ones below – work for you?  (Most sites just post at random times throughout the day, but I am middle-aged and grew up with the newspaper tradition!)

If there is anything about the way the site currently looks that annoys or confuses you, or if you have any ideas for improvements, please post below.  You can also email me at rob at headforpoints.com if you’d prefer.

Anything from your dislike of how I punctuate the headlines in the sidebars through to ideas for new ‘sticky’ pages are welcome – no idea is too small!

Thank you, and a Happy New Year for 2014.

There’s always tweaking which can be done to menus etc. but as a regular reader I have to say I like it the way it is. You don’t want to start making changes for change’s sake (cough Apple uncough) with the result that none of your regular readers know how to find things. For me, your site works perfectly well the way it is working right now. I also like the posts being published at the same time each day because it means that I can drop in before I start work and know that there won’t be any substantive updates for the rest of the day (unless there is a good deal on). If posting was throughout the day I fear my productivity would drop!

Good Morning Raffles and Happy New Year.

I’m with Alex-the site works perfectly!

    Thank you,

    Worz.

Happy, safe & avios filled 2014 to all. I’m in the “if it ain’t broke don’t fiddle camp” but if forced to make a suggestion, is a more inclusive search facility possible?

      • Rich says:

You can use Google to search the site by typing “site:headforpoints.com” followed by whatever you are searching for. This will only search Google’s index, so new articles won’t be included until they have been crawled.

Yes, I know. Google would even pay me a penny here and there for doing it! WordPress has improved their search function recently, and now lists results in its best guess of relevance rather than just strictly date order.

Happy new year Rob and all HfPers.

How about a breaking news tab which remains prrmanently unlocked. We could post in it any news or offers we come across. Would need some rules though; one lunk to offer or news so you do not lose too much time moderating, no posting of news or offers previously posted, and no discussion of the news offers in multiple posts to avoid complexity and overlong thread. If you consider offer or newsworthy of further discussion you could use it as a basis for a subsequent normal blog entry. If this could work it may relieve pressure on you too to find suitabld posts all the time.

To be honest, I prefer people to email me if they find something interesting (or post it as a comment to a random post, I will see it anyway). I can then do a ‘proper’ post which will have a HFP-style analysis, which is what I think people value.

The interesting thing about the internet world is that facts are cheap but analysis has value. When I was younger, I used to make money selling ‘facts’ (trade directories) – all that stuff can be found anywhere on line today for nothing.

Understood, and I see it works as you frequently acknowledge posts that were inspired by tips from other contributors. Like others, I am very happy with current format too, a quick look has become part of my normal routine 🙂

To any of us daily readers, any changes would be wrong…
As it currently stands it is a very good, solid site. Newcomers as we all were at some stage can easity navigate around it and find what they are looking for.
Only thing I would perhaps add, would be a forum area for off topic discussions..
        Happy new year.

Works really well for me too… Like the timing, and can always check the comments as and when! Comments format extremely useful, love how we all help each other out too! Happy new collecting year !

Happ New Year and all the best wishes to you and HFP. Thank you for another year of a brilliant management of HFP.

I’m happy with the existing look and feel of the website and don’t see a need to teak HFP.

It’s a great site Raffles and I came across it by accident earlier this but not sure how so something is clearly working there.
I like the posts at the same time each day and I think I am not alone in building that into my morning routine so I wouldn’t want to see that changed.
Keep up the good work and Happy New Year!

I think its a great site – the current stickies and links work well – if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. I used to go to flyertalk regularly but don’t bother anymore and just come to this site. Flyertalk too full of moaning and groaning 😉
