British Airways removes Qatar ‘R’ business class from tier point and Avios earning

This week saw the launch of the British Airways / Qatar Airways revenue sharing deal on routes from the UK to Doha which I discussed here.  This means that BA and Qatar are effectively operating as one airline on these routes with the revenue being shared out between them, irrespective of carrier used.

Regular Head for Points readers will know that Qatar Airways regularly has incredibly cheap business class sales from Europe which credit to British Airways Executive Club and make requalification for Executive Club status very easy.  One £900 return ticket to Bangkok would get you over 90% of the way to a BA Silver card.

No longer.

It seems that, as part of the revenue sharing deal, British Airways will now refuse to credit heavily discounted Qatar Airways business class tickets to Executive Club.  You will not receive ANY Avios or tier points at all.

They do NOT appear to be giving any leeway for tickets booked before this week.

Here is the key page of the Executive Club website:

British Airways Qatar Airways tier points

Note that ‘R’ is missing next to ‘Business’.

This is not a mistake, based on various Twitter and call centre conversations reported on Flyertalk.  That said, ‘R’ class flights do still show up in the Avios miles calculator tool.

Oddly, Qatar Airways ‘R’ class DOES still appear as an earning miles and status points in Iberia Plus as at 5am today and, of course, all other oneworld frequent flyer programmes continue to offer credit for ‘R’ class Qatar Airways tickets.

If you have an ‘R’ class Qatar Airways ticket booked, do not panic immediately.  Some clarity on what is happening should emerge over the next couple of days.  If the worst comes to the worst you can credit the flight to a different frequent flyer scheme – possible even Iberia Plus to earn Avios – although that won’t help you earn BA status of course.

The BA website is now showing “R” Class fares count for Qatar! I’ve taken a print-out – just in case things are “enhanced|” again before my March trip!

  • Mervyn says:

BAEC Company Representative Louise has also now added this post in the Flyertalk BA forum:
”Quick update, the correct information is now reflected on ba.com on the air partners page.
    warm regards
    Louise”

See also the updated BA Earnings Table on ba.com. It has also been copied into this post:

Looking at the Table, it seems that the only reason for the Table having changed at all is because the Qatar Economy Class G earning rate is reducing from 50% to 25% with effect from 30 October 2016.

I strongly suspect that what had happened here is that in making that amendment, Class R was accidentally cut out from the Business Class list because it is the fifth class on that line and all the others have a maximum of four. In other words it seems to me that it was simply a formatting issue and caused entirely by mistake.

IT people – you don’t have to love them! And I certainly never have.

Hmnnn…. error or R customer backlash? I wonder if BA were feeling out the waters with this one and it’s an indication of things to come…..

    • Mervyn says:

I doubt that there was nearly enough time for any such a possible ”reversal” Apart from anything else, Qatar would have to have been fully consulted before anything could be changed or further changed. These things are not done at any really rapid speed.

Anyway, it does not matter as all is well that ends well. At least for now.

At no time in this brief few hours long saga was I even remotely concerned that the Avios and Tier Points earning rates applicable and confirmed at the time of booking would not be honoured albeit there might have been a need to press the case with BA (who always have to deal with any missing Avios or BA Tier Points claims). Yes, Qatar arrange the crediting process but it is BA who front and pursue any and all such claims.

Sunday Times Travel Magazine Bonus Avios:-

Bought someone a sub on 27 September. Should I expect to have received the Avios by now? If so, do I claim for missing Avios via BA Exec Club?

    Thanks.

    • RussellH says:

      Thanks Genghis.

Yes, it is the only sub I have bought.

My suspicion is that as it was a gift sub, someone/thing has mixed up purchaser and recipient.

The person receiving the sub obvious does not have my BA Exec Club no.

      I have e-mailed – we shall see!

  • Peter Taysum says:

OT BA has cancelled both flights LHR to BGO CE return I have in June. Their system hasn’t worked out they’ll need to change my LHR to NCL as it won’t connect. I was Gold till end of Oct so was booked in 1A. Now Silver they are saying I can’t have that seat. They’re going to email seat reservations to make a request. I’m travelling with a friend, and we’re not even sat together anymore.

Sadly I’ll regain Gold next July. Kinda wishing I wasn’t going to.

  • danksy says:

My business class flights from OSL to BKK have booked into “I” so presume that will be ok 😀

  • Hank Wakai says:

Slightly off topic, but if flying in/out of MNL and you wish to be met / seen off by your family, do not use any Terminal 1 airline (includes Qatar). Non ticket holders are not permitted in the terminal. Your family is required to wait for you outside without a/c. I would not wish it on my worst enemy. Use Terminal 3 which has a far larger ground side with plenty of eating options – that means CX, EK or SQ among others are far better options. They just spruced up Terminal 1, but it’s still a reminder of the old days in PH. Avoid it like the plague.

  • David Moritz says:

I have just clicked the link Rob references above on ba.com and for Qatar business, ‘R’ is included (
