Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Open forum day …. any suggestions for tweaking the site?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

On January 1st last year I ran an ‘open forum’ where I opened up the comments to ideas on tweaking the site.  It worked well so I thought I would try it again.

I have continued to change various elements of the site here and there throughout 2014, although many were small changes which on their own don’t really get noticed.  I also added an Instagram site and there is a big overhaul of the daily emails ready to go which will be launched in the next couple of days.

In terms of content, it is now proving a lot easier to get companies to donate competition prizes to the site.  If you like what I have given away in 2014, you will be very impressed by what I have to offer during January.  There will be a big announcement on Saturday to kick off the year in style.

However, I am fully aware that there is an element of ‘snow blindness’ in what I do.  After all, I look at the site every day for a considerable period of time, and I can only second-guess how you, the readers, respond to the different elements.

As we start a new year, I’d like to open up the floor to any suggestions you have about the site. Remember that I need to cater for two audiences at the same time – the regular readers and the hundreds of people who come here via Google each day and who I want to convert into regular readers.

Is it clear to a newcomer what the site is about and why they should keep on reading it?

Are there too many menus at the top of the page? Too few?

Are there too many ads? (Probably not, most sites would run ads inside posts as well, which I don’t)

Are the sidebars too confusing? Should I push the social media links more?

Should there be more ‘sticky’ information for newcomers?

Does the mix of content – which veers from Tesco deals to airline deals to credit card sign-up offers – work for you?

Is the mix of news versus ‘reference / background’ articles (eg ‘How to use Combine My Avios with Iberia’) right?

Does the current format of running a fixed number of stories at fixed times every day – with a ‘lead’ story and two less important ones below – work for you?

If there is anything about the way the site currently looks that annoys or confuses you, or if you have any ideas for improvements, please post below. You can also email me at rob at headforpoints.com if you’d prefer.

Anything from your dislike of how I punctuate the headlines in the sidebars through to ideas for new ‘sticky’ pages are welcome – no idea is too small.  And, to be honest, small changes are easier to implement than large changes ….

Thank you, and a Happy New Year for 2015.

This is a great site which I view daily. I have enhanced my holiday/travel experiences immensely, and now have a new hobby in the points collection world. Thank You! I think the site is excellent. A couple of ideas as requested. As the travel industry is very much London centric perhaps a couple of pages dedicated to the regions in terms of ways to maximise points from the North, Scotland, Wales, Ireland. Also have you thought about a readers Q&A type page. People may have specific queries that other readers may be able answer from their own experiences to compliment your own knowledge. Eg if I plan to want to travel from x to y in a certain month many readers may have some good ideas/ solutions. Kind of a forum I suppose. Hopefully readers to this site will be sensible types so moderation would not be time consuming. How about readers reviews which would inevitably include how they used their points Etc. bearing in mind as travellers we will have time in airports, hotels etc and would be able to do so. Lastly in terms of freebies you may receive from companies, I think your current position of simply declaring same is the right thing to do when reviewing etc. thanks again a happy new year to all!

This! I am a loyal Irish reader for the last ~18 months or so. You have mentioned deals from Ireland over that time but any increase in this or how to maximize earning from here is appreciated!

My main frustration (which you can do little about!) is the lack of a rewards credit card here. There is literally not one! This seriously lowers my earning ability!

You could, I assume, get the Amex International Currency Card. This is billed in Euro and earns Membership Rewards points for conversion to BA, Virgin, Emirates, Hilton, SPG, etc etc.

        • kier says:

I have tried that but for some reason in Ireland Amex require a written guarantee from your bank saying they will pay off your bill if you refuse to. Not surprising banks aren’t too willing to do this. There are many frustrated posts on Irish money advice websites about this!

Happy New Year and keep up the great work. The format clearly works for me as this is the only blog I look at every morning without fail.

Re competitions – I don’t mind these, but see them as more of a bonus to what I come here for. Would be nice if these came in addition to the 3 posts a day, but I know that’s more pressure on you.

More family-orientated content as suggested above would be useful.

Love this site – its essential daily reading for anyone thats serious!

Please move up the categories section on the right to replace or displace the recent articles box. Anyone can access recent articles through the Home page etc…

Given the relative decline in standards of BA, it would be great to see more on other airlines be it one world or from other alliances.

    Thanks!

The ‘Recent Articles’ needs to stay where it is! When people come from Google they land on a specific article, not the home page. I need them to get a feel from that one page of what the site is about, and a list of the most recent articles does the job. The key is to get Google visitors to click on another page after they have read the article they originally came for.

Great site. The only thing I would like to see is a “Me too” link!

When there is a tier point run (e.g. Hawaii mentioned earlier) a way of booking it via click through ?

I never done one, but have heard that you have to phone through to a ba agent and some agents don’t understand etc. if an online click through is not possible, then a way of producing a script of exactly what you need to ask for.

I would like to see a the revival of one of my favourite threads from the greatly missed BMI forum on FT. ” Please report your successful redemptions using Diamond Club miles” Substitute Diamond Club for any FF programme miles/points. Maybe a weekly, fortnightly or monthly outlet where readers can share their redemption successes. I think this would be of benefit to new and old readers alike.

This is what I thought when reading the article – it would be great to have some success stories, at varying levels of cost, of what people have managed to achieve using the tips and tricks detailed on the site. I for one would find it quite inspirational.

Happy New Year to you and yours Rob and thanks for all you do – I’ve found the site so useful this year.

I like the fixed delivery time of the posts.
I wouldn’t feel cheated if there was only 2 or even 1 per day – quality over quantity works for me.

Echoing earlier comments – a good “how to” guide for things like booking using ITA Matrix & maximising miles/points on a booking would be great.

I’ve just booked a DUB-LCY-JFK-LAX-HNL round trip netting 1200 tier points but it sure did take a lot of head scratching to get it all correct.

    Happy New Year Rob!

Happy new year to you and your family Raffles.
BA reservations and Tesco customer services could do with reading this site, then they might understand how their products work 🙂
The site is fantastic, a Q&A section would be great, but Raffles is so good at replying to emails that he doesn’t need it just yet but maybe if the user base keeps on growing.

I would say tweaking the “current promotions” would be a nice change – if you could perhaps rank them in terms of value (based on your own ideas of what a point is worth as you’ve discussed on here previously) and for your own admin maybe automate their exclusion from a list once the expiry date has passed.

I think perhaps then adding a sticky “top 5 current promotions” to the main page may add some appeal to both new and old readers.

The daily content is hard to improve upon imho
