Hilton HHonors in ‘very small devaluation’ shocker

Following from IHG’s announcement that there would be a general reduction in points levels required for redemptions from April 15th, Hilton HHonors has published its annual list of category changes.

(This will, apparently, be the last annual Hilton list of category changes.  Moves up and down will now be posted on the Hilton website on an on-going basis.)

This page on the Hilton website has all the information.  The changes kick in on April 15th.

Of note:

New openings

Hampton by Hilton Sheffield opened March 12th and is Category 2.  This is laughably cheap for a new-build hotel which also includes free breakfast and free internet for everyone.  You pay just 10,000 points per night.

The Hampton in Waterloo (already open) is Category 7 which means 30,000 – 60,000 points per night.  With such a huge range (and the hotel can change pricing month to month) it is hard to say if it is decent value.

The Concorde Opera in Paris is a Category 9 (50,000 – 80,000 points per night)

Doubletree The Point in Edinburgh is a Category 4 (20,000 – 30,000 points).  This could be good value but I don’t know anything about the property or its location.

Decreases

Of the few hotels falling in price, the only ones of interest are three hotels in Barcelona.

Increases

Of the hotels going up, the biggest jump is one of the most useful to a UK audience.  The Conrad Algarve in Portugal (picture above) jumps from Category 7 to Category 9, which sees it at a maximum of 80,000 points per night.  You might remember that this hotel was in the ‘Avios 50% sale’ in January, when a week in peak season was reduced to just over £1,000 – astonishing value.

All in all, not much is happening.  However, as Hilton is now using ‘pricing bands’ for most categories, it is very easy for hotels to sneakily increase in price.  A hotel which was Category 7 charging 30,000 points per night can double in price to 60,000 points per night for the corresponding month of the year and still call itself Category 7.  Clever, eh?

Is the new Hampton @ LGW worth a mention to HFP readers?

    • John says:

Stayed there yesterday. No HH status. It wasn’t very good, but I had some HH points to burn. Will prob go for a cheap accor next time if i ever need to use LGWin the monrning.

      • Rob says:

How not good? It is brand new and breakfast and internet are free?

      • Fenny says:

I’m staying for a night next month before a 9am flight. Breakfast, wifi and a walk into the terminal seem like the right combination.

      • N says:

I unexpectedly stayed there for free on Tuesday, having been bounced from Hampton Croydon. The reception staff weren’t very responsive, but otherwise all good. I’d stay again.

  • Jeff says:

The Point Hotel has long been located on Bread Street in Edinburgh – Hilton/Doubletree have clearly taken it over. Decent location mind, not to mention being situated adjacent to the infamous ‘pubic triangle’ !

  • goglobalnz says:

I stayed when it was called The Point several years ago – brilliant roof terrace plus I seem to recall that Sean Connery used to work in the building as a milkman years ago? I wonder if Hilton still have his picture up?

  • Nathan says:

Only sort of related but want a week away in a hilton (want to retain my diamond membership mainly) and looking for somewhere hot end of June. Any recommendations, sun,sea and cocktails (for the mrs)?

    • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

What’s your budget/willingness to travel? You’ve only narrowed it down to a few dozen properties!

    • Nathan says:

Any budget really and travel wise I’m not to picky! Have been looking at the Conrad in bali! But open to the experienced suggestions from HfP readers!

  • vonnie says:

How are Hilton for adding your card to bookings made via third parties?

    thanks

    • Alan says:

They’re OK at giving you elite benefits as per you HHonors tier, but don’t expect stay credit or points (occasionally they do post but that’s very much the exception as they’re excluded from earning under the T&Cs)

      • kipto says:

do you have to show your card when checking in at Hilton if booking via third party ?

        • Alan says:

If you had it to had that might be the easiest way but I’m sure you can give them the number at check-in – perhaps just print it out from the Hilton website?

          • kipto says:

thanks. I will be Hilton gold after next week. off to usa in summer with family. I get free breakfast for two with gold. will they make me pay for the kids for breakfast or is it at the discretion of each hotel. ?

          • Alan says:

Technically it’s just you and a guest but a lot of them are fairly flexible, especially if the children are younger!

  • Graham says:

    Hi Raffles,
The doubletree in Edinburgh seems to be unbookable using points, where as it was just a few days ago. Is this normal during a category update? It was available for 12k points + ~£30…. really wish I had booked it earlier in the week now!!
    Cheers

    • Graham says:

Correction – it seems to be bookable on points in the very short term (this month) but nothing after. 🙁

      • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

Availability on points and cash redemptions tends to be less widespread than pure points redemptions, which are generally aligned to last-room availability.
