Bits: bizarre new Marriott ‘no desk’ policy, more British Airways Shanghai flights

News in brief:

Is Marriott really getting rid of desks because young people don’t find them cool?

In my articles on the takeover of Starwood by Marriott, I made a couple of observations about the perceived lack of cultural fit.  The team that created ‘W’ hotels is unlikely to sit happily in a Mormon dominated institution that still insists on bibles in every bedroom and a big photo of Bill Marriott in the lobby.

Exhibit B on ‘how Marriott just doesn’t get it’ is in this article from Slate.  As Marriott-branded hotels are refurbished, Marriott is ripping out the desks.  They’ve seen all those kids in Starbucks with laptops on their knees and they have decided that desks are just so not cool.  The business traveller of today prefers to sit in bed with a chai latte (although it is unclear where you would get a chai latte at your average Marriott) with their Macbook on their lap.

If you are under 30, I blame you.  You were asked at some focus group why you refused to stay at Marriott hotels and you said ‘because they have desks in the rooms’.   You’ve screwed it up for the rest of us now.

British Airways increases Shanghai frequencies – should be good Avios availability

British Airways has announced that it is adding three additional flights per week to Shanghai from 20th February.  These will be coded BA160/161.

As always with new BA routes, Avios availability will be excellent as the flights will have been loaded with two Club World seats and four World Traveller seats on every service.

From 1st August, the main daily Shanghai flight will be switched to a new Boeing 787-9.  The additional three weekly flights will remain on a Boeing 777-200.

  • BLT says:

OT: Just got an email from SPG offering 20K points for the Amex credit card when you spend 2k. Appears to be targetted ( both me and my wife) as you have to apply via the email link before Jan 6.

    • Rob says:

Strictly targetted but I have asked Amex if I can have a link for HFP readers – lets see. Depends how desperate they are to hit an end of yesr target!

    • Sebastian says:

      I got this email!

    • Charlie says:

I got the SPG invite too, but already have the BA Amex (as a permanent card) and the Gold card.

I applied for the Gold card 4 months ago and have hit the bonus, and was waiting for an MR conversion bonus into Avios. If I cancel the Gold card do you think I can apply for the SPG?

      • M says:

Noooo. Took the card last month 🙁

        • Jay says:

Same raft here, took it out a couple of weeks ago! Just called Brighton to see if they could do anything for me but unfortunately not 🙁

Looks like a Cat 5 stay in my future instead of a 6…

      • Charlie says:

I’ve just remembered the 2 Charge cards and 2 Credit card rule, as BA and Gold are Charge Cards I should be ok getting the SPG!

  • pointsarb says:

O/T The Amex spg card 20k bonus spg points offer is back. Looks like it’s invite only for Amex Gold card holders. Check your inboxes as you have to apply via the link in the email to get the bonus!

  • Lawro says:

Also received the email, but have had the SPG card within the last 6 months.
Any idea if they would enforce the usual 6 month rule for bonus?

  • Heather says:

Trying to apply for the Starwood but it won’t take my 11 digit Starwood account number, seem to recall I had issues last time too. Any ideas?

    • Simmo says:

Very strange! – Went to apply also.

”Ensure that British Airways Executive number contaisn only digits (0-9)”

I think somebody made a mistake! – Will wait a few days for it to be corrected.

  • pointsarb says:

@Heather. Tick the box that says don’t have an spg number then call Amex with the details once you’ve got your card. I just had same issue!

  • Simmo says:

    Cheers!

  • AndyGWP says:

that was ridiculously easy!… thank you! 🙂

  • Clive says:

Must be Friday !! On the Accor link, Thank you, I am not able to click on anything to earn the points….what am I missing?

    • Clive says:

OK worked it out after coffee

    • Rob says:

Try an iPad. Totally screwed up (for me at least) on a PC in Chrome or IE.

      • Bob says:

Pocketted 1100 points too with a wrong answer as well!
It seems it does not matter and 1100 points is because I am already Classic within the scheme, maybe?

I had also problems at the beginning to play all the “missions”.
I went to internet explorer but helped for just a few more.

        I am on firefox.
I could not get the quizz questions when connected with my LeClub number..
I tried the right clik on one of the quizz box (but may work everywhere) and selected “examin the element” or something like that.
Suddenly I had the questions and could play.

I hope this helps the ones who cannot see all the “missions”.

Remember the accor system keep records of what you have done already. So when connected again you can complete the boxes not done already an recover the missing points.

And then you should get a similar detailed account as above.
