Shangri-La’s new Instant Dining Awards – get more value at The Shard

A lot of Head for Points readers have been enjoying free or heavily reduced meals and drinks in the Shangri-La Hotel in The Shard in London in recent weeks.  They have been redeeming the 1,200 Shangri-La Golden Circle points that were offered during a promotion last year and which convert into £55 per 1,000 points.

I got an email from Shangri-La yesterday to announce that they have launched Instant Dining Awards. (EDIT: After a reader enquired, it seems that this cannot yet be done at The Shard – see the comments – although presumably it will roll out soon.)

Instant Dining Awards allow you to pay part or all of your Shangri-La restaurant or bar bill with your Golden Circle points.

There seem to be both good and bad reasons for doing this compared to the alternative, which is redeeming 1,000 points for a £55 / $100 voucher:

Instant Awards allow you to use up your ENTIRE Shangri-La points balance.  At present, anyone who has visited The Shard will have redeemed 1,000 points for a £55 voucher.  If you earned the full 1,200 points from the promotion last year, you will have been stuck with 200 orphan points.  With Instant Awards, you can redeem your entire 1,200 points balance so you will get £66 of value for the points.

The rules are a bit vague.  However, there is an implication that only ONE Golden Circle card can be applied to each bill.  If you redeem for vouchers, you are allowed to mix together vouchers from different accounts.

You will not earn Golden Circle points for the part of the cost of your meal paid for with Instant Awards. People do seem to be earning points on the whole bill sometimes if they pay with the paper vouchers. (EDIT: This comment was amended following a comment below.)

Instant Awards cannot be used to pay for the service charge element of your bill.  I don’t think this applies if you use a paper voucher.

With Instant Awards, you are reliant on the Shangri-La IT system working at the time you pay.  The rules state that, if the hotel cannot verify your card balance, it is tough luck and you will have to pay in cash.  You may prefer to order a paper voucher to give yourself 100% certainty of being able to use it.

You need your physical Golden Circle membership card to hand to use an Instant Award, as well as photo ID.

The good news is that paper redemption vouchers (£55 per 1000 points) will still be available.  If any of the small print issues I highlighted above are a problem – it is for me, as I was planning to use a voucher from my account and from my wifes account to settle the same bill – you can still order those via the Shangri-La website.

Hmm, so I still have 4 accounts with 1000, 1000, 800 and 800 points. New options are always good.

The question is, if you can earn points from paying with vouchers, but use multiple accounts, which person gets the points? Because if you need a plastic card to use up the remaining 300 points with this instant reward thing then the people whose names the 800 point accounts are in will need to be present..

Till when are The points valid?

I was going to make a booking yesterday, then saw this email, so this is a timely post indeed.

I agree the terms are a bit vague. On one hand they mention:

“Instant Dining Awards may only be redeemed for the Member’s personal use and the Member must be present upon settlement of the bill at the food and beverage outlet. Nominees may not redeem Instant Dining Awards.”

But on the other hand (notice the S’):

“MemberS must present their Membership cardS and valid photo identity documents for verification to complete the redemption. The name of the identity document must match the name printed on the Membership card. ”

I set-up and played the games for four accounts, so I now have 1200 in each. Since the four people named on the account are the four people going, I’m hoping I can use all the points from everyone. I’m not concerned about not being able to pay the service charge, since I prefer to leave my own tip, rather than being told what I have to leave.

That may be a pointless risk though. The cap on using paper vouchers has been removed and you are no longer limited to $200 per bill. If you use paper vouchers, you are guaranteed to get $400 / £220 off your bill.

If you go for Instant Award, you run the risk that they only let you use one card per bill and your discount is capped at £66.

From your post above “You will not earn Golden Circle points for the cost of your meal if you pay, in part or in full, with Instant Awards”. You will if you pay in part as the excess will earn Golden Circle points – “If partial payment is made by redemption of Instant Dining Awards, the remaining balance must be settled by cash, credit card or other payment method and will be eligible to earn GC Award Points”.

Sounds like for those with a 1000 (or 500) points, the vouchers are still the wise choice. Like others, I’ve never received a physical card. I assume a print out or the app along with ID would be enough.

Gong is very impressive, I was there last week. Definitely book in advance, and ask for a window table. Check out the swimming pool which is hidden away on the left (west) hand side. The Japanese style toilet is also a novelty.

Well, stupid me booked the vouchers before checking if there was any available next Saturday.

Ting lounge/restaurant booked out all day and evening.

Anyone know a) If there is food in the Gone Bar b) what it’s like ?

There’s a link to the menu further up this page.

    • Trevor says:

Your emailed voucher confirmation is supposed to be valid for 6 months, so not the end of the world just yet. Restaurant availability in the evening starts in mid Oct, so you still have plenty time to use them.

      • trickster says:

That assumes this person is based in London. I nearly had a similar issue for next week, but found lunch availability, in both Ting Lounge and Restaurant, for next Thursday by calling up.

Therefore, I’d advise getting on the phone – they were most helpful. I received an email confirmation and have since made amendments by email .

  • Trevor says:

I’d say you’d be touch n go with a lunch order. While the restaurant is open all day, you might be restricted to the over-priced tea and sandwiches option for your booking.

There is no business centre, you simply go to Reception on the 35th.

  • pazza2000 says:

Is there any expectation that the voucher redemption method will disappear? I signed up 4 accounts for various family members but kicking myself for not doing more. Had a great meal in AUH a few months ago and a couple of drinks in Gong last week. One lot of points left which I’m planning on putting towards afternoon tea which 1200 points should cover nicely.
