Finnair launches ‘Hand Baggage Only’ fares – but elites CAN take a free case

Finnair announced yesterday that it is launching its equivalent of a British Airways ‘Hand Baggage Only’ fare, called ‘Light’, on routes from London, Manchester and Dublin to Helsinki.

It will also be introduced on all other European and Middle East routes except those to Russia.  It will offer a typical £20-£22 saving on a return economy flight from the UK if you decide not to check in a case.

Finnair will still respect your elite benefits – unlike BA.  Whilst British Airways has torn up the oneworld rules and does not allow elite members to take a free bag on a Hand Baggage Only fare, Finnair WILL do this.  If you have a BA Gold or Silver card, you can book a Hand Baggage Only ticket and still check in one case free of charge.

PS.  Until the end of April, Finnair is offering a very aggressive £899 business class fare from London to Chongqing in China.  This is a decent stopping off point for Hong Kong and other destinations in China.  You need to travel before the end of June.  More details here.

  • PGW says:

Just tried to use this code on a £80 stay next week and received a message that the amount was under the minimum required for it. No indication what the minimum is though.

    • John G says:

Usually with these they have £100 minimum.
Good thing about LM codes is that they usually work at chain hotels unlike Expedia etc.

    • Rob says:

      Updated, thanks.

  • Geoggy says:

We is it just me that’s realised 24th April is a Friday?

It was wrong in the email I got from them too

So I assume this offer is good not just until 20 this morning?

    • Head for Points says:

No, it is fine until 10am tomorrow according to the PR email I got!

  • noirxpress says:

The extensive exclusions list is probably worth noting. Read into it after finding it wouldn’t work for the CP LHR.

  • Oh! Matron! says:

Just booked T5 Sofitel for the 30th April

It’s well above £200 for the same day via normal methods, but, with the secret escapes and SPRING10, now down to £109 for me!

    What’s the restaurant like?

  • Iberia says:

Iberia HBO fares (Basica fare) also allow elites to carry a bag

  • James67 says:

My dad just informed me there is £20 statement credit for two (seems like a new ploy) separate £50 spends at Debenhams on his amex PRG. Just checked, it is not yet on cardmemberofferx but perhaps a bunch of new offers coming soon.
