New promo: earn 1,000 Avios in BA and avios.com for collecting with a new partner

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Avios.com and British Airways Executive Club both launched an interesting new promotion yesterday which could get you 1,000 Avios in each scheme.

Full details are here on avios.com.

You will receive 1,000 Avios if, between now and 21st November, you earn Avios from a partner you have not previously earned from since 3rd October 2015.

Each programme has its own exclusions and rules:

avios.com

The obvious rule which might trip you up is ‘Flight partners’.  These are treated as one partner.  If you have credited a BA flight to avios.com in the last year, crediting an Iberia flight will NOT trigger the bonus.

Similarly, Avios e-store shopping is treated as one partner, irrespective of which retailer you used.

The following are excluded: “Purchase, Gift or Transfers of Avios; Survey Partners (E-rewards, Reward for Thoughts, Survey Sampling International); Member Get Member (MGM) referrers; Shell Drivers’ Club; Avios awarded for refer a friend”

If you have a Household Account, the account will only earn the bonus once irrespective of the number of account members who use a new partner.

So, how can you trigger the avios.com bonus?

The easiest options are either a Tesco Clubcard transfer or a TopCashback transfer.  The latter is what I will be doing, I think, with the smallest transfer I can manage – which will be the size of the smallest cashback item waiting to be paid.  I am certain I have not transferred to avios.com in the last year.

Crediting a BA flight is fine – unless you have BA status, in which case you will lose your status bonus which will cost you Avios.

Heathrow Rewards points transfers are also an easy option.

British Airways Executive Club

The same restrictions apply as for avios.com.  In particular, earning from flying counts as one partner so using a different airline is not good enough.

The same merchants are excluded.

Hotel partners are NOT grouped together so if you have transferred from one hotel scheme this year you CAN transfer from another and trigger the bonus.  If you are a top tier Starwood Preferred Guest member, the minimum airline transfer is just 1 point.

Personally, I will either do a Tesco Clubcard transfer (I need to check if I have done one in the last year) or move the minimum 1,000 American Express Membership Rewards points across.  That will do the trick.  Heathrow Rewards is another possibility.  Most people will find TopCashback the easiest although I have already done that this year.

Most of us should be able to earn 1,000 Avios in each scheme easily enough, especially as there are 6 weeks to manage it.

Note that the deadline for awarding you your 1,000 bonus Avios is 31st January, so don’t do this if you need the points to post quickly.

  • Sebastian says:

I have just had a look and it appears to me that when Lloyds transfer my first set of points over from my Avios card which was taken out this month then I should get the bonus. Is this correct?

  • AndyW says:

I don’t see AMEX membership rewards listed as an option, anyone seen this hidden away somewhere? Have not done a transfer for ages.

  • DTLW201 says:

So wait, Im confused – can I earn 2000 points by using 2 methods I haven’t used before to that specific program?

    ie:

1000 points for clubcard points to BA as I haven’t done this before

    and

1000 points for transferring HR to avios as I haven’t done this before (I usually send them to BA avios last time being in 2016)

  • Mark says:

OT: Can you use your BAPP CC to purchase Avios via BAEC and use it to hit a spend target? Assuming it is possible would this qualify for 3 avios per £1 spent?

    • Rob says:

Not sure if it does, because I think purchases are handled by a third party company called points.com and that is the name on the card statement?

      • Mark says:

No worries. As long as I can use my BAPP to purchase avios as a way of hitting my spend target I don’t mind missing out on the extra 1.5 avios per £1.

        • TGLoyalty says:

why not buy gift cards at tesco for bonus clubcard to transfer to avoid and use them at xmas etc rather than buying avois at inflated prices?

  • mark2 says:

I can only get a very short history of my Avios account with BAEC (two pages). Am I missing something please?

    • Tilly71 says:

They updated their shopping portal site a while ago, all shopping history not viewable before thay updated.

    • zsalya says:

Choose date range, when it allows you to go back three years from today.

Then I suggest copy and past to Excel so one can keep indefinitely.

    • Liz says:

I actually received a statement from Avios in the post at the weekend covering the the last 12 months – I didn’t ask for it so it came in handy – -although I keep a list of all my transactions anyway to check that the points post ok

  • JAXBA says:

    Sounds correct to me

  • Callum says:

Does anyone have any idea what 4,500 points for “Sttm Award 06sep2016” that appeared in my avios account (as a credit) on the 30th is?

I don’t recall entering any kind of competition and it can’t be a Tesco bonus.

    • Callum says:

I’ve just worked out its the Sunday Times Travel Magazine! The only acronyms Google would bring up were the Small Town Texas Mason awards and Stop The Thyroid Madness!

  • CJ says:

Does it require any sort of registration on the Avios or BAEC sites?
