Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

You can now use Miles & More miles for Spotify and iTunes gift cards

Miles & More, the Lufthansa / Swiss / Austrian etc scheme, has launched a new option to help you use up any small amounts of Miles & More miles you may have.

(Remember, as I wrote in my article on expiry dates at the weekend, Miles & More miles expire after three years and there is nothing you can do to stop it unless you have their credit card or have status.)

Predictably, the exchange rate is terrible.

Miles & More gift cards

For iTunes, the rate is:

3,800 miles = £10

5,700 miles = £15

9,500 miles = £25

19,000 miles = £50

The levels are slightly different for Spotify and Zalando but the ‘exchange rate’ remains the same – just 0.26p per mile.  That is roughly 30% of what you would get if you redeemed for a long-haul business class flight.

This is the same rate you get if you choose to redeem your Miles & More miles for Heathrow Airport shopping vouchers.  The iTunes route requires a smaller number of miles (3,800 vs 7,500 for Heathrow vouchers) and is less ‘fiddly’ as you get emailed your code instead of having to receive a paper Heathrow shopping voucher and then trying to avoid losing it.

You can also redeem small amounts of Miles & More miles for Best Western or Radisson hotel gift cards.  The headline rate is marginally better but, as the cards are denominated in Euros, they will be fiddly to use unless spent in a Eurozone country.

If you do want to redeem for iTunes, Spotify or Zalando, the link is here.

Thanks! Had 12k sitting there unused for ages, never thought I’d use them

The Raddision gift cards I beleive can be used in any currency with a 3% commision on top of the exchange rate. i.e. a euros card can be spent in the UK

This will sound a bit like a nasty trick, but I effectively managed to exchange M&M miles for cash just a week ago. I had about 10k+ expiring miles that wouldn’t be put to any use and opted to exchange them for Heathrow Rewards vouchers. Flying out last Friday I purchased something from Dixons Travel that I ended up regretting just a day later. I went to a high-street Currys/PC World to see about a refund or store credit, where I was given cash in hand instead.

Quite happy with that, even though not intentional to begin with!

Great ! I no longer fly Lufthansa and my miles keep expiring.
I requested a Spotify code this morning but I’m still waiting “to be processed”.

Great! However I am missing 400 miles to get a reward. Is there an easy way to get this (without flying or signing up for their credit card)?

    • Rob says:

Heathrow Rewards, tiny SPG transfer (but only possible if you are SPG Platinum and can do small transfers), credit a car hire or hotel stay

Did anybody else receive any notification from Lufthansa Miles&More to say that they have now removed the option to purchase extra miles ? I need to top up 1100 miles for an award and has always planned to purchase the small amount of extra miles. Only to find when I tried to book yesterday that Lufthansa Miles&More told me they stopped this as part of the program last July.

I don’t recall being advised by Lufthansa that this longstanding benefit has now been removed. I do recall, however promotion that offered extra miles when purchased quite recently. There was no hint at that time or since that they were going to take away the ability to buy miles completely.

    – Did anyone else receive any notification of this negative change from Miles&More?
    – Does anyone know of any quick ways to earn 1100 miles or so? My Heathrow rewards account is spent.

Interestingly, the rates have just got slightly worse. Now, for iTunes, I’m getting:

    3,900 miles = £10
    5,800 miles = £15
    9,700 miles = £25
    19,300 miles = £50

But given how much I use M&M (I have only really credited a handful of bottom of the barrel LX fares that didn’t earn elsewhere), I’m happy to cash them out for a small voucher before they expire. Don’t forget that Heathrow Rewards is double miles for transfers to M&M until the end of the year.

[…] don't know if this is limited to the UK, but you can also use them for iTunes and Spotify. (5000 of mine are expiring 3/31/15, although I haven't received a warning email. Not sure if […]
