IHG launches ‘double miles’ as alternative to Accelerate – but not for Avios or Virgin

UPDATE – APRIL 2024:  This article is now out of date, but don’t worry.  We produce a monthly summary of the top hotel bonus point offers – please click HERE or use the ‘Hotel Offers’ menu above.

Click here for our article on IHG’s ‘2000 Bonus Points’ promotion which runs from 1st April to 31st May 2024. You can register for the offer by clicking here.

Keep up to date with new hotel offers by signing up for our free daily or weekly newsletters.

For most people, the current Accelerate promotion from IHG Rewards Club is likely to be the most generous hotel offer this Summer.  My own personal target would get me 48,600 IHG Rewards Club points for staying just five nights if I select the right brands and nights.

You can check your own Accelerate target by signing in here.

For some people, though, Accelerate might not work out.  Perhaps you will only have one or two IHG (Holiday Inn, HI Express, Crowne Plaza, InterContinental etc) stays during the period, which is unlikely to be enough to trigger a big Accelerate bonus.  You may also have got a particularly poor bonus which is simply not worth the effort.

If so, IHG has an alternative promotion for you.

Double Up‘ will earn you double airline miles on every stay you make between now and the end of August.

In order to get this offer, you need to register at this page and change your IHG Rewards Club profile to earn ‘miles’ instead of ‘points’.

For some odd reason, neither Avios or Virgin Flying Club are included in this offer.  You can see the participating airlines on the registration page.  Those of most interest to UK readers will be:

  • Etihad
  • American Airlines
  • Delta
  • United
  • Singapore Airlines
  • Cathay Pacific / Asia Miles

…. plus another 21 airlines

Most people will be better off with the main Accelerate promotion.  For the rest of you, double miles will be better than nothing on a one-off IHG stay.

You can register for double miles and find out more here.

Surely the double points hfp offer is better thsn double miles?

  • Nadir says:

O/T but I’m hoping someone will have the answer to this…

I’m an IHG Platinum Ambassador and I’ve booked a stay at the IC Hong Kong at the end of September for four nights.

The first night is a paid stay. I booked the Intercontinental Deluxe Harbour View Room and the hotel have upgraded the booking; the reservation now shows I’m going to be in a Deluxe Junior Suite.

The second night was booked with points. And the third and fourth nights were booked with the two free nights I got as part of last year’s Accelerate promotion.

Does anyone know if they’ll expect me to move from the Deluxe Junior Suite to the Superior Room (their standard room) after the first night? I appreciate they’d be well within their rights to do so but wondering what the custom and practice is.

Also, any idea of what I can expect in terms of Ambassador benefits for the reward nights?

I’ve tried having a read of the FlyerTalk thread on the hotel but it’s a very long thread and while I saw someone ask the first question, I didn’t see a response (although I may well have missed it!)

      Hi Nadir
Quick answers to you question. I am afraid it is very unlikely they will let you stay in the Junior Suite for the whole duration. However, they will usually offer the options of paying an upgrade fees to stay in the same room for the duration. You can contact hotel directly to get more information.

As regards to the AMB on rewards nights, you receive whatever it says on the T&C, and depends how busy the hotel is and how many nights one books, one will “usually” get the room facing the pool side( it is actually not listed on the website). There is always exception, but I would say being realistic about it is the best approach.

You should also receive the welcome drink vouchers to the lobby bar, these are given out to IHG members ( I am not sure to what level though).

      • Sean says:

We got the free drink vouchers as basic IHG members at the hotel when we stayed there

    • Nadir says:

Thank you both. Just emailed the hotel. Let’s see what they come back with…

  • Nadir says:

Just an update (in case it’s useful info for someone else).

They’ve upgraded my reward bookings in recognition of my Ambassador status but wanted 1760 HKG per night if I wanted to stay in the Deluxe Junior Suite for the other three nights… That’s way above my budget so I’ll have to make do with the view of the habour only on the first night!

At least they’ve given me a Deluxe room on the reward nights; even if it only has a view of the plaza(!)

    • Rob says:

If they are not busy when you check in they may let you keep the JS.
