If you are working towards your IHG Accelerate target – and this is probably the most generous hotel promotion you will see this quarteryou have only three weeks left to complete all of your tasks.

As the cheaper Advance Purchase rates tend to disappear about a week before the stay date, you should be planning any final stays now, especially if you are going to end up doing a ‘mattress run’ and booking a room where you don’t stay, only check in.

You can check your progress towards your targets here.

How did we do?

My wife has successfully completed 4 of her 5 tasks and earned 43,200 points.

She could still earn an extra 10,000 points by doing another three nights before the end of April but that is highly unlikely.

The two stays were both ‘necessary’ and so the points were genuinely free.

I am in a trickier position.

I have currently earned 12,600 of a possible 58,200 points.

However, I should have earned another 35,600.  IHG is not accepting that a particular stay was booked via the IHG app, which is a condition I need to trigger to receive the remaining points.  I cannot prove it either way – the confirmation email I got from IHG does not show how I booked.

The issue now is whether I should do a mattress run – as I don’t need a hotel room before the end of the month – to guarantee unlocking the 35,600 points.  As they are worth around £150 it makes economic sense to spend £50 on a room, except for the fact that I believe IHG owes me the points anyway.

Here are some tips to help you hit specific targets:.

IHG has launched a targetted bonus for buying IHG Rewards Club points

Until 15th April, IHG Rewards Club is offering a bonus of up to 75% if you buy points.

Both my wife and I have an Accelerate target which is ‘buy some IHG points’.  If you got that too, now is your best chance to do it as you will receive a 30% bonus on a 1,000 point purchase.

To see if you are targetted for a bonus, visit the IHG ‘buy points’ page here.  You will initially see the normal pricing but the special offer will appear once you are logged in, if you qualify.

‘Earn When You Redeem’ – option 1

Many people have a challenge which involves making a points redemption.

This triggers on making the booking and NOT on completing the stay, it seems.  If you have this challenge, make a hotel booking for a few months down the line – beyond the 30th April promo closing date for safety.  You can always cancel later.

‘Earn When You Redeem’ – option 2

Alternatively, there are some digital downloads available in the IHG rewards catalogue.  The  Language Translator Software is FREE.

A reader downloaded this and it triggered the ‘earn when you redeem’ bonus, albeit it took a month to show up on his Accelerate home page.  Easy!

Warnings when doing a booking for someone else via the app

If you need to make a booking via the IHG app to hit your target, but someone else will be checking in who is not the named person on the account, BE CAREFUL.

You cannot add a ‘second guest’ name via an app booking.  You need to book via the app and then amend the booking via ihg.com to add the 2nd name.

However, this is what happened when I did this on my wifes account:

My name replaced my wifes name as the first guest (this disqualifies her from getting points)

Bizarrely, my wifes name became the ‘company name’ attached to the booking

Her IHG Rewards Club number was wiped from the booking

Luckily, I spotted this at check-out at the hotel.  The property was happy to put her name back as lead guest and add back her IHG number.  The stay tracked OK as an app booking even though it had been modified online.

This is not an issue for desktop bookings because you can add the 2nd guests name (ie the name of the person checking in) during the booking process.  It is only an issue with app bookings.

I’d recommend taking a couple of minutes to visit this page, see how far down the line you are to hitting your targets and then deciding if it makes sense to pursue them or not.

  • HayMow says:

Incidentally, has anyone else seen their Achievement Bonus figure change since this quarter’s launch? Mine was originally 28,300 bonus points for 5 out of 6 completed offers (in the mid Dec email inviting me to pre-register), and is now showing as 30,900. Not complaining obviously, just interested!

    • ThinkSquare says:

Yes, there were quite a few posts about this on FlyerTalk. I *think* mine changed, but not 100% sure

    • Liz says:

Yes mine went up from 84k to 97k – I completed all my tasks a couple of weeks ago and all my points have posted. I booked 3 times using the app to be on the safe side – I only needed 2 bookings. Only needed to book 1 extra night in January and change existing bookings for an already planned trip so this was easy for me this time.

  • Simon Fisher says:

Mine was basically stay 15 nights, which was never going to happen, so I only hit the first target (Stay one night for an extra 1000 points). A bit of a damp squib really.

I have three nights booked for May, but they will be outside the period (unless the 99 days is in fact correct).

  • Wayne says:

Had exactly the same issue with the app bookings as PJK and HayMow. I made one which was a points and cash booking ( the terms do not specifically say anything about points and cash bookings as far as I can see) only to be told now that they won’t count. I actually called the useless customer service centre before making the booking and was told it would count. Also getting nowhere with them so far, although I am not letting this one go

    • Gavin says:

Odd – My 2 app bookings (one with a bonus point booking) credited fine using an iPhones

    • Andrew says:

The terms are very clear that only a ‘qualifying stay’ counts towards a target unless it’s a specific reward-based target. What’s not clear is exactly what counts as a ‘qualifying stay’. After a lot of searching I eventually found that a qualifying stay is basically a booking which would normally earn you IHG points ie not rewards or points and cash bookings

    • PJK says:

Thanks Wayne, glad to hear you’re pursuing it too.

Be sure to post here if you get anywhere with them.

