Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Open forum …. got any suggestions for tweaking the site?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

It is now nine months since Head for Points got its fresh new look, and – for want of a better word – started looking ‘professional’.   I have continued to change elements here and there – some big changes, such as adding the ‘Hotel Offers’ page, and many small changes which on their own don’t really get noticed.

However, I am fully aware that there is an element of ‘snow blindness’ in what I do.  After all, I look at the site every day for a considerable period of time, and I can only second-guess how you, the readers, respond to the different elements.

As we start a new year, I’d like to open up the floor to any suggestions you have about the layout of the siteRemember that I need to cater for two audiences at the same time – the regular readers and the hundreds of people who come here via Google each day and who I want to convert into regular readers.

Is it clear to a newcomer what the site is about and why they should keep on reading it?

Are there too many menus at the top of the page?  Too few?

Are there too many ads?  (Probably not, most sites would run ads inside posts as well, which I don’t)

Are the sidebars too confusing?  Should I push the social media links more?

Should there be more ‘sticky’ information for newcomers?

Does the current format of running a fixed number of stories at fixed times every day –  with a ‘lead’ story and two less important ones below – work for you?  (Most sites just post at random times throughout the day, but I am middle-aged and grew up with the newspaper tradition!)

If there is anything about the way the site currently looks that annoys or confuses you, or if you have any ideas for improvements, please post below.  You can also email me at rob at headforpoints.com if you’d prefer.

Anything from your dislike of how I punctuate the headlines in the sidebars through to ideas for new ‘sticky’ pages are welcome – no idea is too small!

Thank you, and a Happy New Year for 2014.

Another thought on my stroll was that 3 posts a day might not need to be the norm, barring holidays etc.

    7 days = (3×3) + (4×2) would be very acceptable AFAIAC.

    • Rob says:

3 a day seems to work, however illogical it seems. That said, I won’t start throwing up any old rubbish just to fill the space!

      • squills says:

        Have a good one Rob.

Never had rubbish, all been good, some admittedly not possibly quite as good as the other good ones but still good & amusing.

    Happy New Year!
The only minor issue I have is that I lose track of interesting conversations in the comments sections.

As the conversations are tied to a specific post, I often lose track/ interest, once the post has left the front page.

Maybe you could create specific discussion posts which would be “pinned” for a while, where we could have longer discussions.

I think this wold be a happy medium between the current system and an outright forum.

Other than that, love the site. Keep up the good work!

Happy New Year etc, just to say I love this site, I’ve had Airmiles for years but never really pushed to collect them until someone told me they got a cheap (ok relatively) business flight etc. So Avios it is now but I’ve had so many tips and ideas since discovering your site 6 months ago, just to say a big pat on the back to you, by the comments above there is a lot of praise here! I’d be happy if you left it as is. Cheers

How about an android app Rob?

    Happy new year!

    • Rob says:

Here’s the problem with apps. They cost me money to set up (it isn’t difficult, there are people who can turn your blog into an app for a monthly fee but you do pay).

And then, ironically, I end up losing money because people would switch from tablet/ PC to their phone and I would lose ad revenue!

HNY Rob. It works well. I love the three items a day posted early in the day format. There is always the option to do a rare extra item as you did with the Redspottedhanky limited offer. Unlike forums where you need to keep checking throughout the day for breaking news, the blog is a breath of fresh air. I also think 7 days for comments is fine, on some of the more popular topics (3V) they still became a mission to read, if you left it a while, 14 days would have been daunting.

    Robert/Raffles,

“The UK’s site for Avios, British Airways Executive Club and more!”

    1) Focus on your speciality! There has been way too much drivel on chain hotels – unless there is a direct relevance don’t do it! The catchline makes this site my daily but I am horrified that most of it is consumed on hotel chains I will never, ever stay at. Even if I had my soul removed, I hope I would never stay at any.

This, as you may have gathered by my historical comments, is my single biggest complaint about your site. Please understand that I read your site at least daily. However, I believe in value in all things and this includes hotels. Why pay 4x plus for U.S. blandness when you are travelling?

    2) We don’t need three posts a day if there is nothing to say. No news is good news. Excessive posts are irritating.

    3) For those who subscribe, let us have the latest news rather than a regurgitation of your previous posts

I feel that is enough for now.

Many of us are interested in hotel news.

I think the site is great as it is.

      • Alan says:

Ditto – Avios – only would be too restricted IMHO. Esp with MR-earning cards I think it’s important to cover all potential points opportunities 🙂

      • Will says:

I am here for Avios and IHG, but I like the other posts e.g. RSH codes, Tesco etc and have made use of most of them where I can and it adds value.

        • Rob says:

Exactly. I work on the basis that a typical HFP reader is keen on a good deal of whatever kind, so as long as its travel related then I will run it. I won’t drift off into non-travel stuff, though, or we become MSE!

          • Idrive says:

            agree with this!
Will post my full thoughts later!
Happy NEW YEAR!! another one of successes and miles/points over loads!

  • Mark says:

HNY to Raffles and all of my fellow HFP readers!

I suppose I must be in a bit of a minority here as my primary focus is collecting Clubcard points; sans Avios, but I love to read the blog just the same and am well aware that it is primarily geared up to cater for those of you who are lucky enough to be able to regularly participate in the various travel loyalty schemes etc. My first thought when I read the email notification for this article this morning was “how about a forum?” but with the likes of FT, PTS et al it would be pretty redundant. That said, those who who comment on here seem like a good bunch so a place to wax lyrical, so to speak, mightn’t be such a bad idea.

Just keep doing what you’re doing!

  • AndyGWP says:

I enjoy the site – it offers a lot of information at a level that I understand 🙂

My only suggestion would be to allow people who post ‘comments’ to be able to be registered – if they so wish – and if so they retain their username, can edit their own posts etc and can be thanked / liked (in an MSE / Facebook style using a button) by other site visitors for their helpful contributions.

I expect this is a limitation of Wordpress though and can’t be achieved but will mention it anyways 🙂
