NEW: redeem Hyatt points for dining and spa credit in London and Birmingham

Hyatt Gold Passport has been slowly rolling out its ‘Dining, Spa & More’ redemption option to more countries.

They have now reached the UK.  The three participating hotels are:

Hyatt Regency Birmingham (restaurant and spa)

Hyatt Regency London, Churchill (restaurant)

Andaz London (restaurant)

That is the good news.  The bad news is that the redemption rates are not great.This is the value you get:

2,000 points – $10 (0.29p)

5,000 points – $25 (0.29p)

10,000 points – $50 (0.29p)

12,000 points – $75 (0.36p)

15,000 points – $100 (0.39p)

20,000 points – $150 (0.44p)

32,000 points – $250 (0.46p)

60,000 points – $500 (0.49p)

120,000 points – $1,000 (0.49p)

I generally assume that a Hyatt Gold Passport point is worth 1p.  You are losing 50%-70% of the value by redeeming for a restaurant or spa award.

How to redeem

If you do decide to redeem, the process is very simple.  You do NOT need to redeem for a voucher in advance.  You simply turn up at the restaurant or spa and hand over your Gold Passport card at the time of payment.

Because points can only be deducted in the multiples above, and because you cannot receive change in the form of cash or points, Hyatt recommends that you pay the largest possible amount in points and then top up with cash.

Each hotel will have converted the chart above into local currency.  The deal may end up being even worse than I calculated above depending on the exchange rate used.

You can also earn Hyatt Gold Passport points when dining at the hotels above.  Simply hand over your Gold Passport card when paying.  This applies even if you are not a guest in the hotel.

All in all, I would not recommend this route if you think that you will be able to use the points for a room redemption instead.  You will get at least double the value by redeeming for a free night compared to redeeming for a free meal.

If you have more Hyatt points than you can see yourself using, of course, then it is good to have another option to spend them.  Hyatt also deserves praise for making the redemption process very easy.
