Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Supercard from Travelex is now available – the end of FX credit card charges?

Back in March I wrote about the forthcoming launch of Supercard from Travelex.  It is very rare that a totally revolutionary payment product comes along but this could be it.

As you (hopefully) know, almost all UK credit, debit and charge cards add a 3% fee when you buy something abroad.

There are only a handful of cards which waive this fee.  There are a few free options, such as the Post Office Platinum and Halifax Clarity. There is only one credit card in the UK which offers reward points and no FX fees and that is the Lloyds Avios Rewards card (review here). You need to pay a £24 annual fee for that.

Supercard

Supercard is different. It can be used anywhere where a Visa card is accepted. Your purchase is translated into Sterling as the standard Visa / MasterCard rate and charged to any UK credit or debit card you nominate. You will receive the usual rewards from that card.

Let’s imagine spending $150 in New York. If you use your Marriott MasterCard, you would be charged £103 based on a $1.50 exchange rate. Use Supercard – with your Marriott card linked to it – and your Marriott card would be charged just £100.

Supercard does away with the need to keep a separate credit card just for overseas purchases. You would earn reward points on every overseas purchase (assuming you linked a rewards credit card!), you would have spare credit available – by cancelling your Post Office or Halifax card – to apply for another rewards card and you would have one less bill to manage each month.

Back in March you could pre-register your interest via the Supercard website.  I did that, but have not received notification yet.

However, as an eagle-eyed reader spotted, the app is now available to downloadThe links to the iOS and Android apps are on this page.  It is not in the iOS app store yet – you need to follow the link.

As of 11pm last night, when I wrote this, it was misbehaving and would not let me register.  The reader who sent me the link had been able to register OK.

Only a limited number of registrations are being taken at the moment so act sooner rather than later if you want to be in the first wave and get the card in time for your next foreign trip.

For some years the best overseas card has unquestionably been the N&P debit card with no fees or loading on cash or purchases. I have no plans to give that up until I see exactly how supercard works for cash but it is certainly great news for purchases.

  • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

Just managed to register successfully now. Crazy that they’re doing an email broadcast when their servers are struggling.

  • Nick says:

I downloaded app. Was just asked for email and phone number. Plus 3 profile questions (eg how often u travel etc) and then I hit the submit button

Was not even asked for full name???

Then got an email to say card won’t be sent out to me just yet??

Really frustrated at not getting one of these due to poor IT. There is no point taking ‘interest’ emails and then basically lining everyone up at the starting line again for it all to keel over. Am I right in thinking all the iOS registrations seem to have keeled over and Android have gone through?

I started trying at 8:40 – as soon as I saw the email and then it just failed repeatedly on the final step. What a rubbish start.

  • Singing Dwarf says:

You’re a bit late on this one @Raffles – the app was available in Google Play Store on election night for a few hours! Those in the know, hopped in quick and registered, before it was pulled!

@SupercardUK Twitter have stated that anyone who registered then, will have their registrations honored. However they have earlier said that only those people who pre-registered via their website are likely to get a card during the limited pilot.

  • Modern Day Sinbad says:

Ha! I twitted them last night asking for an update! I should have checked the App Store instead.

  • James67 says:

Got the app installed ok. When registering it took my email address but when I hit ‘next’ it displayed a message “Thanks for registering your interest…”. Now it will not let me do anything else. Usually I’m on HfP at 6am when I’m at home; off all the days to leave email and HfP until later!

  • Cheshire Pete says:

What a bizarre experience! As mentioned above I failed to complete registration earlier this morning, then after multiple failed attempts I received the official email inviting me at around 08:19. So, I tried one more time, but I noticed they started my email address with a Capital letter. Thinking perhaps as I was pre-registered they may do some simple matching of emails I re did the registration using a Capital letter to match what they have on record, and first time of trying to register again it came back with the Congratulations message and saying my Supercard was in the post!

Anyhow, the above may just be a fluke, and I might still get an email telling me I’m not really getting one! So, that is my experience so far anyhow. Will update if any emails arrive confirming or denying my card is going to be sent out!

    • Cheshire Pete says:

And to confirm I got this a few minutes ago:

      “Hello,
Thanks for signing up for Supercard. We’re delighted to have you on board.

We’ll be popping your personal Supercard in the mail – expect it through your letterbox shortly (you won’t need to be at home to sign for it).
