A potentially very good IHG Accelerate hotel promotion, especially for new members

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

IHG Rewards Club, the Holiday Inn, HI Express, Crowne Plaza, InterContinental etc loyalty scheme, has launched its new Autumn promotion – IHG Accelerate.

Unlike the fairly lacklustre offerings from Hilton HHonors and Marriott Rewards which I wrote about here and here last week, the IHG one does offer genuine value.  At least, it does for me.  Your own personal target may differ.

In addition, it offers a VERY good deal for new members of IHG Rewards Club should you or your travelling partner not already be a member.

Here are the headline details:

IHG Accelerate covers stays from September 1st to December 31st

All hotels are participating

Your bonus is personalised – you need to log in here to discover yours – but will be worth at least 50,000 IHG Rewards Club points (which I value at £250)

This was my target for 87,800 points maximum, comprising:

  • 5,000 points on my next stay
  • 7,200 points for completing four nights
  • 19,200 points for staying at two different brands
  • 9,600 points for staying at two Holiday Inn hotels
  • 4,800 points for booking two stays with the IHG app
  • 15,000 points for spending two consecutive weekend nights at an InterContinental
  • 27,000 points for hitting five of the above targets

I consider this very, very do-able – probably with stays I need to do anyway.  That would be (87,800 points x my £5 per 1000 valuation) £440 of free future stays.

My wife got this for 50,000 points maximum, comprising:

  • 5,000 points on my next stay
  • 6,800 points for completing five nights
  • 2,000 points for booking a Bonus Points package
  • 500 points for spending $50 on food and drink whilst at a hotel
  • 4,800 points for booking two stays with the IHG app
  • 2,000 points for applying for the IHG Premium Visa
  • 33,700 points for hitting five of the above targets

I don’t like this.  She had the Visa but cancelled it this year, and even if she got it again it would represent a £99 investment due to the fee, admittedly offset by the sign-up bonus.  Having to run up food and drink spend in a hotel and book a Bonus Points package both require spending which may not otherwise be needed.

That said, if I can steer her into doing one IHG stay for work then it would be an easy 5,000 points for hitting the first of her targets.

Not already an IHG Rewards Club member?  You’re in luck.

If you are not already an IHG Rewards Club member, you will receive a special offer when you sign up via the link on this page.

One free night voucher for completing two paid stays (any brand, any length)

A second free night voucher for completing four paid stays (any brand, any length)

This could work out very nicely.  The free night vouchers are valid wherever a standard reward night is shown as available.

You could make a substantial saving by doing four stays at a very cheap Holiday Inn Express – perhaps booking and checking in (but not necessarily staying) for the dead days around Christmas – and then using your two free nights at a £250+ per night InterContinental in New York, Paris, Hong Kong, London etc next year.

Before you get any ideas, I should stress that IHG is very good at picking up duplicate accounts.  They appear to cross reference lots of data, including the credit card used to pay for stays.  However, if your travelling partner is not an IHG Rewards Club member then this would be a good chance to sign them up.

Conclusion

As long as your target is sensible, this is probably the most generous hotel promotion you are likely to see this Autumn.  There is an Accor promotion coming down the line which may be better if your IHG target is unreasonable.

Log in to the Accelerate website here and see what your target is.

Joined prior to a stay in June. Just checked my offer. 58k.

5k for 1 night in September.
    5k for any 1 night.
    6k after 3 nights
Additional 3k for every three nights (x4) so 15nights in total.
    30k for completing 18 nights.

    • Globetrotter7 says:

My other half has exactly the same offer for 58k points. All stays, nothing complicated like mine which, for 50k points, requires booking 3 stays using cash + points, staying at 2 Crowne Plazas, staying 5 nights, a weekend stay and paying with my IHG Visa card. Not sure I’m gona achieve this lol

    • Modern Day Sinbad says:

I got the same offer but haven’t stayed in an IHG hotel for a very long time. I’ve got a multi-city itinerary in Sep/Oct so might take advantage of this then.

    • Will says:

my wife has this offer. not amazing but free 10k points for staying in september which we need and maybe worth 6k for 2 more nights

18 nights isnt going to happen!

  • SydneySwan says:

    I have quite a reasonable offer;
(a). Stay once get 1000 points
    (b). Stay 4 nights get 8000 points.
(c). Spend $56 on f&b at ING hotels for 800 points.
Bonus 40,200 for completing the lot. Unfortunately no travel planned until January!

  • Britbronco22 says:

I have 5.4k for booking 2 stays with the app and 4.8k for booking 3 points and cash nights. This is pretty annoying as I don’t think it’s possible to hook points and cash on the app!?

I have a 5 night stay in October already booked. I don’t want to take out the credit card. Not a great offer for me

    • Rob says:

2k for getting the credit card, which involves a £99 non-refundable fee (albeit you get 20k points as a bonus) seems very tight to me.

      • trickster says:

My wife has been offered 2k for applying for the standard Visa – much better deal.

Do you know what their approach is on household income, as she is a stay at home mum?

        • Liz says:

I got the IHG back in March in my name with my husband as a supplementary cardholder and I don’t work – no income so she should be ok – credit of £8000 given too !

  • Ian says:

Not elegible based on my current earning preference?

  • Aliks says:

I guess I was too successful with the previous bonus schemes:

    5000 for Sep bonus
    5000 for stay once
    9200 for stay 7 nights
Then the rest of the bonuses are 3000 for 3 nights up to a final
    30000 after night 22

    Ouch

    • Chris says:

I have the same except it starts at 14 nights for 16k then 3 nights/3k increments up to 29 nights.

I’ve done just over that this year in total so who knows how they work it out. I achieved both big wins and into the nights but only accrued about 12k in points from SYS at the start of the year.

My IHG stays have fell off a cliff this year as the spring promo was unachievable and there was no summer promo.

Accor’s 3x 2 nighters and Hilton’s double/triple points looks more appealing based on what they have offered me so far.

I’ll wait for the initial press release and then I’ll complain to corporate direct if the press release churns out the usual “Based on recent history” line. It won’t make the slightest difference of course but it’s far better than voicing your displeasure at some poor man or woman in Manila who are powerless

  • AviosNewbie says:

thanks Raffles! signed up my wife for IHG now.

quick question: If I have a 2 night stay coming up, can I book each night separately, and will that count as 2 ‘Stays’ for the purposes of getting the free night certificate?

    • Rob says:

Only if one night is in your name on your account and one night hers (and you make the hotel process a check out after the first night). This gets you 1 stay each.

Otherwise IHG merges them together. Even if the hotel processes each night separately, IHG Rewards Club spots in and merges the stays.
