Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Open forum day …. any suggestions for tweaking the site?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

On January 1st last year I ran an ‘open forum’ where I opened up the comments to ideas on tweaking the site.  It worked well so I thought I would try it again.

I have continued to change various elements of the site here and there throughout 2014, although many were small changes which on their own don’t really get noticed.  I also added an Instagram site and there is a big overhaul of the daily emails ready to go which will be launched in the next couple of days.

In terms of content, it is now proving a lot easier to get companies to donate competition prizes to the site.  If you like what I have given away in 2014, you will be very impressed by what I have to offer during January.  There will be a big announcement on Saturday to kick off the year in style.

However, I am fully aware that there is an element of ‘snow blindness’ in what I do.  After all, I look at the site every day for a considerable period of time, and I can only second-guess how you, the readers, respond to the different elements.

As we start a new year, I’d like to open up the floor to any suggestions you have about the site. Remember that I need to cater for two audiences at the same time – the regular readers and the hundreds of people who come here via Google each day and who I want to convert into regular readers.

Is it clear to a newcomer what the site is about and why they should keep on reading it?

Are there too many menus at the top of the page? Too few?

Are there too many ads? (Probably not, most sites would run ads inside posts as well, which I don’t)

Are the sidebars too confusing? Should I push the social media links more?

Should there be more ‘sticky’ information for newcomers?

Does the mix of content – which veers from Tesco deals to airline deals to credit card sign-up offers – work for you?

Is the mix of news versus ‘reference / background’ articles (eg ‘How to use Combine My Avios with Iberia’) right?

Does the current format of running a fixed number of stories at fixed times every day – with a ‘lead’ story and two less important ones below – work for you?

If there is anything about the way the site currently looks that annoys or confuses you, or if you have any ideas for improvements, please post below. You can also email me at rob at headforpoints.com if you’d prefer.

Anything from your dislike of how I punctuate the headlines in the sidebars through to ideas for new ‘sticky’ pages are welcome – no idea is too small.  And, to be honest, small changes are easier to implement than large changes ….

Thank you, and a Happy New Year for 2015.

Very minor sticking point for me: I’m used to reading your articles as being written by one particular guy ‘Raffles’ who I associate as the same guy on the flyertalk forums, as well as associating with one sole frequent flyer. However I’ve come across a couple of posts in the past where you’ve referred to yourself as ‘we at headforpoints…’ (In referral to a competition I think), likewise with the ‘click our affiliate partners’ menu and the ‘About us’ menu there’s seems to be a disconnect especially when the about section actually gives the biography of one person.

So which one is it!? I quite like associating with one person that is running this site – makes it more personable but from the outset the points above don’t come across as consistent.

It is only me, any reference to we (unless it is a trip report) is just journo-speak

It’s good as it is. I’m fairly new.

What would be good to go a step further would be to create another page that shows you exactly what you need to do. Your advise is trusted so on this page no need to go into detail.

    So say I’m new,

Milestone 1 – get a free night stay
    Do this and this.

Milestone 2 – return flights to Europe for 2
    Do this OR do this

Milestone 3 – long haul economy from European airport

Milestone 4 – business class Europe

Milestone 5 – business long haul

    And so on.

Id pay a fee for monthly fee for learning how to achieve milestones guidance. I may not understand how and why it works but I’m really just interested in getting the flight or hotel.

Milestone 1 should be free then a small monthly recurring payment and it’s these serious monthly paid subscribers who should get the competition prizes and extra perks.

More obvious Avios University link please.

I like to review it each time I am making a redemption, but I can never find a direct link to the university index. I usually find my way there by going through Favourite Posts section or, if I’m looking for something particular like Aer Lingus redemptions, using the search bar.

But I think the series deserves a drop down menu of its own at the top of the page,

    Keep up the excellent work!

    • Rob says:

It is a separate category under ‘HFP by Category’ and they are all listed under ‘Favourites’ as well. If they had a separate tag then something else has to go, unless I put a sub menu under ‘Favourites’ (which is possible).

The one downside of those articles, by the way, is that is has compartmentalised a lot of knowledge. Every 18 months I update them but, outside that, I tend to ignore the topics in them. Many of the topics should be aired more frequently.

I think the site is great. I love the fact that all the posts are in the morning and can be read on my commute.

I love the site raffles, use it almost everyday.

I think (as others have already mentioned) the ability to replicate a route, for example the tier points run to Hawaii would be a great idea. ITA is a great tool, but I find it very confusing, if there was an easy way (Either a link to click through if possible, or he exact text to cut and paste into the ITA tool).

I would love to go to Hawaii and the thought of doing a points run on the way sounds great to me 🙂

I could screenshot the search I did to book my HNL run. Would that help? Not sure how to get it to you though…. :-/

      • Polly says:

Just please list your stops, that would suffice….think it’s great people share their comments and we all help each other out. I had already done the CX to GF to AB a while back, so had mentioned it way back. Very very useful. So we kept our silver. For in depth tier runs, FT is probably best, they really do spell it out. And you do usually have to include US mainland points to gain max TP, and of course fly LCY in and put of London. Plus always try to include a JFK and LAX run, en route to HNL. That DUB to HNL sale was such a steal

        • @mkcol says:

Polly – I’d booked in the ex-EU sale which is still running for booking until 23rd Jan if I recall correctly. Just need to remember the relevant travel dates too to get the right price.

My itin is a fairly straightforward DUB-LCY-JFK-LAX-HNL & back the same way. Fly out on a Thursday, overnight in LAX on the Thurs night, leave LAX early Friday morning & have 2 nights in HNL before leaving late on the Sunday evening & landing back to DUB Tuesday morning.

I seem to remember there were a couple of other EU departure points which had slightly higher fares & different travel dates too, so if DUB doesn’t work for you then try the others.

You’ll find me in Twitter with same username if you need to message me.

Thanks for that. I may have a look. Not that planning anything at the moment is really possible, it’s nice to know what’s available.

Sending my thoughts late as in Miami after a British Airways First Class flight (and it really was, including roses in the lavatories…..), thanks , in part to we all know who.
Raffles, after following and occasionally contributing for two years, I still get confused with the abbreviations, acronyms and so on, used by you inadvertently , I imagine, but by others too frequently.
Can’t be stopped, I know, but in your ‘ADD YOUR COMMENTS HERE’ which I am using in this reply, could you ‘ADD’ – PLEASE REPLY IN PLAIN ENGLISH … or some words to that effect?

Secondly, we often read of colleges accumulating hundreds of thousands of Avios annually ( a few mentions in the comments stream above). I find this interesting , so occasionally, in your ‘three a day’ (far better than the five the government advises), could you run a post about your own collection experiences or invite the sharing of ours and put this in to a separate category for archive?
I did share mine once, but at the back end of something perhaps unrelated.
It’s actually a lot like endorsements, but hopefully nothing like the annoying ones for everything on Miami Television.
    Happy New Year

    Excellent website!!

You concentrate a lot on Avios, understandably.

Not being an Avios collector, I am more interested in your other content.

Maybe create a more in-depth guide/section dedicated to other flight and hotel programmes?
