£100 cashback on £300 Amex Travel spend for Platinum cardholders

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

American Express Travel has launched a very decent bonus promotion for Platinum charge card holders who spend £300 or more at their website.

To qualify for the £100 rebate, you need to spend £300 or more on pre-paid hotels, plane tickets, car hire or experiences in one transaction before 26th February.

You MUST also register your Platinum card at this website before booking.  Only 6,600 registrations will be allowed.

This bonus is in addition to the standard bonus of 1 extra Membership Rewards point per £1 spent, on top of your base earnings.

This offer is probably best used for airline tickets or car hire.  Bookings hotels through American Express Travel runs the risk of it being treated as a third party booking and not qualifying for points or status credit – although you have a better chance of getting credit via Amex (because of their huge business travel booking business) than Expedia etc.  That said, for a £100 discount you may be willing to take the risk.

Note that hotel bookings via Fine Hotels & Resorts are specifically excluded, although this would be the case anyway as these bookings are never pre-paid.

If there is a chance that you might be spending £300 on flights or hotels before 26th February, I recommend that you register here just in case the 6,600 target registrations is hit.  Don’t bother trying if you don’t have a Platinum card as it will reject the registration.

PS.  The article I wrote for the American Express Travel site is still there, take a look if you missed it the first time.

  • Paul says:

The travel service told me yesterday that the deal applies only on line which seems sill. As others have said if you don’t get it call them they are generally very good at resolving things.

  • Michael says:

It is advertised when I log onto Amex Plat website, but when I try to enrol it says by invitation only. I called them up, and was told there was nothing they could do, it was targeted by their marketing department.

I did make use of the previous spend £150 get £50 back offer through foursquare, maybe that played a role?

    • Rob says:

Something is up, then, because if you see it when logged in at americanexpress.co.uk/platinum then it is clearly open to you!

      • Michael says:

I saw it on a splash screen when browsing the cardmember benefits a few days ago (yes, on americanexpress.co.uk/platinum). So it wasn’t under the ‘offers tailored for you’ section. The CS tried loading the offer for me, got the same message. Pity, I have loads of flights, car and hotel bookings to make for upcoming trips.

    • Alan says:

No, I’d taken part in that previous offer and registered for this one without a problem. Did it on a desktop machine rather than a phone/tablet though, not sure if that plays a role?

  • Ann says:

Does anyone have a platinum card that would like the points? I’d love to get £100 off a flight I need to book for my dad next week! London to Hong Kong return. We’d have to work something out offline, wiring the money etc. I would need the tickets brought today (18 Jan) though… !

  • Nigel says:

    Interesting call to Amex today
Sent a secure message but the (quick) answer back was irrelevant.

CS says “Only main Plat card holder gets the £100 off-Not any supps”
    Believable.

I then asked about the 10,000 MR points for every supp card.
I applied Dec so was asking when the points would be here.
Surprisingly he said “I am NOT ELIGIBLE as I have not held the card for more than 12 months.
    Not Believable.

He said that was part of the T&C’s-well I can’t see that.
I need to know for sure as I intend to close this card a.s.a.p and hopefully recoup the £450
every month delay cost me £40

I’ll send a message to CS about the 10,000 MR points to get whatever the answer is in writing.
If they answer the question correctly though…

Heas up to anyone who hasn’t got their points yet…

    • Louie says:

I can’t see anything to that effect in the T&Cs either. I think they are making it up as they go along….

    • Andy says:

Your correct it certainly doesn’t say that in the t&c’s. When I asked about my points they just said it takes up to 90 days. Hopefully it’s just an agent who got it wrong. Please keep us updated !

    • Nigel says:

      Update
“CS says “Only main Plat card holder gets the £100 off-Not any supps””
      Believable.

      Reply from message centre
I confirm that if you purchase……. for more than £300 each on the Cards ending in xxxxx and xxxxy, then you will receive two £100 statement credit for the two charges made on the Cards ending inxxxxx and xxxxy.

So-against my better judgement – I have booked 2 airline tickets (Mr + Mrs) on separate cards.
Lets see what happens to any credits.

Hopefully I can get the separate PNR’s to be joined so I don’t lose the wife…..

    • Scott Nelson says:

      Hi Nigel,

Keep us updated on this one. I’m very interested.

    • Nigel says:

Update re the 10,000 MR points

“I confirm that the Bonus Membership Rewards points will be applied to your account within 90 days from the date that the supplementary cards was approved. ”

So much for the CS on the phone….

  • Macca says:

Do you think applying for the Plat card would happen in time to take advantage of this deal? Reckon any of the 6600 registrations would be left by the time the card arrived?

    • Rob says:

You should be OK. The card will arrive within a week, there aren’t that many Platinum cardholders out there and – more importantly – this has not been promoted directly to cardholders. It is simply a rotating banner on the Platinum website.

  • Charlie says:

Thanks Raffles, just booked a week’s US car rental via Amex Travel, choosing a car at the sweet spot of just over £300, fingers crossed for the £100 statement credit.

  • C says:

There is one for centurion CM’s also

  • Dominik says:

I tried to enrol my Amex Gold out of curiousity and received an e-mail from Amex saying that I did so successfully… Has anyone else done the same? Do you think the credit will go through?

    • Ade says:

I was just about to book some flights when I saw this offer. I thought I may as well try and enroll my gold card and like you I was told I was successful. I went ahead and booked the flights but weirdly neither the initial transaction or credit have appeared on my statement. Usually after 6 days something would at least appear in pending transactions. Very odd!

      • Nigel says:

I’m in the same boat (plane).
Booked the flights-the charge did appear as “pending” for a few days -but now they’ve totally disappeared altogether.
My statement was made up a few days ago and nothing on there (not complaining).

Got the PNR for the lfights and the booking seems OK – so not unduly worried….
