British Airways expands pre-ordering of meals to more routes

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

On December 1st, British Airways started allowing the pre-ordering of main courses in World Traveller Plus, Club World and First.

This is NOT a version of the Singapore Airlines ‘Book the Cook‘ service. Singapore allows you to pick from a substantial range of meals – there are 20 different main courses available for a First Class passenger departing London, including lobster thermidor – so you know that you will be getting something you want.

With the new BA scheme, you can only choose from the standard menu for your flight.

The initial batch of routes was: Las Vegas (Heathrow departures), Phoenix, Rio de Janeiro, Vancouver, Dallas and Seattle.

The following routes will be added today, 1st February:

Sao Paulo

Buenos Aires

Mexico City

Houston

Austin

San Diego

The following routes will be added for departures from 1st March:

Atlanta

Denver

Boston

Philadelphia

Chicago

Baltimore

Toronto

Montreal

Calgary

You can book from 30 days before departure until check-in opens.  You should find an option to select your main course available via ‘Manage My Booking’ at ba.com.

Even if you are not keen on this scheme, you may want to do it anyway.  It is a logical conclusion that British Airways will now be able to reduce the number of spare meals loaded for other passengers who have not selected a meal, reducing the chances that they will be able to have their first choice.

What was the consensus on how this might hamper upgrade chances? Am booked in WT+ on a very busy flight to Austin next month…

  • Rob J says:

I have just logged into my booking for LHR-AUS on Wednesday next week and can’t see this option yet. We currently have Veggie meals selected as a special order – would I need to select a standard meal again 1st?

  • Nick says:

will selecting a meal in advance reduce your chances of being upgraded, I wonder?

  • flyforfun says:

There’s been chatter on FT where people in WT+ who had made meal selections of being upgraded. Given that the main meal choice in WT+ being the same, afaik, they should be able to allocate you one of the remaining dishes of that type.

Also, isn’t this facility only available for flight FROM London, not too?

  • Imbruce says:

Slightly off topic. Just looked at booking flights and hotel via BAEC long in it is £170 dearer than if I use the normal website and add all of my details during the booking. Has anyone else had this experience?
    Thanks

  • Rich says:

Interesting that NYC is not on the list….

  • Mark says:

I wonder if it would be easier (cheaper) for BA to load a few more meals of each type rather than setting up a pre-booking facility.

Having more meals of each type would give more passengers the chance to get their first choice and would prevent problems with upgrades or late menu changes.
