Fly Qatar Airways business class to Auckland for £1,125

Qatar Airways has launched a limited batch of Avios and BA tier point earning sale fares.  These are only available until Monday but you can book for any date in the next 12 months.

This is not a wholesale mega sale as we saw in January.  The prices are certainly good but you need to look carefully for the real bargains.

The good news is that you are now 100% certain to receive British Airways tier points and Avios on discounted Qatar business class tickets.

Qatar Airways A350 Doha

There is bad news for people who missed out on the April Qatar sale because they took BA at their word when they said that Qatar business class sale tickets booked before 1st May but flown later would not earn Avios.  Reports on Flyertalk are that these tickets ARE crediting perfectly happily to BA Executive Club.

The best deal I can find is to Auckland.

Qatar confirmed today (Monday) that Auckland is delayed until 1 February 2017.  You cannot now book tickets for travel before that date at this price.  If you booked over the weekend, I would imagine Qatar will re-route on the A380 via Sydney which is not a huge hardship.

If booking this deal, make sure you book directly on the Qatar website.  This leaves Qatar fully responsible for getting you to Auckland in case the start of services is delayed again – most likely by putting you onto a Sydney flight and buying you a connection.  Booking via Expedia or another agent adds a level of doubt about who would be responsible.

You should also note that Doha to Auckland is currently 17 hours on a Boeing 777 which has Qatar’s older style 2 x 2 x 2 seating.  This is great for a couple but less good if travelling alone.  My review of this seat can be found here.  It will hopefully be switched to an A350 if Airbus can fix the problems which are delaying their deliveries to Qatar.

Warnings out of the way, here are the best prices I have seen advertised.

Whilst not mentioned on their Italy deals page, Qatar is offering Pisa to Auckland for €1,423 (£1,125).  I had no problem finding this price for January 2017 but, of course, you cannot now book for departures before 1st February.  The flight from Pisa to Doha is on a short haul A320 but it does apparently have ‘proper’ business class seating.  From Rome you will pay a lot more – €2,000.

Qatar A380

Another option, and a more convenient one, is from Berlin.  Berlin to Auckland is €1,649 (£1,300) return.  A list of other Qatar sale deals out of Germany is here.

Oddly, you can mix and match these two fares to get an even better price!  Using the multi-city option on the Qatar website lets you book Berlin – Auckland / Auckland – Pisa for just €1,393 (£1,100).

What sale deals are available from the UK?

The list of sale deals from the UK is here.

From Birmingham, which is the only city listed, there is a lot around the £1,600 mark including Hong Kong and Johannesburg.  It is worth trying prices from Manchester, Edinburgh and London as well.

Apart from Auckland, there is nothing in this sale which is a ‘must book’.  It is worth remembering that these fares are good for the next 12 months, however, so you may want to lock in something for Christmas or Easter 2017.

  • question says:

Does the payment cardholder need to travel too? Just tried to book the parents on a trip to AKL, but the t&c’s say something along the lines of them needing to be able to present the card with which payment was made at check-in. Couldn’t find an option to book for someone else though. What’s your take on this?

    • harry says:

I’ve never known that enforced. After all, people change credit cards all the time.

      • Thunderbirds says:

I’ve seen this enforced on a flight i booked for my mother to fly to Sydney. I booked it for her with my BA Amex but BA insisted that the fee was reimbursed to my card and added to her BA Amex. Even though this was a supplementary card to mine.

        • question says:

Mh maybe paying via paypal (even if Rob has advised against it) would bypass that?

    • Yuff says:

We had our credit card checked on a Qatar flight to MLE last month. It took 20 mins to sort it out. Fortunately it was the Lloyds Amex so had it with me for fx spend anyway. They said it was a random security check – but they did the same to the gentleman in front of us as well.

      • Fenny says:

Wow! I have 2 wallets, one for home, one for overseas travel, with different cards in. It would be highly likely that I could book on one card and take another on holiday. I have 4 credit cards in my home wallet, but usually only ever take 2 abroad.

    • mark says:

had it enforced on my and my partner – easy way around to get it – scan of your card and a simple note… It only gets enforced at some airports though…

  • PC the 3rd says:

Can’t seem to find the deals from Germany to Auckland early October – advertised at €1659, but over €5k when trying to book. Are all the good seats gone?

  • Maori in London says:

Amazing!- just booked Pisa>Auckland then Auckland>Munich
Business for 2 plus infant for around 2.2k over xmas! Unheard of. Thanks Raffles.
Anybody know if I get a BA flight from Munich, will/can Qatar transfer my baggage?

    • harry says:

Doubt it always goes smoothly. Can be done but the question is: should you rely on it? I’m pretty sure we did this on partner airlines in the past.

Maori, where are you from? We had a house in Dunedin, nice part of NZ, yellow eyed penguins 🙂

I found the first sea lion pup to be born on the Otago peninsula in many years & got it on national TV lol

      • Maori in London says:

My parents are from Opotiki… which is a long way from London 🙂 I spent most of my adult life in Auckland thou…

    • Rob says:

In theory Qatar should tag through to a oneworld partner on a separate ticket, yes.

      • Maori in London says:

Thanks Raffles, Ill give it a go. I’m guessing I cant bypass the luggage allowance for my connecting flight .. eg flying Buisness Qatar but would only be Econ on BA back to London.

        • Rob says:

You would if it was on the same ticket …. in theory, though, if Qatar checks it through then how could BA charge you for excess?

