British Airways Executive Club has announced the first “open to all” transfer bonus from Tesco Clubcard to Avios since, I think, July 2012.

From 1st November – so DO NOT CONVERT TODAY – until 30th November, you will receive a 20% transfer bonus on conversions from Tesco Clubcard into British Airways Executive Club.

Auto-convert members are OK as transfers which were made after 20th October will also receive the bonus.

Tesco Clubcard

There is a cap of £100 on the amount of Tesco vouchers that can be transferred.  You cannot get around this by sending £100 to BA and £100 to avios.com, because avios.com is not participating in this offer.

Full details can be found on the Clubcard website here.

Note that the wording between the site and the rules is not exactly the same.  The site says that you must convert in multiples of £10 to get the bonus.  The small print simply says that you must convert a minimum of £10 – and that once you are above that, you get the bonus on whatever amount you send over up to £100.

This bonus is not entirely unexpected.  I know that the Avios devaluation has impacted the willingness of some people to collect Avios from third parties.  This is purely common sense – if you believe that an Avios point is worth less than it was, other Clubcard redemption options or credit cards begin to look more attractive.

Avios, on the other hand, relies on income from third party issuers of Avios points.  The points issued from British Airways flights are a cost whilst the points issued via third parties are a revenue stream.

The only way to overcome this impact is to offer a transfer bonus which lessens the devaluation.  Where BA has gone wrong here is in capping the transfer at £100 – it was Club World redemption pricing which took the biggest hit, and only being able to transfer £100 of vouchers (28,800 Avios) is not going to make much impact.

Remember that Virgin Atlantic is also offering a 15% conversion bonus.  This is the first time in a long, long time that Virgin has had a poorer offer than BA!

The other thing to bear in mind is that Clubcard Boost returns on Monday, allowing you to get double the face value of your vouchers at Tesco Direct or for certain products in-store.  You should consider if this is a better deal or not.  Avios probably win out – a £10 Clubcard voucher would be worth £20 in Tesco Direct or 2,880 Avios points so you are effectively ‘buying’ Avios at 0.69p which is a good deal.

I have not received the bonus on an £11 transfer. I normally convert at the 800 rate and it has remained at the 800 rate.

  • Andrew says:

I’m interested in this 20% bonus offer. Previously I had my clubcard account set up to autoconvert points to BAEC every quarter, but I’ve just opted out of that so I can take advantage of this offer. How do you go about it? Thanks!

    • Rob says:

It appears that as long as you convert between £10 and £100, you get a 20% bonus at the end of the promotion. No more info available!

    • mark2 says:

you would have got the bonus on auto convert too

      • Andrew says:

But the offer ends on 30/11/15 and the next autoconversion isn’t until end of January. Am I misunderstanding here?

From what I gather reading the comments on this page, there is a link somewhere to convert points to your BAEC account *now* rather than wait until the autoconvert in the next quarter, ie January 2016.

        • Rob says:

          No, you misunderstood.

        • Liz says:

Andrew you need to log into your Tesco club card account. Go to Tesco boost and then airlines and click on BAEC to transfer your club card vouchers manually from there. You decide how much you want to convert then click on the appropriate vouchers to redeem to complete the order. Any which don’t divide by £2.50 will be refunded back onto your next statement. You can set your preferences on your account to auto convert in the future if you want but I would recommend you don’t. Keeping the vouchers yourself gives you flexibility to convert to BAEC, Avios or Virgin and to wait for a bonus offer like this one which is what most of us on here do.

  • Kathy H says:

I have heard from Tesco social media team that because I transferred over £100 (it was £102.50 with £2.50 going back on next statement) that I don’t qualify. This is getting rather silly – total Tesco fiasco.

    • harry says:

You should contest that. There will be no problem because you didn’t go over the £100 limit and did not breach the T&Cs. Just sounds like a useless Tesco person to me.

I’m more concerned about the £100s I converted last night, about £500 for my wife & myself. We’re both missing a couple of 24,000 Avios transactions. Ie £500 converted but only £300 has been received in Avios at BAEC.

Does it sometimes take longer than 24 hours to go through to BAEC?

      • Liz says:

Mine took 2 days to appear

        • harry says:

Thought it was worth taking a gamble on the double points thingy ( yep 🙂 ) and whether more than 1 lot of £100 will count for +20%. Nothing much to lose except if (say) avios.com do an unlimited +30% promo after Xmas etc lol

Except of course it seems they’ve possibly lost a few of our conversion Avios. Not bothered as it’s all traceable.

          • Liz says:

I’ve transferred about £80 over and above the £100 – looks like we won’t know about the bonus till after 30/11 – I am ok with it either way – if we get it great if not then fine. I have enough miles for our next USA trip so happy to leave the rest in club card points till the next offer comes along – hopefully not 3 years!

          • harry says:

Phew! – all there now I think, will double check later. Swiftly transferred my wife’s to avios.com. For the obvious reason.

No ‘bonus bonus’ lol today as far as I can see at this stage 🙂

  • Kathy H says:

After a few DM’s on social media to Tesco here is their reply:-

I’m sorry for the confusion ********* You are correct, you’ll receive an extra 20% bonus on up to £100 in Clubcard vouchers. The bonus will not show on your account just yet. We will credit your account with the appropiate bonus within 28 days of the end date of the promotion.

The promotion end date is 30th November and the bonus should show in your BA Avios account by Monday 28th December.

    I’m sorry any inconvenience caused………………..etc

So keep plugging away HFP readers and we shall see how many of us actually get the bonus.

    • harry says:

Tesco social media elsewhere reported has said the bonus 20% will come very soon after promotion end 30/11.

  • John says:

I transferred £100 for a first time ever conversion yesterday. They haven’t arrived in my BAEC account yet but I have got a confirmation email. I wanted to transfer some more so went back into my account but it’s still showing all my vouchers. As I didn’t make a note of which vouchers I’ve used I am now having to wait for the used ones to go.

Any idea how long this will likely take?

    • harry says:

You can’t use vouchers twice, the Tesco system identifies them as already used (and forbids it) when you try to use them twice, even if they show up in your a/c.

Thus it is easy to transfer some more by hit & miss.

    • Liz says:

Tomorrow – I did the same

  • Boi says:

I need to move my points to abios.com because I received 48000 for my transaction. Do people suggest I move EVERYTHING? I had 47000 before this…. can they retract them from abios.com? I have no plans to spend soon

    • Boi says:

just to add I only had £105 in my club card account at the start

      • harry says:

You might as well move them to abios.com, the worst they can probably do is put a note on your BAEC a/c to claw back the 24K when you earn new miles in BAEC. But you could open a new a/c?

  • harry says:

Anybody managed any ‘bonus bonus’ points lately? Quite a few of us got them, I guess on about 3/11. I’ve done a few transactions since then, but all went through regularly.

  • CardiffJock says:

I have a few hundred £ of CC points and have been waiting for conversion bonus, so have happily transferred £100 of vouchers to BAEC account.

My wife and two kids also have BAEC accounts numbers as we’re all part of the same HH account.

Any view on whether I could transfer 3 lots of £100 CC points from my CC account to their BAEC accounts and still get the 20% bonus…? I’m thinking it would get flagged but you never know?!

    • harry says:

see above – lots of discussion as to the ambiguities of the t&cs

consensus seems to be it might not work but give it a go if you can live with not getting the 20% bonus on the other a/cs

      might slip through
