New Amex Platinum hotel benefits launched – but a shock exit too

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Back in October, I wrote about the new deal that American Express had done with Hilton HHonors to offer status as part of the American Express Platinum benefits package.

It had been slowly rolling out globally but had not yet reached the UK.

However, a development has occurred.

If you go to the Platinum cardmembers website, you now see links for:

Hilton HHonors – Gold status (gets free breakfast)

Shangri-La Golden Circle – Jade status

Melia Rewards – Gold status

I will do another article next week looking at each of these in detail and explaining what benefits they bring.  They definitely add value to the Platinum package.

But here is a shock ….

The following message appears on the Platinum website if you look closely enough:

Enrolment to receive the American Express benefit of 1-year complimentary Le Club AccorHotels Platinum tier membership will end on 15 April 2016; after which Cardmember requests cannot be accepted, and Cardmembers will not be enrolled or upgraded to Le Club AccorHotels Platinum tier.

Yes, after 15th April you will no longer be eligible for free Accor Platinum status.  Your existing status will continue to be valid until it expires, of course.

I never took great advantage of this, but my wife used it successfully at the Sofitel in Sochi.  Even on my last Novotel stay I received two free drinks, an upgrade and bonus points.

I would rather have Hilton Gold than Accor Platinum, but at the same time I wouldn’t swap Accor Platinum for Melia Gold.  This was, after all, the only top tier status that came with Amex Platinum.

Hilton UK Gold Members as part of their benefit package offer Free Breakfast irrespective of whether or not you are a Amex Platinum Member.

    • grex9101 says:

The last few Hilton stays I’ve booked have all had breakfast included anyway (indeed, “no breakfast” didn’t seem to be an option). Am I right in assuming that this is the only advantage (barring fractionally more hhonors points) over the silver status?
I’m still unconvinced that the platinum amex is worth the £300/year over the gold. As I said yesterday, the offers are getting more miserly and more niche as the years go by. The only real draw are the points. Feeling a touch disillusioned.

    • grex9101 says:

Well, that’s the point, isn’t it having the card gets you gold status without having to “work” for it. I don’t see the point of your post tbh.

      • Enigma368 says:

Hilton Gold gets you a room upgrade too. In the past it often got lounge access but this was never a guaranteed benefit and seems to be becoming rarer. Amex Platinum is £300 more than a Gold and whether this is worth it to you probably rests mostly on what value you place on Priority Pass, as this is more or less, the most valuable benefit. I would not consider Amex Platinum for a second if Priority Pass was not included, having it for me and my partner is easily worth at least half the £450 annual fee.

  • Metatone says:

Have to admit that while Shangri-La does nothing for me, it is probably a good fit for the kind of people Amex targets Platinum at.

  • Crow says:

I’ve benefitted from a glitch with HIlton HHonors that has continued since they were last an Amex partner, where they seemed to think I was a Centurion card member and have been Diamond ever since (I remember others reporting this either on HFP or FT). If the new relationship involves a re-syncing of data that loses me that perk, then the loss of both Diamond and the Accor status would make me question the value of the Platinum fee (as Melia and Shangri-la are of little use).

Incidentally, at properties with lounges I found Accor Platinum as beneficial as HIlton Diamond, and there was always a free drink even on £25 Happy Monday Ibis stays!

  • Sussex bantam says:

Oh no. That’s really very annoying. Accor platinum was my most used benefit. Although I guess I could cancel the card and use the 450 to buy free drinks instead !

  • edd m says:

    Noooooo!

I’m really disappointed by this, the footprint of Accor in Europe is so good that top tier status is super valuable.

To be fair to Hilton they treat elites very well outside of the USA. Gold in the USA is virtually meaningless as it gets thrown around for free.

  • Tim_t says:

Real shame. As a Hilton diamond member the hard way (and about to be lifetime) the Accor platinum was very useful for the odd stay, especially at the LHR Sofitel. Treatment has always been good. This is a loss for me against the membership fee.

  • CV3V says:

    1. Loss of Accor is a shame, the status benefits were consistently applied and made them my preferred choice.
    2. Hilton free breakfast, through Diamond status match, has been a valuable perk and changed how i cost and book hotel rooms. So Gold status is worthwhile. Even as IHG Spire they are low down my list unless there is a points offer on.
    3. Can anyone get the Amex Plat registration page for these new benefits to work?! Tried on 2 different browsers.

  • ringingup says:

My platinum status expires at the end of March. Will I be able to renew for another year in April?

    • Rob says:

      Yes, you should be OK.

      • AA says:

If one becomes a suplimentory card holder, does one still gain the Hilton gold and other perks as well as the priority pass?

      • ringingup says:

Well, hopefully there will be no mess-up with my account as it happened last year at renewal. Do you suggest waiting until 31/03, when my status expires, and see what happens, or try to re-enrol before that date?
