Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Bits: new ‘buy Avios’ bonus launched, triple Miles & More with Hilton – Avios to follow?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

News in brief:

Get up to 35% bonus when you buy Avios

If everything went to plan, a new ‘buy Avios’ bonus should now be live over at avios.com.  I’m not sure if ba.com will have it or not on the BAEC ‘buy Avios’ page.  Historically you could get a better deal via the Iberia ‘buy Avios’ page but the fall in the value of the £ makes that less likely.

Between now and 26th September, you will receive:

1,000 – 15,000 Avios = 10% bonus

16,000 – 34,000 Avios = 20% bonus

35,000 – 80,000 Avios = 30% bonus

85,000 – 100,000 Avios = 35% bonus

The page to buy is here.   This is certainly not a bargain – at the top end, you are still paying £1,615 for 135,000 which is a toppy 1.2p each.  If you need to buy a few to get your account up to the right level for a redemption, however, you will find you get a better deal today than you did yesterday.

Hilton HHonors launches triple Miles & More miles – triple Avios to follow?

Hilton HHonors has launched a new promotion with Lufthansa’s Miles & More programme.  This allows you to earn TRIPLE Miles & More miles when you choose ‘points and miles’ and credit the miles element to M&M.

It is valid for stays until 30th November.  You need to register here.

What is great is that this offer should double up with the current ‘Double Up’ offer.  I wrote about ‘Double Up’ here and you can register here.

This would mean you earn double Hilton HHonors points via ‘Double Up’ and triple Lufthansa miles on the same transaction.

It is now likely that a similar triple Avios deal will be launched by Hilton over the next couple of weeks.  This would follow the pattern of recent promotional periods.  I will let you know when it turns up.

Just for information I spent 20 minutes on the online “Chat” on the HHonors website earlier this week because they had posted my third stay under the “Up to Quadruple Avios” promotion to BA, rather than Iberia. I’m set to points & miles, with Iberia as preferred airline partner, and have been since the promotion started. I was credited double & triple points respectively, correctly, to Iberia, for my past two stays, but they then posted the last stay to BA with just double Avios. It took ages just to get the agent to understand the error, which he said he couldn’t now change since the points had already been sent to my BA Executive account. I had to persist and finally he has created a case no. to investigate it further.

    • John says:

Where your miles go (or whether you get points and points) depends on your settings at the time of booking. Had you booked this stay earlier while your profile was still set to BA? What does your receipt from the hotel say as your airline partner number?

    • Alan says:

I’m only guessing here but I’m almost certain you will have made this booking a while back when BA was your preferred partner, then for the more recent stays you’ve made them since changing your airline preference?? Remember the airline partner preference only applies when you *make* the booking, not what you have it set to when you actually stay. The property can chance it on their system though. Points+points vs points-miles settings are different though, you can set them as you wish.

    Nice picture of Stuckey Molino.
We shall be checking in at lunchtime and the app shows an upgrade from deluxe to Executive with view (hopefully across to main Venice).

There is an engine fault on the plane and we have to change to another with two plus hours delay.
Does anyone know the rules for compensation please?

      • Genghis says:

In general, arrive at destination 3 hours late. See BA EC261 thread on FT by CWS

      • harry says:

engine failure is not a ‘get out’ like volcanic ash

        • James67 says:

Everybody and their granny may be aware the problem is an engine fault but by the time they claim compensation they should not be surprized to find that the fault was something extraordinary after all. Once I ended up with an overnight in a hotel at LHR because AY crew arrived at BKK 45 minutes after scheduled departure time and then plane returned from end of runway to the gate because they forgot to have toilet wasre pumped out from the arrival flight. When claiming compensation extraorniray weather was suddenly the problem; they must have invested more money in staff effort in avoiding the claim than the cost of the compensation itself. It was unreal, I eventually admitted defeat to myself and gave up after several months, despite my usually being very effective at such things.

          • harry says:

they also massage times by 15 mins or so, so really you’re looking to be late at arrival gate by at least 3hrs 15 mins for an ‘automatic’ compo approval, otherwise you need to elevate the claim

          • Hugh says:

a good tip for next time – document what is being said with times, and if you have access to social media like Twitter – is start a real time conversation with them quoting what staff are saying – makes claiming much easier. The last time this happened to me, easyjet paid up without any trouble

  • Dale says:

It’s 3 hours, but why not just google it?

  • Mark says:

Will earning Miles & More points via Hilton prevent my old existing M&M points from expiring? Or is it on a ‘date earned plus x years’ basis?

  • James67 says:

Anybody here got much experience of using avios and money? Is BA consistent across routes, cabins and time when it comes to the price/value of avios when used in this way or is it all a bit of a lottery that needs to be evaluated on a flight by flight basis? Is it generally a cheaper option than the usual ways of buying avios which seem to hover around 1p at best in promotions like that today (not counting the exceptionl deals we see from tesco etc from time to time)? I’ve been tempted by avios and money when my avios stash has been low but so far I’ve avoided becuse I believe you lose the avios, money or both if cancelling?

  • Cuchlainn says:

    Pray tell Harry…

  • Doley31 says:

Hi – does anyone now if I buy the max 100k avios in the BA sale, does that mean that I cannot buy any morein the avios sale and transfer them to my BAEC account
