News in brief:

British Airways launches new routes to Germany

British Airways made a rather complex announcement on Friday about new flights into Germany.

The first announcement is that BA is ‘launching’ flights from London City to Hamburg.  Whilst technically true, BA already runs a service from City to Hamburg – except that it is a franchised flight operated by Scandinavian carrier SUN-AIR.

BA is taking over the route from its franchisee.  The service pattern will not change but the aircraft will be replaced with a larger Saab 2000.

The second announcement IS new.  There will be flights from London City to Berlin.  There will be up to three flights per day.

Finally, a bizarre one.  There will be one flight a week from London Stansted to Berlin (Sunday lunchtime) and one flight a week from Berlin to London Stansted (Friday night).  This is a positioning flight to get an aircraft to Stansted to operate the new ‘once a week’ holiday route flights BA is starting this Summer.

20% off Amba hotels in London (and a free cake at ‘every hotels’)

You might remember our recent review of the Amba Marble Arch hotel in London which is a genuinely transformational refurbishment of the old Thistle Marble Arch.

Via this link, Amba is currently offering a 20% discount on stays until 8th May.  This is valid at both the Marble Arch and Charing Cross hotels.

There is also a special deal available on the ‘every’ hotel at Piccadilly Circus which is another transformed Thistle.  Details of that can be found here.

You will receive £20 off Best Available Rate, free breakfast, a free upgrade (subject to availability on arrival), a free bottle of prosecco in your room and (to celebrate the 1 year anniversary of the hotel) a free birthday cake in your room.

OT: how quickly does a BA 241 voucher post? Is it as soon as you hit the min spend, or is it at the end of the month after you have paid the balance?

  • Brian says:

The every hotel Piccadilly was on Amex offers some time ago – the offer is valid till the end of March, I believe.

  • Anthony S says:

Raffles – you have made my day! At last, flights from City to Berlin; cutting maybe an hour of my regular trip to Heathrow from south-east London. I could dance with joy!

  • Alex W says:

OT. I got stung by BA yesterday. I bought a one way LHR-BCN for the wife on BA.com for £105. Stupidly, only then did I check price elsewhere and exactly the same flight was £75 on vueling.com. Can I complain to BA? shame it’s non refundable.

    • ee says:

Isn’t there a 24/h cooling off period with BA bookings?

    • Stuart F says:

If it was yesterday, just cancel it for a full refund:
“If you made your booking with British Airways and you notice a mistake after you have paid for your ticket(s), you can cancel your flight booking and claim a full refund without penalty, up to 24 hours from when you made the original booking. Refunds under these circumstances can only be requested by calling our contact centres.”

Brilliant, thanks guys. Cancelled and rebooked with vueling directly. Very disappointing that BA is g charging 40% more for exactly the same flight!

      • ABC says:

        Probably different farecode.

      • Brian says:

It’s exactly the same with Lufthansa and Eurowings – if you price up a flight on the Lufthansa site, you’ll get a much more expensive quote for Eurowings flights than if you go to the EW website. Good to know that going to Vueling direct is also cheaper.

  • Will says:

So the Hamburg routes is actually going to be operated by Eastern Airways via a wet lease. Much like the IOM route is at the moment.

  • Aeronaut says:

    The Hoff!

  • Joolz says:

OT but does anyone who has a Lloyds Avios amex know how long after the statement they normally post you Avios?

    • Alan says:

I find they’re pretty quick, often have already hit the account by the time I’ve checked my statement. You normally get a notification email when they’ve been transferred across.
