Review: the art deco Hotel Reichshof, Hamburg

This is my review of the relaunched art deco Hotel Reichshof in Hamburg, part of the Curio Collection by Hilton.

I wrote about Hilton’s new Curio Collection back in May.  They are copying Marriott’s successful Autograph chain, persuading independent hotels to become part of the Hilton marketing system whilst retaining their independence.

The Reichshof hotel only opened two weeks ago.  I was probably one of the first 100 people to stay when I was there 12 days ago.  At €47 plus 12,000 Hilton HHonors points for a ‘cash and points’ redemption, it was good value.

This is what you need to know about the Reichshof:

  • it looks fantastic
  • it is a bit of a disaster area at the moment

This was not a surprise.  The pressure to open a hotel before it is fully ready is obviously huge.  The pressure is even higher when the building fabric is ready but the soft stuff is not.  Let’s start with the good stuff.

Reichshof is situated directly outside the northern entrance to the main railway station.  You can jump off the S1 train from the airport and be in the hotel in around 3 minutes if you know the way.  Luckily it is offset slightly from the station entrance so you do not see the, ahem, ‘interesting’ characters who inhabit the area day and night.  The upside is that if you want KFC at 2am you don’t have far to go.

Here are some pictures of the lobby, restaurant and bar.  A huge amount of money has been spent refurbishing what was previously a dowdy Maritim hotel.

Following current hotel trends, the Reichshof has a small lobby shop where you can get a takeaway coffee, newspaper or drink:

This astonishing wood pannelling can be found in the Reichshof hotel restaurant, where they also serve breakfast.  This was taken during dinner, with a lot of curious locals already keeping it busy.  As a Hilton Gold, breakfast is free.

This is part of the main bar and dates back to the original hotel.  The small casino has been replaced by a pool table.

A tribute to the founder himself:

It looks great, doesn’t it?

And it is.

If you can book yourself in for a stay in a few months time at the ‘cash and points’ rate of €47 plus 12,000 points, you’ll be getting a good deal.  Checking out the Hamburg Christmas markets in December and then retiring to the cosy wood pannelled bar is very appealing.

In Part 2 of this review, though, I explain why you shouldn’t stay there at the moment.

You can find our more about the hotel, and book, on this page of the Hilton website.

Looks very attractive. Curious to hear what issues you had during your stay. Hope you still enjoyed the trip, is there a lot to do in Hamburg?

I spotted on the Curio site that a property in London is expected Q2 next year. I believe it will be a new build around Canary Wharf area, part of a development called Lincoln Plaza. Interesting because all the Curios so far are existing properties (I believe) so can’t imagine a new property in CW having bags of character. Anyway we shall see and will most likely be my first taste of the Curio brand.

    • Mike says:

Living next door to where the London Curio is planned (and is nearly finished), I think it’ll end up being a Doubletree or something else. It doesn’t seem to fit into the Curio design. Like the nearby Novotel that was a Crowne Plaza when it went through planning.

Miniatur Wunderland is worth a visit, might go over there again with the little one if I can get in this hotel at a good price like that!

      • Rob says:

Let me tell you about that!

It was recommended to us, so we went last Saturday. Big mistake. 55 minute queue to get in, so we bailed. (That said, my parents-in-law went and loved it, so it must be OK.)

We went on a boat tour instead, they set off from very close to Wonderland. As it was low tide, the boat couldn’t go into the city so we went out into the harbour and did a full tour of the port and the shipyards. Very interesting (if you like that sort of thing). My wife is a shipping banker so she was very happy!

        • Nick Burch says:

Instead of a boat tour, you can also be a cheapskate and take the #64 ferry along the Elbe, nice park at the end and good views, plus normal public transport tickets apply. Can be long queues to get on in the summer though!

        • Tariq says:

Definitely worth a visit next time you are in town. I think it was winter time when we visited so no queues, but still a popular attraction. The Miniatur Airport is great with model planes taking off and landing on a loop! I think we stayed in the Radisson by the conference centre, which was the first time we encountered a window between the bathroom and bedroom and which we found very odd!

          • YL says:

            I also recommend Miniatur Wunderland.

We re adults and we loved it, especially the Miniatur Airport is definitely the highlight.
We booked the advance tickets on their website, so the queues to get in were minimum.

    • Rob says:

Hamburg is very pleasant – a wealthy city built around a lake, like Geneva, but with a massive harbour as well. No real stand-out tourist attractions but a pleasant spot to wander.

Note that EVERYTHING is shut on Sundays, of course, except museums and restaurants.

  • Joachim says:

Just stayed two nights there. It’s impressive, I felt very much like in 1930. Staff was very friendly, however some processes were not running as expected. I was dissapointed by the fact the Spa Area was not open. Which was not mentioned during booking.
Would also recommend a stay, but surely not before they fixed all issues.
