A potentially very good IHG Accelerate hotel promotion, especially for new members

IHG Rewards Club, the Holiday Inn, HI Express, Crowne Plaza, InterContinental etc loyalty scheme, has launched its new Autumn promotion – IHG Accelerate.

Unlike the fairly lacklustre offerings from Hilton HHonors and Marriott Rewards which I wrote about here and here last week, the IHG one does offer genuine value.  At least, it does for me.  Your own personal target may differ.

In addition, it offers a VERY good deal for new members of IHG Rewards Club should you or your travelling partner not already be a member.

Here are the headline details:

IHG Accelerate covers stays from September 1st to December 31st

All hotels are participating

Your bonus is personalised – you need to log in here to discover yours – but will be worth at least 50,000 IHG Rewards Club points (which I value at £250)

This was my target for 87,800 points maximum, comprising:

  • 5,000 points on my next stay
  • 7,200 points for completing four nights
  • 19,200 points for staying at two different brands
  • 9,600 points for staying at two Holiday Inn hotels
  • 4,800 points for booking two stays with the IHG app
  • 15,000 points for spending two consecutive weekend nights at an InterContinental
  • 27,000 points for hitting five of the above targets

I consider this very, very do-able – probably with stays I need to do anyway.  That would be (87,800 points x my £5 per 1000 valuation) £440 of free future stays.

My wife got this for 50,000 points maximum, comprising:

  • 5,000 points on my next stay
  • 6,800 points for completing five nights
  • 2,000 points for booking a Bonus Points package
  • 500 points for spending $50 on food and drink whilst at a hotel
  • 4,800 points for booking two stays with the IHG app
  • 2,000 points for applying for the IHG Premium Visa
  • 33,700 points for hitting five of the above targets

I don’t like this.  She had the Visa but cancelled it this year, and even if she got it again it would represent a £99 investment due to the fee, admittedly offset by the sign-up bonus.  Having to run up food and drink spend in a hotel and book a Bonus Points package both require spending which may not otherwise be needed.

That said, if I can steer her into doing one IHG stay for work then it would be an easy 5,000 points for hitting the first of her targets.

Not already an IHG Rewards Club member?  You’re in luck.

If you are not already an IHG Rewards Club member, you will receive a special offer when you sign up via the link on this page.

One free night voucher for completing two paid stays (any brand, any length)

A second free night voucher for completing four paid stays (any brand, any length)

This could work out very nicely.  The free night vouchers are valid wherever a standard reward night is shown as available.

You could make a substantial saving by doing four stays at a very cheap Holiday Inn Express – perhaps booking and checking in (but not necessarily staying) for the dead days around Christmas – and then using your two free nights at a £250+ per night InterContinental in New York, Paris, Hong Kong, London etc next year.

Before you get any ideas, I should stress that IHG is very good at picking up duplicate accounts.  They appear to cross reference lots of data, including the credit card used to pay for stays.  However, if your travelling partner is not an IHG Rewards Club member then this would be a good chance to sign them up.

Conclusion

As long as your target is sensible, this is probably the most generous hotel promotion you are likely to see this Autumn.  There is an Accor promotion coming down the line which may be better if your IHG target is unreasonable.

Log in to the Accelerate website here and see what your target is.

Question. I got this (amongst others):

Get closer to the rewards you want when you stay 5 night(s) and earn 6,800 bonus points

Could I cover this with one booking for one night for five rooms for five people?

    • Rob says:

You can’t do 5 rooms but hotel schemes often let you do 2-3 rooms – check the T&C’s and see what the IHG rules are. I did 2 Hilton rooms in Canada last week.

Note that you may (or may not, depending on what IHG says in the rules) have to consolidate all the charges onto one bill at check-out to get multiple credit.

    • HayMow says:

When i booked multiple rooms at a Holiday Inn last November – 3 rooms for 6 people – only 1 room counted for IHG’s then Into The Nights promo IIRC (& for room credit points – only food & drink credited to another room came through as points from the other 2 rooms)

  • trickster says:

I’ve been looking at the hotel packages on the Legoland Holidays website – does anyone know if these qualify as stays in the eyes of IGH, Hilton et al? There are some good deals at the moment, with the extra day at the park and kids free offers.

