Alitalia now using the Etihad lounge in T4 – get free status with your BA Silver or Gold card

Etihad took pseudo control of struggling Italian flag carrier Alitalia earlier this year.

If you need to fly to Italy on a regular basis, the good news is that from 1st December you can now use the Etihad lounge in Heathrow Terminal 4.

I reviewed the Etihad Heathrow lounge here.   It isn’t as good as the Qatar Airways lounge but it certainly isn’t bad (I am back there next week as it happens).  For a short-haul lounge, it will be fantastic.  You will be getting very high quality food, served at your table, as well as access to free treatments at the Six Senses Spa.

Alitalia card

It isn’t yet clear exactly who gets access and who will be remaining in the SkyTeam lounge.  Freccia Alata Plus members are definitely getting in.  It is not clear if Freccia Alata (middle tier) or general Alitalia business class customers can also use the Etihad facilities.

Don’t forget your Alitalia status match

The reason I mentioned this story is that, in case you haven’t done it yet, Alitalia is currently offering a status match to British Airways Executive Club Gold and Silver members as well as other top-tier and middle-tier status holders with other airlines.

The scheme

The Alitalia frequent flyer scheme is called MilleMiglia.  There are four elite levels.

As a British Airways Gold, you will be matched to Freccia Alata Plus.  This level is equivalent to SkyTeam Elite Plus which is the equivalent of oneworld Emerald.

As a British Airways Silver, you will be matched to Freccia Alata.   This is ALSO considered to be SkyTeam Elite Plus.  This means that you would get worldwide lounge access with SkyTeam except on US domestic flights with Delta.  It isn’t yet clear if it gets you into the Etihad lounge when flying on Alitalia.  It does get you in when flying on Etihad.

Why you should do this even if you never fly Alitalia

Alitalia is now a member of two airline alliances.

The formal membership is with SkyTeam.  Your Freccia Alata Plus card would get you top tier privileges, including lounge access (except on domestic Delta flights in the US, I think), with the following airlines:

  • Aeroflot
  • AerolineasArgentinas
  • AeroMexico
  • AirEuropa
  • Air France
  • Alitalia
  • China Airlines
  • China Eastern
  • China Southern
  • Czech Airlines
  • Delta
  • Garuda Indonesia
  • Kenya Airways
  • KLM
  • Korean Air
  • MEA
  • Saudia
  • Tarom
  • Vietnam Airlines
  • Xiamen Air

Alitalia is also a member of Etihad Airways Partners.  This is not yet finalised, but the eventual plan is that a status holder with any of the following airlines – all of which have received equity investment from Etihad – will have reciprocal privileges with the others.

  • Etihad
  • Jet Airways
  • airberlin
  • Air Serbia
  • Air Seychelles
  • Etihad Regional

Alitalia also has partnerships with GOL, Malaysia and Qantas but I’m not sure if they offer any benefits for Alitalia top tier cardholders.

There is another reason to get a match.  You never know when there might be an opportunity to match your Alitalia status to a different Star Alliance or oneworld airline!

How do I get a status match?

You need to email a scan of your British Airways Gold card and your MilleMiglia account number (so you need to open an account first) to statusmatchmillemiglia@alitalia.com.

Here are the rules:

You have until 31st December 2015 to ask for a match

The match will last until March 2016 UNLESS your existing status card shows an expiry date beyond March 2016.  If it does, your matched card will be issued until March 2017.

ANY elite status card from an airline which is not part of the SkyTeam alliance will be accepted

I’ve tried twice now to get Alitalia to match my BA Gold to be told both times they can not read my card!

I’ve tried the screenshot from the app and photos of the physical card…

    • James says:

In my experience, it took a photo of my Alitalia basic card and my silver card side by side to work. I sent them a .jpg and a .pdf of the same thing; everything else, such as screen shots, didn’t work. I must have tried 5 times but only took a minute and now got it until 2017 so am pleased

      • alan says:

sent them my BA silver and received the card within a few weeks – I took a picture of the card on an Iphone 5.

Remember email has a limit of 2mb on most corperate systems otherwise it will get corrupted.

