Get a 4-star hotel at Heathrow from £45 via an arbitrage

  My first choice is always Hilton Garden Inn (formerly Jury’s). Great hotel, perfect for watching the planes landing and usually a great price. But the main benefit is that it’s the only one beside an Underground station so you never need to worry about shuttle buses or taxis.

  I love your articles Raffles, and really look forward to your emails each day, but I feel impelled to amend your last sentence:

  …at the very worst, you might have your stay cancelled, your £45 refunded and have to pay out £100s at the last minute, because you can’t find anyone to take responsibility for walking you to another hotel (I’ve had exactly this series of events happen, and a recent poster on another blog had it happen when a property renovation was delayed, even though the hotel remained in the same chain, was booked through the chain website, and there were other properties from that chain in the vicinity). Definitely worth booking an award stay alongside it, just in case, for those taking the plunge.

    There is a difference here – the hotel remains under the same owners. It is only the sign that is changing.

  Mercure did this with the Comfort Inn in Nottingham a couple of years back. That was also the worst reviewed hotel in the city at the time. The renovation took almost a year to complete.before the scaffolding came down.

  Interesting, but not much of a location it should be said. (Add on travel costs and time hassle).

  The location is good for people with a car, perhaps, being close to the motorway, I think, but not for those arriving at Heathrow via public transport.

  Also, I was looking at the Accor site for hotels near Heathrow to take advantage of the 160 Euros offer (points for 3 stays) and the Mercure was showing on the Accor site for 44 pounds, cheaper than the Ibis in Bath Road. I would still take the Ibis, however, for convenience reasons.

  Had the misfortune to stay there about a decade ago. I thought it would be ok for a night. It wasn’t. It will be impossible to bring this hotel up to 4* even within the next year IMO. Best to spend £50odd on something you know you are getting, like HGI as suggested above.

    I struggle to see how they can sell the hotel as a four-star Mercure if the refurb is not finished …

      My guess is that refurb will take place on rolling basis. Those that book the £95 Mercure rate will likely be allocated the upgraded rooms while those that booked a £50ish room on another site will end up wishing they had stayed elsewhere.
