News in brief:

Bookings open for the new InterContinental London The O2

The new InterContinental London The O2 is now taking bookings from 19th December.

This is a slightly risky hotel project but the owners have had the sense to include what they are calling ‘one of the largest column-free ballrooms in Europe’.  This should guarantee them the conference and exhibition business that will keep the 453 bedrooms full.

With five food and beverage outlets, including a panoramic ‘sky bar’, and what looks like an impressive – albeit small – swimming pool (does any other IHG hotel in London have a pool except for Holiday Inn Wembley?), it certainly has a lot to offer without the guest needing to leave the building.

Surprisingly, it is not offering any opening deals for redemptions as you often see with new IHG hotels.  From Day 1, it will cost 50,000 points per night.  This is a pretty bad deal given that the cash cost is under £150 from what I can see.

I am hoping to check the hotel out with a Head for Points review early in the New Year.  You can find out more at the dedicated website here.

See Madonna with Hilton HHonors points

Finally, Hilton @Play still has some tickets left to see Madonna in Birmingham on 16th December and in Glasgow on 20th December.

The cost is 75,000 Hilton HHonors points for two ‘premium’ tickets.  It is not a giveaway at that price but, if you have Hilton points you are struggling to use, it would make a pleasant change.  The Hilton @Play site is here.

I bought the tickets to see Madonna in Glasgow via Hilton @ play and they said that the tickets are p1 category which appears to be some sort of VIP package, definitely worth redeeming for 75000 points

  • @mkcol says:

Funny I made my booking at the Intercontinental The O2 on 18th October.

But at 50,000 points the redemption was good value (for me) as the cash cost was over £230/night.

  • Brian says:

Apparently, they do have the same opening deal as all new IHG – i.e. free breakfast, late check-out and bonus points. May not always be available, though.

We moved into our current rental town house 2.5 years ago, right opposite the O2. Soon after we moved in they started the ground breaking for the Intercontinental. It was noisy for 2 weeks with the thumping sound. We have watched – across the river – the progress of the construction. It does look nice from our side. I may go over there one day, after it opens, to check it out.

The Crowne Plaza London Docklands has a little pool, nothing exciting but they have “Spa” facilities too!

  • Arnaud Amiel says:

Holiday Inn King Cross has a swimming pool. A couple of years back, my son wanted a holiday which for him means going to a hotel with a swimming pool.
So at the last minute we looked for a night in London with a swimming pool. Don’t know why we chose this one but we did. It is really out of the way and not very nice but great view on the post office sorting office which my son loved. What’s more, on that weekend the pool was closed for its annual cleaning.
    Won’t go there again.

I doubt seeing Madonna would make a pleasant change at any cost – but thats just my opinion

Seems to have been moved back from the 19th to the 23rd?
