lastminute.com (currently for sale if press reports are to be believed) is offering a £20 carrot to persuade you to download its smartphone app.

Download the app from your local app store and book any hotel for £100 or more.  At check-out, use voucher code LMNAPP20.  £20 will be deducted from the total cost.

Before you ask …. I have tried using the code on the desktop lastminute.com website and it does not work.  However, nothing stops you using a desktop to research what hotels lastminute has to offer before turning to the app to book.

It is valid for bookings until Christmas Eve for stays which must be completed by January 31st.

If I use this to book a holiday inn, will it count towards the big win?

If you are booking a top secret hotel with a stated percentage discount, it is always worth checking that the discount is actually accurate. I booked a top secret room with an advertised 21% discount against the standard price. The problem was, lastminute.com only offered the room on a cancellable basis normally: the 21% discount against the cancellable price was really because the room was non cancellable rather than secret (I could have booked it with the hotel directly for the same price on a non cancellable basis). Anyway, I challenged it and ended up having the stay for free – a saving of about £400.

Interesting. How’d you manage to persuade them to comp the room?

I raised a complaint. Lastminute rejected it. I escalated it. It got to the point where their most senior person in customer relations said that they would happily offer a room for example with no breakfast at a 20% discount to a room with breakfast, and say that’s a legitimate use of the term “20% off” for booking top secret. I then called Amex and raised a When I got back I from New York there was a letter waiting for me from Amex saying that the merchant had accepted the error and refunded the booking in full. Which is amazing really, as I had only asked for the actual discount to be applied (about a £60 refund) when I was speaking to lastminute. I was also going to follow up with the ASA, but ran out of steam a bit.

The range of arguments and excuses that Lastminute came up with was really quite hilarious – they even tried to blame the hotel itself for the false advertising. I wouldn’t touch them again with a barge pole, but if people are booking top secret hotels it really is worth checking that you are actually getting the stated discount against a comparable room (i.e. non-cancellable).

Cant find the app on my ipad’s directory – nor on their web site.

It’s an iPhone app I think so make sure you’re not looking for iPad only apps.

The same thing happened for me when booking a Qatar flight with my Austrian credit card – it tracked with the Euro amount in pounds. Unfortunately, it then got changed to the ‘real’ amount… 🙁

  • Ed E says:

And the terms seem to not be 100% accurate. I have just used it for a booking for July 2015 (bloody weddings…) and it has gone through fine. I have lost all my Accor status so happy to take a discount on this stay.
