Bits: £50 off £500 at Apple with Amex, 10% off Emirates flights, paid mystery shopper stays

News in brief:

£50 Apple cashback deal with Amex

American Express is repeating an Apple promotion which originally ran last year, offering £50 statement credit on a purchase of £500 or more.

I was originally sceptical about this because the key Apple lines are all due for replacement in September and this offer closes on September 10th.

As reader Joel reminded me, though, you could buy £500 of Apple gift vouchers.  Keep those on one side and you’ll be well placed to order a new iPhone or iPad when the 2016 ranges launch next month.

You can register for the offer here.  It is restricted to 5,000 people but it had not reached that limit at 3am today when I tested it.

10% off Emirates flights for O2 Priority members

If you have an O2 mobile contract, you can get 10% off an Emirates flight, departing from any of their UK airports, if you book before 31st August.

(If you are not an O2 customer, you could save a few pounds by getting a SIM and registering it – or ask a friend to trigger the code for you.)

The 10% discount applies to both business and economy tickets.  However, it does NOT apply to the taxes element of the fare so, in economy, the discount will be noticeably lower than 10%.

The special Emirates booking page is here – note that you MUST use the desktop site.  You will need to trigger a promotional code from the O2 Priority site here.  Thanks to everyone who sent this over.

Get paid on your hotel stays with Trivago’s mystery shopper programme

I recently wrote about the recruitment programme for 25 mystery shoppers by Small Luxury Hotels of the World.

Reader Colin pointed me in the direction of a smaller scale scheme open to anyone (he has done it himself) run by hotel booking site Trivago.

Register with them via this website and you will receive a decent sized cash payment (essentially, a rebate on the price you paid for the room) once you have booked and stayed at a hotel in certain focus cities.

You will need to complete a Q&A on the hotel – Colin said the one he did took about 30 minutes and he was paid £50.  This was for an Edinburgh hotel.

More details can be found here.

Anyone had any experience if it works if you haven’t received the email invitation?

    • David Butcher says:

It has allowed me to register two cards against one email so I am assuming I can use both and get the cash back on both. This has been the case in the past

    • Rob says:

Apple deal? If you can register, it works.

  • dan says:

“As reader Joel reminded me, though, you could buy £500 of Apple gift vouchers”

Huh? Raffles, you are the first person who advises to buy gift vouchers when these sorts of Amex deals arise!

    Did you really need reminding??

    • Rob says:

I did on this one, yes, but I am on holiday and accepting / rejecting ideas on the fly without the usual consideration!

  • Ian says:

So, I just tried to sign up again with the same card to see what the message would be and I got this:

Oops, Our Records Show That Youve Already Enrolled In This Offer. We Limit The Number Of Times That A Cardmember Can Enroll In Each Offer.

  • Rob says:

I saw that comment, although Joel did get the email in first 🙂 Stuff is sitting around pre-written at the moment.

  • Morgan says:

After I saw the HFP email this morning I logged on to Amex at ~0630 to check my Offers – sadly nada. Didn’t receive any Amex email offer either.

  • CV3V says:

It’s just a rerun of last years Amex/Apple promo and the same tactics just before new iphones are launched. Nothing new. Its been on HDUK for a couple of days.

  • CV3V says:

Apple deal finishes on Thursday 10 September, so i guess the new iphones will be available for preorder on Friday 11th September. (i think that’s how it played out last year)

    • CV3V says:

For all the travellers to KUL I would point out that Apple products are MUCH cheaper there, especially given how much the ringgit has fallen the last few months (and last 2 days). Apple stuff is about 30% cheaper there and comes with a worldwide guarantee, only issue is Malaysia is not in the priority list for new product launches.

  • jeff says:

Any concerns here regarding the supposed £50 of £500 Apple deal? I note on HUKD some concerns have been raised regarding its legitimacy…coupled with the fact that no-one appears as yet to have confirmed it actually works (i.e. receive a credit confirmation notification post purchase or the actual £50 credit arriving)

I’m not overly concerned myself, just mentioning what others are…

    • Rob says:

Totally legit, I got it emailed to me directly. Offer ran last year as well.

      • jeff says:

Thanks Rob. Have you purchased a £500 gift card yet…..and if so, did you receive a confirmation email regarding the corresponding promo credit?

        • Rob says:

I didn’t, as I’m away, and I’m not planning to as it doesn’t work for me, for various reasons.
