Get a 20% bonus on Tesco Clubcard conversions to Avios

British Airways Executive Club has announced the first “open to all” transfer bonus from Tesco Clubcard to Avios since, I think, July 2012.

From 1st November – so DO NOT CONVERT TODAY – until 30th November, you will receive a 20% transfer bonus on conversions from Tesco Clubcard into British Airways Executive Club.

Auto-convert members are OK as transfers which were made after 20th October will also receive the bonus.

Tesco Clubcard

There is a cap of £100 on the amount of Tesco vouchers that can be transferred.  You cannot get around this by sending £100 to BA and £100 to avios.com, because avios.com is not participating in this offer.

Full details can be found on the Clubcard website here.

Note that the wording between the site and the rules is not exactly the same.  The site says that you must convert in multiples of £10 to get the bonus.  The small print simply says that you must convert a minimum of £10 – and that once you are above that, you get the bonus on whatever amount you send over up to £100.

This bonus is not entirely unexpected.  I know that the Avios devaluation has impacted the willingness of some people to collect Avios from third parties.  This is purely common sense – if you believe that an Avios point is worth less than it was, other Clubcard redemption options or credit cards begin to look more attractive.

Avios, on the other hand, relies on income from third party issuers of Avios points.  The points issued from British Airways flights are a cost whilst the points issued via third parties are a revenue stream.

The only way to overcome this impact is to offer a transfer bonus which lessens the devaluation.  Where BA has gone wrong here is in capping the transfer at £100 – it was Club World redemption pricing which took the biggest hit, and only being able to transfer £100 of vouchers (28,800 Avios) is not going to make much impact.

Remember that Virgin Atlantic is also offering a 15% conversion bonus.  This is the first time in a long, long time that Virgin has had a poorer offer than BA!

The other thing to bear in mind is that Clubcard Boost returns on Monday, allowing you to get double the face value of your vouchers at Tesco Direct or for certain products in-store.  You should consider if this is a better deal or not.  Avios probably win out – a £10 Clubcard voucher would be worth £20 in Tesco Direct or 2,880 Avios points so you are effectively ‘buying’ Avios at 0.69p which is a good deal.

  • Ryan says:

I transferred £100 yesterday and got 24000 Avios today so without the bonus.
Will it post later or should it post immediately? Do I need to call and complain?

    • Jenny says:

Same happened to me. Now I’m worried that it was because I didn’t receive the email.

      • harry says:

I think they just changed the dates (in our favour):
        2. This offer allows you to collect: 20% bonus Avios on exchanges of £10.00 or more in Clubcard vouchers between 00:01 hr GMT 1 November and 23:59 hr GMT 30 November 2015 (the ‘Promotional Period). Simply sign in to your Tesco Clubcard account and exchange your Clubcard vouchers into the British Airways Executive Club and the bonus will automatically be credited to your account. Customers who automatically convert their Clubcard points to Avios will receive 20% bonus Avios on exchanges of over 1000 Clubcard points made between 20 October and 30 November 2015.

      • harry says:

And meant to add: don’t worry overmuch, I do genuinely think you’ll get the 20% bonus added later.

If not, stick in a complaint, but a bit early for that.

Rather silly they couldn’t arrange to add the bonus more quickly, but I guess it’s going to be manually added in blocks.

      • Liz says:

I just phoned Tesco to ask about the email and whether you could transfer more than one lot of £100 and if you could do one lot from a joint clubcard to my BA account and one to my husbands. She didn’t have a clue and after asking around still didn’t know. She said the bonus will probably post after 28 days and that I should phone BA about whether they would accept two amounts from the one account. As regards the email bit she was clueless.

  • harry says:

The minimum conversion to get the bonus now seems to be £2.50.

  • redrules says:

I transferred £45 worth on the 30th October, thinking I was safe as the Clubcard site was listing this offer saying it would expire the 30th Nov but it wasn’t clear it didn’t start till the 1st Nov. It may have been buried deep down in the t&c’s but I think it’s rather unfair to have a special offer up and not make it clear it hasn’t started yet.

Did this happen to anyone else or was I the only stupid person? Would I have any luck phoning up Tesco to complain? We’re planning on booking a reward flight in a couple of days and those few extra thousand Avios points would help as we’re already short.

    • redrules says:

Actually I see I’m not the only one. Have emailed Tesco to explain and will see if they fix it.

      • redrules says:

Got a phone call from Tesco a couple of hours after I sent the email, which is great customer service.

