A potentially very good IHG Accelerate hotel promotion, especially for new members

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

IHG Rewards Club, the Holiday Inn, HI Express, Crowne Plaza, InterContinental etc loyalty scheme, has launched its new Autumn promotion – IHG Accelerate.

Unlike the fairly lacklustre offerings from Hilton HHonors and Marriott Rewards which I wrote about here and here last week, the IHG one does offer genuine value.  At least, it does for me.  Your own personal target may differ.

In addition, it offers a VERY good deal for new members of IHG Rewards Club should you or your travelling partner not already be a member.

Here are the headline details:

IHG Accelerate covers stays from September 1st to December 31st

All hotels are participating

Your bonus is personalised – you need to log in here to discover yours – but will be worth at least 50,000 IHG Rewards Club points (which I value at £250)

This was my target for 87,800 points maximum, comprising:

  • 5,000 points on my next stay
  • 7,200 points for completing four nights
  • 19,200 points for staying at two different brands
  • 9,600 points for staying at two Holiday Inn hotels
  • 4,800 points for booking two stays with the IHG app
  • 15,000 points for spending two consecutive weekend nights at an InterContinental
  • 27,000 points for hitting five of the above targets

I consider this very, very do-able – probably with stays I need to do anyway.  That would be (87,800 points x my £5 per 1000 valuation) £440 of free future stays.

My wife got this for 50,000 points maximum, comprising:

  • 5,000 points on my next stay
  • 6,800 points for completing five nights
  • 2,000 points for booking a Bonus Points package
  • 500 points for spending $50 on food and drink whilst at a hotel
  • 4,800 points for booking two stays with the IHG app
  • 2,000 points for applying for the IHG Premium Visa
  • 33,700 points for hitting five of the above targets

I don’t like this.  She had the Visa but cancelled it this year, and even if she got it again it would represent a £99 investment due to the fee, admittedly offset by the sign-up bonus.  Having to run up food and drink spend in a hotel and book a Bonus Points package both require spending which may not otherwise be needed.

That said, if I can steer her into doing one IHG stay for work then it would be an easy 5,000 points for hitting the first of her targets.

Not already an IHG Rewards Club member?  You’re in luck.

If you are not already an IHG Rewards Club member, you will receive a special offer when you sign up via the link on this page.

One free night voucher for completing two paid stays (any brand, any length)

A second free night voucher for completing four paid stays (any brand, any length)

This could work out very nicely.  The free night vouchers are valid wherever a standard reward night is shown as available.

You could make a substantial saving by doing four stays at a very cheap Holiday Inn Express – perhaps booking and checking in (but not necessarily staying) for the dead days around Christmas – and then using your two free nights at a £250+ per night InterContinental in New York, Paris, Hong Kong, London etc next year.

Before you get any ideas, I should stress that IHG is very good at picking up duplicate accounts.  They appear to cross reference lots of data, including the credit card used to pay for stays.  However, if your travelling partner is not an IHG Rewards Club member then this would be a good chance to sign them up.

Conclusion

As long as your target is sensible, this is probably the most generous hotel promotion you are likely to see this Autumn.  There is an Accor promotion coming down the line which may be better if your IHG target is unreasonable.

Log in to the Accelerate website here and see what your target is.

Thanks Raffles! I’ve just joined and will be seeing if I can find 4 cheap stays and get 2 free nights in New York next year!

    • Kathy says:

Does IHG have a rate calendar view anywhere, or is it a case of picking dates and seeing what comes up?

      • Rob says:

No rate calendar. The US Travelocity site used to have a rate calendar which worked for every hotel (it was built up when people searched) but it got dropped.

registered my mum cause we are travelling together and she got:
Stay Twice Get Free Night Offer
Stay Twice More Free Night Offer

does that mean that 4 stays of 1 night each are enough to get 2 free nights at an IHC?

    Thanks

  • Nick says:

Mine is really basic: it’s 58k points for staying 18 nights, broken down in to (mostly) 3k increments for 3 nights. Any brand.

Not really worth doing any more than taking the low-hanging fruit on this one for me. I’ve got a 2-night stay coming up in Sept in a Holiday Inn Express already, so hopefully that will count as I get an easy 10,000 points for that. One more stay during the promotion period would give me 6000 more, and I have a few cheap airport hotels to book so I’ll probably do that too. Beyond that, I’m not really that bothered about the 1000 extra points I’m getting per night.

We’ve also got two different two-night stays to book, so I think my wife will be signing up if it means she gets 2x free night vouchers!

  • Aman says:

    Hi

Just wondering if anybody knows the official stance on churning the IHG Visa Card?

I had the £99 card but cancelled as soon as my Spire Membership came through…

    Thanks

    • Rob says:

Not yet fully clear as Barclays has only been running it in-house for a year. You CAN churn the Hilton card with a gap (I recommend 12 months but some people have got it again more quickly) so I imagine the IHG card is the same.

  • Diydegsy says:

    My offer seems very good
    5000 stay once
    2000 if bonus rate booked
    1500 paid by ihg visa
    6800 stay 5 nights
The good thing is I only have to complete 3 of these for bonus of 34,000 so I don’t need to do the 5 nights. Am I right in thinking if I stay just one night, pay by ihg visa and book the bonus rate all for the same night I will get all the points or do the offers have to be booked separately?

    • Ed E says:

Exactly the same as I think for my one a few posts above! I am going to give it a go!

  • Rich says:

    Mine seems pretty unrewarding

    Stay Once Get 1,000
    Stay 6 night(s) and earn 15,600
5,400 bonus points when you book 3 stay(s) using Points and Cash
Spend $39 on food or beverages at IHG® hotels and earn 900
Apply for the IHG® Rewards Club Premium Visa® and earn 2,000

Complete 4 of 5 offers and earn (an additional) 25,100

Annoyingly, I would have knocked several of these off over the last month, but I don’t have any current plans, and I don’t see any reason to go out of my way for the points on offer.

  • Nick says:

My parents have two separate 4-night stays at IHG properties in October. They are not members of the loyalty programme. Do you know if it is possible for one of them to join up, allocate those stays to their new account and therefore earn the two free night certificates?

    • Rob says:

Depends if it is ‘stays’ or ‘nights’, there seem to be two versions knocking around. Irrespective, existing bookings are OK so no reason they can’t sign up and give their IHG number at check-in.

      • Nick says:

Fantastic, thanks. My wife got “stays” which is the harder of the two, but it’s still a fantastic offer. It works, too: we now have a strong preference for IHG properties for our upcoming trip to Australia.
