The Post Office is now accepting American Express

In one swoop, the Post Office has become the largest retail network in the UK to accept American Express cards.  As of last week, all 11,500 Post Office branches in the UK are accepting Amex for transactions for which they would previously have accepted a Mastercard or Visa.

At present, this only applies to transactions which you complete at a counter.  Self-service stamp printing machines will accept Amex from the end of the year but will take some time to convert them all.  It is also not yet possible to use American Express for online Post Office purchases.

To quote from the press release:

“We want to make it as easy as possible to access our services through longer opening hours and by offering the widest range of payment options. We have the largest presence of any retailer in the UK, and this move will help the 17 million customers who visit us each week. Accepting American Express Cards at all of our branches allows us to open the door to more customers giving them flexibility and choice when it comes to paying for goods or services.”

What is not clear is exactly what transactions can be done with a credit card at a Post Office.  It is obviously OK when buying stamps or stationery.  I assume that the One4All gift cards which you can buy at a Post Office are also included although these can be tricky to use.  It is no longer possible to buy a TV Licence at a Post Office so that knocks out one potential option.

My initial view is that this is less exciting than it first appears, but you never know.

I balked at the £2.50 fee to pay for my road tax… (DVLA’s charge, not the Post Office, apparently…)

    Postal Orders? Foreign currency?

  • uk_jm says:

tried to use my Amex last week for a passport check and send application. It was rejected!

  • Mr Bridge says:

of course the easiest way to buy books of stamps is to add them to your home shopping order been using amex to but stamps from tesco for a couple of years

  • JQ says:

To save money on stamps you should have bought them X years ago, or when WH Smith has an Amex offer. You can use them to pay for special delivery. Or buy them on ebay.

    Paying at the Post Office

Any Post Office in the country will accept payment for your council tax, however you must present your Post Office council tax payment card with your payment.

Payment cards are available free of charge from Wiltshire Council. Please contact your local Wiltshire Council office using the contact details on the left to request a payment card.To show the contact details for your area, please select your address using the post code checker.

Please have your council tax account number to hand when you contact us; our sample bill page can help you find your council tax account number

Once requested, it will take a minimum of two weeks for the new payment card to reach you in the post. You still have to pay your council tax by the dates shown on your bill while you are waiting for your new card. If it has not reached you in time to make a scheduled payment, please make alternative arrangements to pay the current instalment.

If you plan to pay at the Post Office, please pay at least 5 days in advance of the date shown on your bill to make sure your payment reaches us on time.

  • Andy says:

Parcelforce accept it online now too- noticed this last week. A most welcome change.

  • TJ says:

So, have we finally found a way to pay council tax on AMEX?!

That’s a few thousand pounds every year- not to be sniffed at!

    • Rob says:

      I very much doubt it!

    • Polly says:

Council tax can still be paid at pay point using amex at most co op stores, as discussed a few weeks ago. Either with a payment card you can request if your council does them, or they scan your original bill with the bar code.worth a try. Best way now is with the £50 paid Visa card you can buy with till spits. Takes the pain out of our bills.

      • James says:

I was working at a local coop whilst studying last year and served a couple of people who paid their council tax and TV licence via pay point with an Amex. As the payment goes through the coop till system I would imagine it would appear as supermarket spend as well, not 100% though. However the coop is split into several different regions and it would surprise me if acceptance of Amex in each region was different.

        • George says:

I think my council (Sutton) might have ringfenced itself from any form of credit card payments. Its council tax bills don’t have a barcode – I tried to pay at a Coop and they said they couldn’t do much as they couldn’t scan the bill. Paypoint is not listed as an acceptable way of payment on the back of the bill (trying to remember if Post Office does). Is anyone else on the same boat?

          • Polly says:

Have you asked your council if they supply a pay card. Our council sent one , as did Wiltshire as mentioned above

          • Jason says:

Try Santander bill pay and see if your council is on there.

          • Zoe says:

New Forest District Council seem to be similar. Very frustrating.

          • Tom H says:

George, I’m in Sutton as well. They accept credit cards online(not amex) in exchange for a fee.
You used to be able to pay via payzone(not paypoint) but I never found a shop wiling to take amex.
3v used to work, but not anymore, and GSI visa cards are treated as a credit card and attract the fee.

        • JB says:

My local co-op supermarket definitely doesn’t accept AmEx. Is it possible that the Paypoint machine in the co-op will take Amex for a council tax payment?

    • Globetrotter7 says:

Tried to pay my Council Tax at the post office in Wandworth but my Amex was declined… So was my IHG visa!

      • amex? says:

Try your local PayPoint @ Co-Op, worked for me & others today old bean
