Long-term Head for Points readers will remember that I did a review of the Corinthia Hotel in London last year after the hotel let me have a tour of its facilities and suites.

It is a genuinely impressive piece of work.  It is probably the most luxurious new hotel to open in London in the last 20 years (although I haven’t been inside the ‘gutted and rebuilt’ Lanesborough yet) and it is well worth popping in if you are passing, if only for a drink.

Whilst the hotel is surprisingly big, the branding is very low key and it is easy to miss.  It is on Northumberland Avenue – if you come out of Embankment tube station and turn right under the bridge, it is in front of you as emerge, opposite the theatre.  The website is here if you want to learn more.

Corinthia has a sale starting today if you are looking to treat someone to a special weekend in London.   If you book before 24th March for stays before the end of the year, you can lock in a discount of 30% on the Best Available Rate.

The deals at their other five-star European hotels are even better although these properties are not at the same level of opulence as London.

For stays at the Corinthia hotels in Malta, Budapest, Lisbon, Prague and St Petersburg, you will save 50% on the Best Available Rate for bookings made during the sale.

The company has also, interestingly, launched special deals for booking direct.  For London, as you can see, you get free wi-fi and priority for upgrades.  Budapest offers early check-in, late check-out, priority for upgrades and some other bits and pieces.  It is all part of the fight that major hotel groups are having to entice customers away from Expedia etc due to the huge commissions those groups demand.

You can’t earn Avios when you stay with Corinthia.  It is a member of Global Hotel Alliance, however, which has its own loyalty programme.  Members of the Lufthansa Miles & More programme can earn 500 miles per GHA stay – that is their only airline partnership.

Subscribers to Business Traveller magazine get free Platinum level membership of the GHA Discovery programme as I outlined in this article.  That said, my gut feeling is that Corinthia would prioritise direct bookers who are due extra benefits under their ‘direct booking bonuses’ scheme over GHA status members who book via the GHA website.

      With these upgrades the best deal is probably to book a basic (superior) room and get an upgrade to the much larger deluxe. If you pay for deluxe and upgrade you get an executive room but without executive lounge access or breakfast, which is fairly useless as the room is exactly the same size.

      The Budapest Corinthia spa is fantastic, as is the Bock restaurant, and I also love Menza which is a great casual eatery 5min walk away.

    Tried the corinthia in Lisbon for sept, but weirdly they won’t let me book unless I book an earlier start date to the stay! Oh well I’ve booked the tivoli Lisbon with a collection room (breakfast at the terrace ) paid the Amex rate (upgrade if available) and have GHA plat status… Will be interesting to see what we end up with!

      Yup – stayed there in November. Not bad but not great by any means. Food good but decor and service sub par. Stay at the Westin across the bay for a much better experience.

    Does anyone know if this is combinable with AMEX Fine Hotels & Resorts benefits such as 4pm checkout and £85 room credit?

      Usually not, because FHR uses negotiated rates which are agreed in advance and do not change during sale periods. For example, we paid £50 more than their website Best Flexible Rate for an FHR booking at a Four Seasons over New Year, albeit the extra cost was offset by the extra benefits.

        Out of interest did you ask Amex Plat Travel Service is they could match the website rate? I’ve had them manage do this sometimes as in general you’re not meant to pay more than best available/flexible rate on the hotel website. Obviously if the hotel rate is non-flexible or called something different then they can’t match.