  • Chris says:

My o/h has only ever used her account for 1 paid stay and here is her offer!
Stay once in September and earn 5,000 bonus points
Thank you for being a loyal IHG® Rewards Club member. Stay once and earn 5,000 bonus points
Stay 30 nights and earn 41,600 bonus points
Get an additional 5,000 points after night 35
Get an additional 5,000 points after night 40
Get an additional 5,000 points after night 45
Get an additional 5,000 points after night 50
Get an additional 40,000 points after night 55

No additional bonus for completing x of the offers. So can anyone top an offer of 55 nights?!? 55 nights in the next 127 days,

    • Tony says:

Man alive, that’s a harsh looking challenge.

    • Thunderbirds says:

      Sadly Yes…

      5,000 September Bonus Play
      5,000 Stay Once Get 5,000

  • Colin JE says:

Do I get the prize for the most boring offer? Spire member.
Stay once in September and earn 5,000 bonus points.
    Stay Once Get 5,000
Stay 4 nights and earn 4,800 bonus points.
Get an additional 3,000 points after night 7.

Get an additional 3,000 points after night 13.
Get an additional 3,000 points after night 16.
Get an additional 30,000 points after night 19.

That’s it. Nothing for different brands, weekends, using my IHG card. But one night in September will trigger the first two offers and earn 10,000 points.

    • Liz says:

I have the exact same offer as you! I could have used my IHG card . Thinking the same thing – will maybe stay the one night somewhere cheap in Scotland and get the first 2 bonuses.

  • Romano says:

Mine is 70K points for 28 days but the way it is set out incentivises me just for the first two trips (earning 5K each), after that i have to rack up an additional 18 nights before getting a bonus.

  • Andy says:

I feel like mine is quite poor.

    1k for a 1 night stay
    6.8k for 5 nights
2k for a bonus points stay
1.5k for booking a night with my IHG Premium Visa
    0.6k for $39 food/drink spend
38.1k for completing 4 out of 5 offers

The only saving grace of that is I think I can do 4 out of 5 with a single booking for 43,200 points, which may be good value but not really a lot to get excited about there.

  • Alan says:

Hmm I think you’ve been a bit generous in your title here Rob – more like “potentially very good but potentially rubbish”!!

    Mine is:
Complete all your offers to get 50,000 total bonus points
    1 Stay Once Get 5,000
    2 Stay 5 night(s) and earn 6,800 bonus points.
3 Stay at 2 number of brands and get 9,600 bonus points.
4 Book 2 stay(s) with the IHG® App and earn 3,200 bonus points.
5 Earn 2,000 bonus points when you book 1 Bonus Points Package stay(s)
6 Spend $80 on food or beverages at IHG® hotels and earn 800 bonus points.
7 Book and pay for your next getaway at an IHG hotel using your IHG® Rewards Club Visa® card and earn 1,500 bonus points.

Complete 6 of 7 offers and earn (an additional) 21,100 bonus points.

With 2 stays at 2 different brands booked via the app using my IHG Visa I could get 19,300 pts, however I’m not going to stay 5 nights with them so would then need to book a bonus package and spent $80 on food to get the other 23.900 and I’m not really sure are worth the additional spend that I wouldn’t otherwise be making.

Over and above this I have zero faith in IHG IT to actually track any of this properly!!

At present I don’t have any stays to throw their way (not a massive selection of properties in Oz) so am sticking with the Hilton 2x/3x promo on my next stay.

I enjoyed the first IHG personalised promo but the next two have been pretty rubbish and have put me off staying with them more. I’ve only had one stay with them in 2015 (using my free night voucher from the Visa card), so was hoping for something a bit more appealing!

  • abc says:

Stupid question: Is there a way to find which night are the cheapest for a given hotel without searching each individual night? The IHG website does not seem to have that functionality.

    • Rob says:

No. Friday / Saturday / Sunday nights generally cheapest. The days between Christmas and New Year are often very cheap as are the last few days before Christmas and weekends in November (Christmas shopping not started, no tourist traffic) – although it may be a bit far out for hotels to have started dropping their rates for that period.

I remember, about 10 years ago, being able to get Holiday Inn Express properties around London – admittedly the more remote ones – for £29!