        • Lady London says:

QR checked mine through from SYD to LON. I was ticketed on QR only as far as MUC then a BA flight (not on same ticket) that I produced to them, that connected me to London. The SYD checkin agent checked with her supervisor, and they checked all my luggage through to London using the QR limits.

On luggage you’ve got to be very aware that many airlines have only contract staff at airlines aorund the world, that may not be aware of all the concessions like this between airlines even when they’re official. Sometimes even their management is not, or the contract staff will incorrectly and their management or whoever they call may still insist on applying some local policy or policy from the airline they check in for most, instead of the correct policy such as Oneworld airlines checking through luggage in for each other. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve come across this. Some of the time if you’re lucky you can persuade or beseech (they don’t like to be ‘informed’ I’ve found), sometimes you hit a brick wall and end up paying lotsamoney.

My grandparents are from Opotiki btw, although not maori if your name corresponds! I love the place.

      • JamesWag says:

I did a BA to Cairo then Cairo to BKK on seperate tickets last year and hadn’t even considered it’d be tagged all the way by BA so was very surprised when they did so at the bag drop. Impressed.

    • Phillip says:

I’ve never had an issue with through checking on separate tickets, as long as all airlines are full OW partners, as this is technically a OW policy. I’ve done it a few times on a BA/AB connection LHR/TXL/AUH. At times I’ve had to educate check in staff that AB is a OW partner and had to call upon a supervisor once, but always had it done eventually. I have a written confirmation from BA that they would through check on a OW partner, which I received after e-mailing customer services. Ultimately, it is down to the staff and their knowledge. But they can be persuaded to listen and look up the rules.

      • Lady London says:

LAN, a OneWorld member, completely st*ffed me in AKL on this. They refused to check luggage through and refused to give me lounge access when I had full connections on OW all the way from AKL to SYD and in J same day from SYD eventually to London. Cost me lotsamoney. I got them to sign something confirming the decisions they had made saying I would take it up with OneWorld. This was finally after much mistreatment as after I dared to politely and tentatively ask, their local borrowed Air New Zealand contract checkin staff then decided they would infiniteismally weigh and size every piece of my luggage including my handbag. I had to repack everything. This took over 1 hour when I had checked in at 5am. I still made the flight, and was in tears at this treatment and my family member that I had to leave being ill.

I’ve shelved my idea of flying with LAN in the future and considered never flying out of AKL again in case I meet Air New Zealand contract staff failing to give the official OneWorld luggage check-through and then ‘punishing’ the passenger who dared to ask politely if the policy could apply. Although I have to say the aircraft staff were great when they saw me in tears and fantastically well run plane in terms of service.

  • Max says:

Also booked for March/April next year. PSA-AKL-MUN. 2+2 for just <£4K. Splendid!

  • Morgan says:

Decided to go from AMS and return to LHR for £1550. Plus I chose to have an 18 hour stopover in Doha so I can have an overnight and day in the city. Have only ever transited in the airports in the Middle East before so looking forward to some Easter warmth and a taster of Arabian life. What’s s reasonable ‘beach’ hotel to stay at?

Deal from Pisa is superb but not 100% comfortable with small number of flights there from LHR. More options if I go LCC from other airport but I don’t want the hassle.

    • Rob says:

The St Regis was chaotic when I was there, see my review. A new W just opened next door if you are a ‘W’ person. I think there is an InterCon down in the same area as well. All have beaches even though they are in the city.

      • TGLoyalty says:

St Regis and Intercon next door to each other at the beach but pretty sure the only W is in West Bay, no beach.

        Sheraton near the Corniche

There’s Kempinski on the pearl which is very nice

        • Rob says:

W just opened I think on the plot directly next to St Regis?

    • Craig says:

We did this on the way back from Bangkok last week, but note that QR refused to short check our bags to Doha, despite the overnight stop, so we had to repack and check the larger suitcase with toothpaste/suncream etc through to Stockholm. We were offered the option of collecting the bags in DOH for only GBP 200…

We stayed at the W. No beach. In fact not much walkable, except a mall.

  • question says:

How are you paying for this in pounds sterling? Only have the free BA Amex and wouldn’t want to spend 3% in FX fees (will be buying 4-5 tickets)… Hoping to travel next April, but expedia.co.uk and the other OTAs that would charge me in pounds sterling don’t allow me to book flights for mid-April yet… Is mid-April 2017 only bookable on Qatar’s website, which would then charge me in euros?! Is there a way of paying in pounds sterling on Qatar’s website?

  • Kerry says:

One again, a great ‘heads up’ – yesterday my brother and I booked PSA/AKL/PSA in December – a little over £1,000 round trip less £250 each in EMDs issued to us by Qatar due to problems we had earlier this year with flight cancellation hassle. Always wanted to do NZ and this is an amazing fare!! Thanks Raffles!

  • Michael says:

Regarding likely Auckland cancellation; I actually want to fly to Australia (Melbourne or Sydney) at Christmas. I would be happy enough at this price if the plane did go to Auckland, spend a day or two and then fly to Australia. However, cancellation and the plane arriving in Australia would be more ideal for me.

As such, if they did cancel and route the flight to Australia, would it be likely that the re-booked segment to Auckland (say on Qantas or Virgin or Air NZ) would be a new flight booking (i.e. different PNR) and therefore you wouldn’t lose the return Qatar flight legs if you decided to no-show the Auckland flight?

Just thinking it could be a very cheap way of flying to Australia for Christmas, especially if the Auckland leg could be avoided (again, I’d be happy to take the risk that I end up in NZ and have to fly back).
