Very aggressive Virgin Atlantic economy promo – DOUBLE status points and 50% bonus miles

Virgin Flying Club launched a new promotion yesterday aimed at long-haul economy travellers.  If you are interested in achieving status with Virgin Atlantic it is very, very interesting.

Take a look at the website for Sky High Rewards.

Virgin Atlantic 747

Here is a summary of what is on offer:

2 bonus tier points per economy SECTOR

50% bonus Flying Club base miles per economy flight

Register by 10th June

Fly by 10th July

To understand why the bonus tier points are so generous, you need to understand how the Virgin status system works.

Silver status requires 15 tier points in a rolling 12 month period.   Gold requires 40 tier points.

Economy flights usually earn 2 tier points per sector for cheaper tickets and 3 per sector for flexible economy tickets.

Even starting from scratch, you would achieve Silver status with two super-cheap economy return flights during this period.  You would be pushing it to achieve Gold – that would require 5 round trips in cheap economy or 4 round trips in ‘flexible’ economy – but you could get yourself fairly close.

As an example, a normal economy return to New York would earn 6,916 Flying Club miles and four tier points.  Under this offer, you would earn 10,374 miles and eight tier points.

There is no limit to the number of flights you can take which quality for the bonus.  ALL economy cash tickets qualify, even down to cheapest ‘O’ class ticket.

This promotion does NOT apply to Virgin Little Red domestic flights.  It only applies to Virgin Atlantic long-haul flights.  Codeshares are also excluded.

You do not receive any bonus for flying in Upper Class or Premium Economy.

What does Virgin Flying Club status get you?

This PDF outlines the full benefits of Gold and Silver status.  Silver is not hugely useful with the only real benefit being a 50% miles bonus.

The real action starts when you are Gold.  Benefits include:

Clubhouse access for you and a guest whatever class you fly

Heathrow arrivals lounge access

Use of Upper Class check-in

Clubhouse guest passes to give away (needs 60 points)

Fast Track security at Heathrow and Gatwick

100% miles bonus

Silver status for a companion

Ability to have an account for your children

Cabin upgrade voucher (needs 80 points)

Don’t forget that you MUST register via the link above to take advantage of this deal.  You will not receive the bonus miles and tier points automatically.

Indeed a good offer if you are travelling Y, but shame VS doesn’t have a full on LHR/LGW style clubhouse in Manchester for Golds.

  • Max says:

I am surprised they bother with Manchester long haul flights now they have Little Red to ferry people down to LHR.

Can’t see it would be worth their investment to have a Clubhouse in manchester Airport. And as they don’t, I guess they can’t either.

  • Maciek says:

Would this be valid on Virgin operated flights on Delta stock ticket?

  • nux says:

“Even starting from scratch, you would achieve Silver status with two super-cheap economy flights during this period.”

Wouldn’t silver require two return flights, or 4 sectors?

    • Rob says:

Bad writing on my part. I meant ‘return flights’ – I was using ‘flights’ in the conversational way rather than the technical definition of ‘flight’ ie a sector!
