Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

A potentially very good IHG Accelerate hotel promotion, especially for new members

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

IHG Rewards Club, the Holiday Inn, HI Express, Crowne Plaza, InterContinental etc loyalty scheme, has launched its new Autumn promotion – IHG Accelerate.

Unlike the fairly lacklustre offerings from Hilton HHonors and Marriott Rewards which I wrote about here and here last week, the IHG one does offer genuine value.  At least, it does for me.  Your own personal target may differ.

In addition, it offers a VERY good deal for new members of IHG Rewards Club should you or your travelling partner not already be a member.

Here are the headline details:

IHG Accelerate covers stays from September 1st to December 31st

All hotels are participating

Your bonus is personalised – you need to log in here to discover yours – but will be worth at least 50,000 IHG Rewards Club points (which I value at £250)

This was my target for 87,800 points maximum, comprising:

  • 5,000 points on my next stay
  • 7,200 points for completing four nights
  • 19,200 points for staying at two different brands
  • 9,600 points for staying at two Holiday Inn hotels
  • 4,800 points for booking two stays with the IHG app
  • 15,000 points for spending two consecutive weekend nights at an InterContinental
  • 27,000 points for hitting five of the above targets

I consider this very, very do-able – probably with stays I need to do anyway.  That would be (87,800 points x my £5 per 1000 valuation) £440 of free future stays.

My wife got this for 50,000 points maximum, comprising:

  • 5,000 points on my next stay
  • 6,800 points for completing five nights
  • 2,000 points for booking a Bonus Points package
  • 500 points for spending $50 on food and drink whilst at a hotel
  • 4,800 points for booking two stays with the IHG app
  • 2,000 points for applying for the IHG Premium Visa
  • 33,700 points for hitting five of the above targets

I don’t like this.  She had the Visa but cancelled it this year, and even if she got it again it would represent a £99 investment due to the fee, admittedly offset by the sign-up bonus.  Having to run up food and drink spend in a hotel and book a Bonus Points package both require spending which may not otherwise be needed.

That said, if I can steer her into doing one IHG stay for work then it would be an easy 5,000 points for hitting the first of her targets.

Not already an IHG Rewards Club member?  You’re in luck.

If you are not already an IHG Rewards Club member, you will receive a special offer when you sign up via the link on this page.

One free night voucher for completing two paid stays (any brand, any length)

A second free night voucher for completing four paid stays (any brand, any length)

This could work out very nicely.  The free night vouchers are valid wherever a standard reward night is shown as available.

You could make a substantial saving by doing four stays at a very cheap Holiday Inn Express – perhaps booking and checking in (but not necessarily staying) for the dead days around Christmas – and then using your two free nights at a £250+ per night InterContinental in New York, Paris, Hong Kong, London etc next year.

Before you get any ideas, I should stress that IHG is very good at picking up duplicate accounts.  They appear to cross reference lots of data, including the credit card used to pay for stays.  However, if your travelling partner is not an IHG Rewards Club member then this would be a good chance to sign them up.

Conclusion

As long as your target is sensible, this is probably the most generous hotel promotion you are likely to see this Autumn.  There is an Accor promotion coming down the line which may be better if your IHG target is unreasonable.

Log in to the Accelerate website here and see what your target is.

  • AndyS says:

    All I get is
2 nights for a free night
2 more nights for another free night

I’ve got three future bookings already – will they count ?

    • Kevin says:

as long as they are after the 1st September then yes

      • Rob says:

You mean ‘nights’ and not ‘stays’? If it is ‘nights’ you’ve got a good result as you could do a mattress run somewhere cheap with just one check in.

        • Jen T says:

Nights is the headline but it’s stays (assuming it’s the same as my target). “Stay twice and get a Free Night.”

          • AndyS says:

Yes that’s right, I managed to log in and it does say “stays”. Sorry for any confusion

        • AndyS says:

Pretty sure it said nights, can’t easily check. Sorry what’s a mattress run?
          Thanks for the info.

          • Rob says:

Checking in to the hotel but then immediately leaving, possibly ruffling up the bedsheets and stealing the tea bags first!

          • AndyS says:

Ha, never thought of doing that! Bit expensive for a few teabags but if it gets to the next level I guess its worth it!

  • Waribai says:

Just from a mattress point of view, what are he cheapest IHG properties in the UK?

