As of last Thursday, American Express has increased the sign-up bonuses on the two British Airways American Express cards.

The Premium Plus version, with the £150 annual fee, now offers 25,000 Avios instead of 18,000 Avios. You must spend £3,000 within three months to receive the bonus.

The basic, free, card now offers 9,000 Avios instead of 3,000 Avios. You must spend £1,000 within three months to receive the bonus.

The representative APR on the Premium Plus card is 56.4% variable including the fee based on a £1200 credit limit. The representative APR on the free card is 15.9% variable.

My full review of the benefits of the Premium Plus card is here. Amex’s own home page is here.

My full review of the free card is here. This is actually the most improved deal jumping from 3,000 to 9,000 Avios. Amex’s own home page is here.  All of my reviews reflect these new bonuses.

This offer will be available until February 11th so there is no need to rush.

Yes, spend carries over and your ‘spend year’ remains the same

    • scottydoobuy says:

hi can i upgrade online or do i have to do it over the phone ?

      • JQ says:

You can upgrade online by applying for the BAPP card as a new application. Your existing BA card will be cancelled if your application is approved.

Phone would be best in order to clarify everything so that you have a record of what was said in case anything goes wrong.

    • JQ says:

Not sure what you’re asking but you can only get 1 voucher per year and the year remains the same regardless of whether you upgrade or downgrade.

    • Rob says:

You can do this to save a few months of BAPP fee. Your membership year never resets though and you can only earn 1 voucher per membership year. eg if your Amex year in March 2014 to March 2015 and you have triggered your voucher already, you could downgrade for 4 months (saving £40 of fee) and then upgrade back to BAPP next March for your March 2015 to March 2016 spend year.

      • Polly says:

You only get one per card year per person, so if you have a partner refer them and obtain the second one within a year. Either start off with the free card and then just before you hit the 10k spend upgrade online to the BAPP this avoiding the fee for almost the year.

  • Scottnothing says:

Yes. That was my experience when I upgraded in 2012. My spending in the period prior to the upgrade was credited toward the £10,000 minimum spend requirement under the BAPP T&Cs. Because I was already at £11,000 spent on the free card, my 2-4-1 was confirmed and showed up on my online account within 48 hours of the upgrade (which was a pleasant surprise).

  • Danksy says:

I referred a friend back in September, he was expecting 18,000 avios as a bonus, but 25,000 triggered last month (plus an additional 1,000 refer a friend!)

    • Jason says:

Which gets more points for a flight booking with BA?
BAPP or PRG in the first year with the travel bonus? My guess is you get 3 Avios or 3MR per £, although the amex points are bit hit and miss sometimes.
Better to have them in a MR account just in case there is a bonus IMO!

      • JQ says:

        BAPP gets 3 avios / £
PRG gets 2 MR / £ regardless of year, as it counts as travel spend. Never had a BA transaction get 3 MR, but hotels, car hire and petrol occasionally get 3 or 4 MR / £
Amex Travel on PRG gets 4 MR / £, again regardless of year

    • JQ says:

Yes, because this offer was running in September…

I’m looking to earn two 2-4-1 vouchers by next summer to book flights for a family of 4 in Summer 2016. I’ve just reapplied for the BAPP card having achieved the sign up bonus (but no voucher) and cancelled the card earlier in the year.
Is it possible for me to spend £20k and earn 2 vouchers (in my name) or would I need to spend the £10k and then downgrade and apply for another card in my wife’s name to earn the second voucher.
    Thanks

    • Rob says:

You have 2 options. As the BAPP vouchers last 2 years, you can earn 2 of your own by getting one this card year and then one the next card year. Both would still be valid in Summer 2016.

Alternatively get your wife her own BAPP card and put £10,000 through that.

  • Georgie says:

I’ve now got two 2 4 1’s and am struggling to spend them. No interest in going to Dubai or India where the main availability seems to be. Caribbean for when we can travel is sketchy and we’re not fussy which Island. Looks like they will be spent on Club Europe rather than wasted completely. May end up cancelling this card, as £150 fee and remembering to put £10,000 through in a specific timeframe is a pain if you can’t get best value from it.

  • Alan says:

Myself and my partner each got a Amex Gold cards this year and have qualified for the 20000 pts. Its looking unlikely will make the spend of £15,000 each for the 7500 pts. I am thinking it would be better for us both now to apply for the BA basic where would easily make the £1000 spend for the 9000 pts. I am going to have to down grade my Amex Gold next March to avoid paying the fee anyway so I might as well go for the BA card. Does anybody see a problem with this ?

    • Rob says:

No, you’re fine. You can get the BA card without cancelling Gold first, it may even be preferable as it doesn’t look like you’re churning.

  • Choons says:

I second the Georgie problem, I have run out of holidays and time and will just spend on CE.

  • jotaele says:

I currently have an AMEX Gold for which I have already got to the £2000 spend (in 2 months) and a BAPP for which I have already got to the £3000 spend (in 1 month)

I’m not interested in getting to the 241 voucher with the BAPP, I don’t see it as a great reward these days given the little availability for Avios flights.

I’m thinking of downgrading the BAPP to the no fee card and keep spending with the gold card (taking advantage of the double and triple points for the first year).

What do you guys think? Should I take another route?

    • Polly says:

Then immediately downgrade to the free BA card, and stick with gold for the first year. Then refer a partner if you have one for gold next year, plus also refer for BAPP when that year is up so you could effectively end up with the two cards bonus every year. Each of you alternating cards I mean.