Sadly they didn’t offer me any Clubcard points. Just told me they will email Avios today to see if they can add on the bonus points, or cancel the whole transaction and I get my Clubcard points back.

She warned me changes like that could take up to 28 working days. Of course I’m not happy about that as I’m wanting to use the points this week to book a reward flight.

Will wait and see what they come back with in 48 hours. Would have just been far easier to give me £10 in Clubcard points that I could again transfer and make up for the missing bonus points.

  • DeanV says:

I transferred £100 and only got 24k Avios.

However I took a screenshot of the page (after I logged in) showing the 20% bonus.

    Wait and see

    • CV3V says:

Back in the old days of conversion bonuses, the bonus points posted separately. Its so long ago though I cant check back to see how later it usually was.

      • avidsaver says:

To my recollection they posted separately but at the same time. There was certainly no waiting until the end of the promotion!

  • James67 says:

The offer link near the top of Raffles post is no longer advertising any bonus that I can see. When I signed in my clubcard account I cannot see any offer for ither BA, Avios or Virgin.

    • James67 says:

Thanks Rob, when I clicked on link it came up with mobile page and no offer details, just the usul 600. However, this time I toggled that page to desktop site and bonus details came up. I will try conversion from laptop this evening.

  • Alvin says:

Can you only convert Tesco points to British Airways Executive Club accounts that are UK domiciled? I have just put thru £100 of CC vouchers into a Singapore-domiciled BAEC account…

  • Londonbus says:

Tesco have confirmed to me via twitter that its open to anyone with an existing BAEC account.

Look for tweets from @TescoOffersMore to @robertwoolley at c. 13.54 today.

  • harry says:

    Let’s check the English.

    3. Eligible Participants will not receive bonus Avios on transactions over £100.00 in Clubcard Vouchers.

That is very easy to understand. A transaction would be the deal, the exchange of clubcard points into Avios. Each transaction should not exceed £100 in clubcard vouchers.

It patently does not say maximum £100 per account, whether BAEC account or Tesco clubcard account.

You can therefore logically freely exchange as many Tesco clubcard points into Avios, provided you do not exceed £100 in clubcard voucher per transaction.

    • Liz says:

So are you going to transfer lots of your club card points over in £100 batches. Tesco didn’t know the answer this morning about whether you would get the bonus on subsequent transfers – they suggested calling BA. I did call them and the person didn’t have a clue what I was talking about!

      • harry says:

I will be doing a bit of that.

But – whilst I know Raffles said it both ways, 1 that Avios.com & BAEC see Avios different ways, ie cost vs revenue; & 2 there’s not much difference between the 2 schemes in our view as users because Avios are freely convertible between Avios.com & BAEC – I would suggest it’s quite likely that in the new year Avios.com will run a similar promotion to this one. (They need to get the 3 month Flybe promo out of the way.)

Which means if I’m wrong on several multiples of £100 being OK, then it’s worth saving some £100s for Avios.com’s conversion bonus.

I guess I’ll try about £500 for myself & the wife.

I think the bonus might start getting paid in days (not in November), so no point in delaying if my understanding of the Plain English in the T&Cs is correct.

        • Liz says:

When I first read the t&c’s I thought the same as you ie. That it doesn’t state a restriction. It is just so annoying that Tesco cannot confirm one way or the other to those who have saved up their vouchers for this very purpose. I will probably transfer some more over but will wait and see it the bonuses post before 30/11 first !

        • Andrew says:

          Harry,

Do you mind sharing your tips for getting so many clubcard points? Were you a master of the CV3V (or whatever it was called, I was too late for that game) or …?

          Andrew

          • harry says:

Everything I used last Q was posted on HFP, so no secrets. Yes, I did find quite a few 3V cards but you need to grab opportunities such as the printers when they arise, without going overboard. Tesco can be a bit mean on enforcing fair usage but no complaints last Q, my wife went quite a long way over 30K but they didn’t limit her to 30K

    • Rob says:

The issue is that if your interpretation is different to the Tesco interpretation, you will be testing your version down at the Small Claims Court.

One of the following is true but we don’t know which one:

      1. On transactions over £100, you only get the bonus on the first £100 and not the rest.
      2. On transactions over £100, you get no bonus at all

And one of these is true:

      1. Transactions means ‘separate conversions’
      2. Transactions means ‘cumulative conversions over the offer period’ (which would make sense, because the other option – whilst more logically sound from a wording point of view – makes no sense if you can do multiple small conversions)

      • Gill says:

        Has anyone received an email?
Could Tesco use this as an excuse not to add the bonus?
