News in brief:

Dubai announced Concourse D opening date

Dubai International Airport has announced the opening date for the – long delayed – Concourse D.  It will open on 24th February.

This is important because British Airways will operate out of this terminal.  There will be a brand new lounge complex which will include the second ‘Concorde Bar’ for First Class passengers.  This follows the fairly underwhelming launch of the concept in Singapore last year.

Gulf News reports that Lufthansa is opening its lounge complex on 3rd March.  There is no word yet from BA but it is possible that it will not be ready on Day 1.  Hopefully it will be available when I pass through over Easter.

easyJet Plus card jumps 20% to £170

easyJet has recently increased the cost of its easyJet Plus card from £140 to £170.  This may or may not be linked to an influx of new members since British Airways cut its short-haul leg room and tightened up on hand baggage.

easyJet Plus gives you many of the benefits which require status with BA:

  • free allocated seating at the time of booking (saving up to £15.99 per sector)
  • dedicated check-in desks
  • fast track security at 37 airports
  • priority boarding
  • one extra piece of cabin baggage

Arguably, for anyone taking just one easyJet flight a month on average, it remains decent value for money – especially if you combine it with a Priority Pass for lounge access.

I recall Head for Points published an article on 22nd February 2015 showing that American Express was running a special offer on easyJet Plus membership, giving 25% off the then prevailing £149 annual membership fee. I availed myself of that offer, so I was wondering whether anyone has come across a similar offer this year, not least as I have to decide by the end of this month (February 2016) whether to renew my existing easyJet Plus membership at the new elevated price of £170. Thank you for considering my request.

OT: Has anyone else got the invite to the Business Traveler Magazine lunch next month in London? Just wondering who’s been before or who is going?

  • Tom says:

Will easyJet ever invest in a lounge for business (It might sound crazy but they are going after that business market more and more) or do you think they will rely on the ever improving Plaza Lounges ect?

    • Rob says:

The issue, I think, is that if you open a couple then people expect a full network which will never happen.

      • Tom says:

Possibly but they could partner with the lounge companies where they are short…Anyway this is sort of the reason I didn’t sign up to easyjet plus – they didn’t offer fast track security in Manchester… not sure if they do now

        • Pol says:

They do now. My husband flies MAN-AMS and back every week and always uses the fast track lane. With 2 flights a week easy jet plus makes sense for us. Just wish you could earn avois or virgin miles with them

          • Simon says:

You can’t earn Avios but you can get Nectar points so that’s at least worth something

          • Pol says:

Yeah, I do make sure I book through the nectar portal, amassing quite a collection now. I live in hope that one day they may partner with Avios or Virgin and I may be able to do something useful with them!

      • Aeronaut says:

Fair point. I do wonder if they might have something up their sleeve for when they move all their flights to LGW North terminal, but as you say a one-off lounge would fuel expectations (and of course increase costs). Instead perhaps they’ll offer connected flights via LGW North. Or not.

        • Matt says:

Network of lounges 50 miles from the destination city. Good idea.

They might do better with a B&B?

  • Mark says:

I’m flying BA out of DXB on 28 Feb so will report back if there are any new developments.

  • AndyS says:

Can you renew EJ+ early at the current rate? (Without losing any months)

    • Gordon says:

I had the had for a few years. I never renewed automatically and usually let lapse for a short while. Each year I got a promotional email offering a discount of at least 10% to renew

      • Gordon says:

        Card

      • zsalya says:

The only complaint I have ever had with easyjet was when I asked not to renew the card automatically and they did so. That is the only time I have had to talk to their call centre, which is clearly not in the UK – Grrrr.

  • James says:

It seems the BA lounge in concourse D did open on first day. BA 105 was first flight to use the concourse.http://www.businesstraveller.com/news/british-airways-unveils-new-lounges-at-dubai
