News in brief:

Accor launches ‘up to 40% off’ Summer sale

Accor, the Novotel / Sofitel / Mercure / Ibis etc group, has launched a Summer sale with quoted discounts of up to 40%.

It covers the entire Summer, valid for stays until August 30th.  Whilst all sale rates must be pre-paid, you can book until August 28th so you could wait until late if you were sure rooms would still be available.

Rooms also come with up to 600 bonus Le Club Accorhotels points, depending on brand, which are worth 2 Eurocents each when redeemed for Accor stays.  The sale covers 1,500 hotels across the UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland and Luxembourg.

Full details can be found at the sale website here.

Another American Airlines ‘buy miles’ offer

American Airlines has launched another ‘buy miles’ promotion.  This one is at the better end of recent offers.

Because of the odd way the bonus is allocated, the cheapest deal is actually buying 76,000 miles, with a 27,500 miles bonus, for $2,079 includes the tax and processing fee.  That is exactly 2 cents per mile.

I have run a number of articles recently on the pros and cons of using American miles so I won’t repeat them.  I touched on some in this article on the current ‘15,000 miles for getting the free AA credit card’ offer.

The deal is confusing as you receive both a miles bonus and a 15% discount on the standard price.

This offer closes on July 13th so you only have a couple of days to take part.  The AA ‘buy miles’ page is here.

Shangri La Shard

Double points with Shangri-La Golden Circle

Shangri-La Golden Circle is celebrating its fifth birthday with a number of offers.

One of them is very attractive – stay at five different hotels and collect 5,000 bonus points.  That would get you $500 of food and drink vouchers.

Staying at five different Shangri-La hotels is virtually impossible if you are only travelling around Europe.  If you have a trip to Asia planned before the end of September, though, this could work out very well.  Pick the right properties and you might not spend much more than $500.  You can redeem the vouchers back in the UK for meals at the Shangri-La hotel in The Shard in London.

Another offer is for double points on all stays which may have wider appeal.  You can find out more on the Shangri-La website here – note that registration is required.

Accor sale discount is 5-10% at best (big cities).

Hotels are clearly near full and not selling the last rooms cheaply (until dumping them on the very last moment perhaps).

  • Steve says:

For some bookings you can get better rates at Mercure and Novotel doing a general booking, rather then through the Summer Dreams page. Mercure “Sweet Escape” and Novotel “Perfect Break” both offer (up to) 40%, with ‘room only’ and ‘breakfast included’ options. There is also an extra 10% “OnlyOn” discount for Le Club Accorhotels members when booking UK hotels.

  • Evan says:

Recently used 260k AA miles to fly the wife and I LHR-CDG (BA) CDG-HKG (CX F) and then SIN-AUH-LHR (EY J). 2 week cruise form HK to Singapore over the holidays this year. Phone agent was super helpful (as I’ve always found with AA). I think that’s the same price as a return from LHR – LAX in J with Avios!

  • Joe says:

Tempted to jump on the AA offer. $2k for 103.5k miles can essentially get you a return to the Middle East in first. If revenue fares were offered at this price, I’d probably bite.

    • Joe says:

Actually it’s not even $2k if you want to do LON-AUH-LON – it’s 80k miles so you’d need to buy 61k + 20k bonus for $1,529 pre tax. Seems like a no brainer to me.

[…] +1. You may well be better off buying AA miles, either for the whole redemption or one-way. See here for info on the current AA buy miles offer and their credit card sign-up bonus: https://headforpoints.com/2015/07…-circle-offer/ […]