  • Alan says:

I’ve happily met zero targets! The offer was atrocious in my case so I’ve instead happily taken double points from HHonors instead. Their customer service is also much better, especially if any points posting issues like the ones you describe, Rob. I’m also hopeful that after not taking up any of the IHG offers for three quarters in a row their IT system might finally allocate me some more sensible offers that are actually achievable!

    • Leo says:

+1. Add to this the Hilton Diamond status match and IHG have not been booked much by me this year.

    • The_Real_A says:

      I had:

      1) Stay once 1000 points
      2) Double points (max 30,000)

      Thats it.

      • xcalx says:

Same for me and mrs xcalx = no stays booked with IHG
Hilton Diamond status match = 6 nights booked.

        • John says:

My offers were achievable but valued Hilton diamond benefits more. I wonder how much business Hilton gained from status match and others lost by people switching stays. 9 nights booked at Hilton instead of IHG.

          • CV3V says:

Ditto. Although i completed Accelerate promo my preference is now to book with Hilton, its a much better experience in terms of status recognition (I am IHG Spire, which is almost meaningless based on experiences).

  • Dan says:

I’m actually kind of shocked but my easter stays tracked ok last night to give me all 57.6k points. A pleasant surprise given the above comments and that I had the dreaded app booking task.

    5k 1 January stay
    6k stay once
    10k stay 5 nights
    2.6k 2 app bookings
4k weekend stay (including a Saturday)
    12.8k stay in 2 countries
2k book a bonus points package (cost me £4 extra in Madrid at easter. Bonus made it 0.13p/point 🙂
1k buy some bonus points (good with the 100% bonus 🙂
    14.2k achievement bonus
Now I’ve completed accelerates I’m dreading my targets on the next one though :s

Now, if only IC NYC Berkely would open up some points rooms!

  • Craig Vassie says:

I’m in the same position as Rob with two missing Accelerate credits for stays booked using the App on an iPad. Ambassador support as always in useless mode!

    • Leo says:

Surely they only deal with IC issues not IHG as a whole? Happy to be corrected on this point – an avenue I’ve never explored. Still no sign of any Ambassador packs I presume….

      • Simmo says:

I ordered Ambassador 3 weeks ago using points, I had the email confirmation – However my account was never updated to Ambassador Spire Elite, nor have the points been taken.

        Anybody else had this experience?

Not waiting to chase at the moment, as the IC stay has come and gone already……

        • Leo says:

I applied initially on 23rd December – had an acknowledgement email that day and then I couldn’t log in to the AMB section – my status didn’t change online. Contacted them and then received a further acknowledgement email a week later (looked exactly the same) which this time seemed to have “worked”. That is the date they seem to be using for my AMB status. I’ve then had mixed success via phone calls to the customer services centre and emails. It’s been a dog’s breakfast to be honest but I did get great value out of my AMB night used for a suite at the Bangkok IC. Well worth the use of 27K points.

          • Danksy says:

How did you book this for 27k and use your amb voucher? Any tips ?

        • Pid says:

Applied for ambassador in Jan and still have not recieved my welcome pack. Fortunately I managed to get them to agree to honour the ambassador stay last month with out he certificate. Aprrently I is going to be sent direct to the hotel, we will wait and see…

  • AndyS says:

Buying reward points – it’s too early for my brain, has anybody calculated what % bonus makes it cheaper than the “cash and cancel” trick. I have “up to 60% bonus” which is 20% on 1k – 19k, 30% 20k-29, 40% 30-39, 50% 40-59k and 60% on the top whack 60k (96000 points for $690 (about £490))

    • Kim says:

Hi Andy, I have the same offer as you and also wondering which is the best deal however I have just seen this offer on the IHG home page….IHG® Rewards Club 100,000 Points for $565…which seems to be open to everyone?

      • AndyS says:

Well that seems better value, if its worth buying that many points!

        • Kim says:

It is obviously going to depend on where we would use the points. I’m looking at the Pallazzo in Vegas for August but it’s midweek and costs $209 plus 12%tax a night or 60,000 points so it wouldn’t pay for me to buy points however I am also staying 2nights at the Intercontinental in Monteray Bay (using my 2 free night vouchers) but that would have cost a hefty $649 plus tax a night…also 60,000 points so I would have then been very tempted to buy the points.

      • Leo says:

But that just works out at 4p per mile doesn’t it? Which you can achieve by the points/cash trick.

        • AndyS says:

Having looked back it’s $70 for 10k with the points+cash system, so 100k would cost $700, and here they’re going for $595 so that is better value. However the 60% extra is about this same as this or slightly worse! (96k for $690). So I guess if someone has 75% extra its slightly better value. But for the odd 20 or 30 k its much better to “cash and points and cancel” . !

  • ThinkSquare says:

Thanks for the reminder, Rob. My “Stay with IHG App” credited ok, but I’ve just noticed a regular stay that I needed for “stay 6 nights” hasn’t posted.

Accelerate 2016 seems to be extended to July now, anyway.

    • AndyS says:

Regarding extended to July, this is rather annoying as I have some stays booked in May, but had to make a couple of unnecessary stays to get done before end of April.

      • AndyS says:

Update! I too was seeing 99 days this morning, but it’s now back to 23, which does mean end of April again !!
