British Airways Executive Club has announced the first “open to all” transfer bonus from Tesco Clubcard to Avios since, I think, July 2012.

From 1st November – so DO NOT CONVERT TODAY – until 30th November, you will receive a 20% transfer bonus on conversions from Tesco Clubcard into British Airways Executive Club.

Auto-convert members are OK as transfers which were made after 20th October will also receive the bonus.

Tesco Clubcard

There is a cap of £100 on the amount of Tesco vouchers that can be transferred.  You cannot get around this by sending £100 to BA and £100 to avios.com, because avios.com is not participating in this offer.

Full details can be found on the Clubcard website here.

Note that the wording between the site and the rules is not exactly the same.  The site says that you must convert in multiples of £10 to get the bonus.  The small print simply says that you must convert a minimum of £10 – and that once you are above that, you get the bonus on whatever amount you send over up to £100.

This bonus is not entirely unexpected.  I know that the Avios devaluation has impacted the willingness of some people to collect Avios from third parties.  This is purely common sense – if you believe that an Avios point is worth less than it was, other Clubcard redemption options or credit cards begin to look more attractive.

Avios, on the other hand, relies on income from third party issuers of Avios points.  The points issued from British Airways flights are a cost whilst the points issued via third parties are a revenue stream.

The only way to overcome this impact is to offer a transfer bonus which lessens the devaluation.  Where BA has gone wrong here is in capping the transfer at £100 – it was Club World redemption pricing which took the biggest hit, and only being able to transfer £100 of vouchers (28,800 Avios) is not going to make much impact.

Remember that Virgin Atlantic is also offering a 15% conversion bonus.  This is the first time in a long, long time that Virgin has had a poorer offer than BA!

The other thing to bear in mind is that Clubcard Boost returns on Monday, allowing you to get double the face value of your vouchers at Tesco Direct or for certain products in-store.  You should consider if this is a better deal or not.  Avios probably win out – a £10 Clubcard voucher would be worth £20 in Tesco Direct or 2,880 Avios points so you are effectively ‘buying’ Avios at 0.69p which is a good deal.

Hi, I transfered my point using this promotion last week Nov 3rd (GBP50 vorth of vouchers) but only got the 600point not the 20% bonus. Does the bonus come separately or do i need to call and make a fuss? 🙂 thanks

    • harry says:

see comments above, this has been addressed several times

    • Rob says:

People are being told it will post within 28 days of the promo closing on 30th November. Which is annoying.

  • John says:

Just received ‘The Email’ – from BAEC. So I guess I’m now an Eligible Participant who is eligible to participate in the thing that we assumed everyone was an eligible participant in.

    2. Converting Clubcard vouchers to British Airways Executive Club Avios Points (‘Avios’) on exchanges of £10.00 or more (up to £100), exchanged between 00:01 GMT 1 November 2015 and 23:59 GMT 30 November 2015, will entitle Eligible Participants to a 20% bonus Avios. To take advantage of the Promotion, Eligible Participants must sign in to their Tesco Clubcard account and exchange their Clubcard vouchers into Avios and the bonus will automatically be credited to their Executive Club account.
    3. Alternatively, customers who automatically convert their Clubcard points to Avios will receive 20% bonus Avios on exchanges of over 1000 Clubcard points (subject to the maximum limit of 10,000 Clubcard points) when made between 20 October and 30 November 2015

    • Scott says:

Me too they took their time sending it out!. At least they have

    • Grimz says:

Does this mean if you haven’t received the email you wont get the bonus? Nothing sent to me yet and i have converted £100 for me and £100 for my Partner! ) :

    • Kev says:

Have also received the email this afternoon. Only have about £60 to transfer at the moment.

  • Bill says:

OK seems like they’ve made a mess of this one. ( im not complaining) I got a few more miles than advertised. 😉

  • Brian says:

I received an email but neither my mum or dad did. What on earth is going on with this? Bit of a farce!

    • Christopher says:

At the bottom of my BAEC email, there’s the usual stuff about it being sent to me because I have opted to receive marketing e-mails. If anyone has opted out of such e-mails, then I suppose they may never be sent the offer and may thus be deemed to be ineligible – even though the T&Cs still make them Eligible Participants…

      • harry says:

Quite a good point, I might just opt us all back in lol

I don’t think they’re at all likely to enforce this email condition, though. They’ve advertised the promotion too prominently on Tesco site.

        • harry says:

I’m opted in to emails but didn’t get one yet

          • Liz says:

Hey Harry – my daughter got the email but not me and my husband and we are all opted in – what a fiasco the whole thing is. We all now need to ‘wait and see’ what happens after 30/11 !

      • Brian says:

I checked and that may be a good shout re the opted out thing unfortunately.

Both myself and my gf are opted in and we got it. However my mum and dad hadnt ticked the email button in their BAE account and havent received.

Thats pretty darn annoying. ive just updated their details, do you think the email may come through or too late now?

Then again people are saying they are opted in and havent received it. No idea.

        • Liz says:

There is no rhyme or reason to any of it !

        • harry says:

Another conundrum? I don’t want 3rd party offers, so I’m opted out for that box. Does this offer come from BAEC or Tesco?

          • Paul says:

The email (I received it too) was definitely sent from BA rather than Tesco. Who knows whether they’d count it as a 3rd party mailing though!

          • Liz says:

Now that the ’email’ has materialised it must be a BAEC offer

          • Brian says:

            From BA

  • Jerry says:

My partner and I both received the email from BA today – as stated above small print states:
“You have received this email because you have opted to receive Executive Club marketing emails from the British Airways Group”.
Will go ahead and transfer now. They have between them (BA and Tesco) really messed this long awaited promotion up.

  • Fuggi says:

I have also now received the email
For anyone checking which opt-ins they have, it came from BAEC (rather than Tesco’s)
Exchange ordered, fingers crossed I won’t have to spend any time chasing extra points down on the phone!

  • Marti says:

    Question for experts:
    What about:
    1. Creating few BA accounts
    2. Transfer £100 Tesco vouchers to each of them (from different Clubcard accounts)
    3. Get the bonus for all BA accounts
    4. Merge all BA accounts in one Household Account?

  • George says:

If you have bonus points that were generated after the quarterly cutoff for vouchers last month, Tesco will transfer to BA Executive Club if you call and make a specific request even if you don’t yet have the vouchers. I tried it last week and it worked. So for example, if you bought that printer for £79 (now £49) you can take advantage of the 20% conversion bonus.

    • harry says:

That’s good to know. Might be a nice method to spirit away printer points 🙂