  • Alan says:

Remember if you get Freccia Alata Plus, you also get a free Freccia Alata card for a friend, valid until the same expiry date as your own card. Pretty handy to be able to give someone else lounge access/extra baggage/free checked bag on Delta, etc.

    • Adam says:

How do you get the free Alata card for a friend? I’ve looked everywhere for a form of some sort, but can’t find it…

      • Rob says:

There is apparently a letter in the pack explaining how to do it but it is kind of hidden at first glance (apparently). I assume you got Plus?

The next thing you do is match your friends Freccia Alata to airberlin via their status match (you will need a German, Austrian, Swiss address) and they suddenly have BA-equivalent status too!

        • Adam says:

Thanks – yes I have Plus. Hopefully the letter arrives soon so I can give my dad the Alata card for his Etihad flights in January.

Status matching family has taken this to a whole new level!

‘There is apparently a letter in the pack explaining how to do it but it is kind of hidden at first glance (apparently).’

It’s the 3rd bullet point in my welcome letter. Apply via http://bit.ly/CFAfor YOU using the code in the welcome letter.

        • Alan says:

My friend found their online account status had just updated, that only took a week from filling out the online form! 🙂

      • Alan says:

Yes, there’s a little card in the pack that has the details – basically your friend/relative needs to setup their own MileMiglia account, then there’s a webform to fill out (link on the card, even a QR code to get you straight to the page!) – it needs their name and account number/email address, then your name and a unique promo code that’s on the form.

I don’t know yet how quickly the account is upgraded or the card is sent out, will hopefully know that soon though!

Shows the benefit in looking through all the stuff in a welcome pack – sometimes there’s good stuff there!

    • Lady London says:

      Virgin does the same

  • sd83 says:

Can I match my gulf air gold frequent flyer card using this? It’s valid March 2017.

  • Adam says:

Will alata plus members flying on KLM also be able to access the Etihad lounge?

  • idrive says:

what a pity I am travelling tomorrow 🙁 and next time I will fly from City. 🙁

I wish I could extend my FrecciaAlata till 2017! I will try and find a way.

  • james says:

I tried and heard nothing. From FT it seems you have to bombard them with many emails before you get anywhere.

    • Sav says:

Raffles, I got a match to Freccia Alata Plus from Gulf Air Gold and it is valid until Apr 17. I then matched that to Star Alliance Gold via Avianca Brazil until Apr 17! So by doing virtually no flying with these airlines I have elite status in Skyteam and Star Aliance and Oneworld through the AirBerlin status match earlier this year. I also have Etihad Gold who matched me from CX Gold when I had it as part of Amex Plat.

      • idrive says:

SAV: my Gulfair gold was matched to FrecciaAlata, non plus. are you sure?? did anyone ask you for your travel path (printescreen from bookings). I remember Etihad did not just upgrade you sending the cards.
Avianca: with a UK registered address? then LH?

        • Sav says:

Hi, I should have said Skyteam elite plus not Alata plus- the colour of the Alitalia card is gold. No one asked for my travel history or screenshots of my accounts, not even Etihad. They took about 6 weeks to give me a match- suddenly out if the blue they emailed me to welcome me to gold status. You can have any address to get star gold with Avianca Brazil, if you google Avianca Brazil status match others have posted how to do it. They take 4 weeks to give you status and you get a printable card straight after. What was your question about LH?

          • Idrive says:

Ok so i got the same as you (alata/gold)
Then you said from Avianca to LH. I will try. And as i applied for the Etihad card i ll ask them o upgrade from silver to gold too

          • Sav says:

Ummm I’m confused. I didn’t mention LH. Avianca Brazil gave me star gold so I don’t need to do anything with Lufthansa…in fact i stay away from them given all their striking!

  • Cosmo74 says:

I used my Freccia Alata card to get lounge access on an internal flight with AeroMexico two weeks ago, so has that changed recently?

  • Sean says:

I sent an email with a scan of my card (pdf), a picture of my card (jpg) and a download of my online card (pdf), it took them 10 days to match my BA Silver card to Freccia Alata. They haven’t sent me an email since I was matched, I had to look online to see that my card was no longer green.