    • Chris says:

In the North HI Haydock and HIX Metro Centre can at times be very cheap. Haydock in particular in the dead of winter on a Friday and Saturday when there is no race meeting on. I had rooms at both during last years promo for under £40!

In Scotland I’ve got a couple of rooms booked at £27 a night between Christmas and New Year at HIX Glasgow Riverside and a couple of the Aberdeen hotels on a Friday and Saturday night are £44 advance or £49 flexible with 5k points year round.

    • whiskerxx says:

The cheapest I’ve found so far is HIX Bradford. Using the discounted rate its £24.80 for a Sunday night in November

      • Kathy says:

You do actually have to physically check-in for a mattress run, though, don’t you? You can’t book and then not turn up.

        • Rob says:

          Correct.

        • Phil says:

I know this is the rule, but wonder why they insist you stay? surely it could be much more extra revenue for them if they allowed mattress runs without someone needed to show up?

If it is linked to hotel overbooking and capacity, perhaps have a check box on booing saying this is a mattress run and do not count in your capacity calculations.

          • Rob says:

If you don’t stay, the hotel isn’t making any money from the bar or restaurant from you. More importantly (from a chain perspective) all of the money would flood to cheap hotels in China which would mean other hotels losing out.

    • Waribai says:

Thanks, I might stick with HI Heathrow Ariel then which is much nearer home!

  • Mark says:

    12,000 Your Achievement Bonus

Thought mine was quite poor to be honest!
Also I do not have a corporate account or know anyone that does!

  • Simmo says:

    Mine seems quite reasonable.
Platinum (through credit card) – 12 nights last year (mixture of paid and points).

    Stay Once Get 5,000
    Stay 7 night(s) Get 9,200
    Book 2 stay(s) with the IHG® App Get 3,200
Stay with us for the weekend and earn 4,000 bonus points
Earn 3,600 bonus points when you book 3 stay(s) using Points and Cash
Book and pay on IHG Card Get 1,500

Complete 5 of 6 offers Get 23,000 bonus

I make that 3 stays (2 x 1 night + 1 x 2 night over a weekend) as long as I can find a cash + points rate and any spend on the IHG card triggers it.

  • Andrew says:

For new members, if we book using the Family and Friends code, would they count as qualifying stays?

    • Rob says:

Absolutely not – they never count, and the hotels never make a mistake with these for some reason!

  • Janeyferr says:

Similarly reasonable. I’m Gold with a spattering of HI/HIX bookings from the past year that were mainly to earn points during promotions that I’m using to stay at ICs for 5 nights at the end of sept:

Stay once and earn 5,000 bonus points.
Stay 7 night(s) and earn 11,600 bonus points.
Book 2 stay(s) with the IHG® App and earn 2,600 bonus points.
Stay with us for the weekend and earn 4,000 bonus points.
Book and pay for your next getaway at an IHG hotel using your IHG® Rewards Club Visa® card and earn 1,500 bonus points
Complete 4 of 5 offers and earn (an additional) 25,300 bonus points

Only problem being that I’ve been stopped from driving for medical reasons so can’t utilise those cheap roadside locations.

  • Bobbt says:

do reward nights count? I have a 5k points break stay at HI T5.

  • PE says:

    Hey Raffles,

do you know how the ‘Free Night’ availability is? (For this + Ambassador bonus potentially)

We’ve booked the Viking Deal to New York over New Years Eve. Any chance to get a good hotel deal at those crazy NYC prices? Otherwise it’s going to be AirBnB 😉

    Thanks!

    • Rob says:

With the last promo, the free nights came from standard reward availability. The InterContinental in Times Square still has reward nights for New Years Eve, as long as you stay 2+ nights. Cash is $780 per night including tax!

      • PE says:

Thanks a lot for your reply! 🙂

Checking that right now. Would it be possible to book 2 nights of which 1 is with free voucher and 1 with points? (same goes for more nights)

Or using both free nights in 1 stay? e.g. 6 nights = 2 free vouchers + 4 nights with points

There’s a 50% bonus points offer right now. Not as good as some weeks ago the 100% but better than nothing 😉

        • PE says:

Ok, now discovered your Book&cancel trick which gives 70% extra.
The Times Square Staybridge are in for 35k redemption. Gives us for 6 days an average of 245$ per night. (Rather than 350 at least) Including breakfast and having kitchen etc. I think I’ll have a try at the book&cancel.Thanks.
