Generous Club Carlson offer – 20,000 points (2,000 Avios or £100) for a weekend stay

  Any idea whether this would combine with the standard 2for1 Gold members weekend offer you mentioned recently? I know the T&Cs say “This Offer may not be used in conjunction with any other package, promotion, group or convention rate, or any other discounted rate.” but you sometimes indicate that certain chains aren’t so strict about these things. thx

    If the hotel posts it as a 2-night stay then you will get the bonus. If the hotel credits you with 1 qualifying night then you won’t. This end up being down to how each individual hotel treats the 241 rate.

      Unusually I have to say I’m not getting your valuation here. Amex Mr convert to avios at 1:1 and Carlson at 1:3. If you value avios at about £7.50 per 1000 then 1000 Carlson are worth about £2.50. Also an average Carlson hotel available for redemption at 28k points can often be gotten for about £60 a night in cash (or less) so again this backs up a value of about £2.50 per 1000 Carlson. Just my 2 cents anyway…. as you say many times, the value one has for points is very personal.

        Carlson is good for £5 per 1000 at the top end. I used 100k for £638 of last minute rooms in London last week. The key with all hotel schemes is to know when to pay and when to use points.

        I used cash for a Hilton on Thu as the points rate was very bad. I am now in a Conrad using points as the value is better.

        I just spent 100,000 points for a 2-night stay at a hotel that would have cost me a bit under £800 to book. I’m hugely impressed with this, as I have been with the value I get for SPG points (especially as those points were bought in the flash sale that Raffles advertised a week or so ago).

        The days of focussing on avios are over – I’m looking at hotels now when redeeming MR.

  I am just about to book 9 rooms that would qualify. That’s 180,000 points. Sounds great… until I saw the bit that said only one set of bonus points per club carlson member, regardless of the number of eligible stays!

    That’s the problem, isn’t it! I booked 2 hotels with Best Western and found them significantly cheaper on Hotels.com. Emailed them for a price match and they said they wouldn’t match the price because they were “on sale” on hotels.com. So I cancelled and booked with hotels.com. Saved nearly 80 and will get 10% cash back. First hotel gave me points, second one didn’t. But I don’t get any qualifying nights to keep my diamond status next year.

  Something i’ve just noticed…

  I just got points for a recent stay where the room cost £96. Room points awarded were 2,490.
  Points are awarded at a rate of 20 per US$ so the room is effectively $124.50 so means I’m getting an exchange rate of 1.297 per £.

  Other locations I got 1.44, 1.45, 1.32, all stays including the above were between 22nd June and 10th July.

  I appreciate sterling has increased as of late, but the conversion rate they are using is virtually criminal!

    Is that the rate excluding tax? If not that might explain the discrepancy in exchange rate.
